Hi,

I have been looking at inter web Tv thingys (on demand stuff) and wondered if anyone had any recommendations? Love film (Amazon on demand) and Netflix seem the most popular but Knowhow movies is much cheaper.......

Any pearls of wisdom? Smile

The common theory is that Lovefilm (Amazon as it is now) is better for films, Netflix for TV. If I had to choose, I'd go for Netflix because of Breaking Bad and Orange Is The New Black.

derenstar · 21/02/2015 10:34

Amazon instant video for me, has more of the stuff I like to watch and more 'newer' shows. We do also have Netflix, kids seem to like the kids section.

bluelamp · 21/02/2015 10:35

Blinkbox is good if you don't use it much because you just pay per film rather than by subscription. Tesco also has a service for Tesco clubcard users which has lots of old films for free.

SaucyJack · 21/02/2015 10:38

We've got Netflix. Never tried anything else, but we're happy enough with it for the 1.50 a week it costs.

There's more than enough tweenage crud on there to keep the kids quiet on Saturday mornings, and we can always find a film to watch.

I will say tho that it isn't very easy to navigate. It used to be much better tbh.

KnappShappey · 21/02/2015 10:47

Hmmm, I think that part of my decision making problem is that we have only had 'normal' TV before, no sky or anything so I have not seen any of the series like Breaking Bad that might swing my decision.....

We are planning to use a laptop and wire to connect to the Tv (not an internet TV) if that makes a difference?

Thanks for the advice so far Smile

We've just gone back to Netflix as Amazon was so rubbish - really poor selection of movies and TV series. I'd suggest having a look at the catalogues online to get an idea of what's on each and which would suit your viewing preferences better. FWIW I'm loving being back with Netflix! Grin

BigCatFace · 21/02/2015 10:51

If you're using your laptop, then get Netflix and install the Hola extension for Google chrome. Then you have American Netflix and its infinitely better.

SaucyJack · 21/02/2015 10:52

You can also run Netflix through a playstation if you have one plugged in to your screen/telly. That's what we do- but don't ask me how.

HTK · 21/02/2015 10:54

They both offer free trials for a month so give both a whirl. We have both and probably watch amazon marginally more.

Netflix hands down and then blinkbox for the odd new release you want to rent - netflix doesn't have new releases in films but blinkbox means you only pay for the film you want to rent one at a time (no contract). Netflix has lots of great tv programmes - breaking bad, orange, bates motel, misfits, better call Saul etc etc. Well worth it just for those.

The no TV licence is the route we are on!
We have just been watching the BBC/ITV player etc so far but want to add something to it.
We looked at a nowTV box but I wasn't sure I could run the subscription (i.e. lovefil or netfilx) through it.....

We have Netflix and love it. We have a ChromeCast (approx £20) which plugs into the tv and control it via our phones. Saves having wires draped accross the room. Having hyperemesis and being signed off since October I can safely say that the £5.99 a month has saved my sanity!

Cocolepew · 21/02/2015 11:09

Netfix wins hands down imo.

We have both and regularly watch both. Unsure about paying extra per movie on Amazon, we dont. We just have a flat monthly fee. Just asked DH as he pays. He said that you pay for new releases (we just choose not to and wait for them to come on Sky if we really want to watch it)

I would do as suggested above and get a free trial of each and then decide.

BalconyBill · 21/02/2015 11:23

We have both and at the moment, we are definitely using Amazon much more as the TV shoes on there are much better AT THE MOMENT!

They ebb and flow, but Netflix don't appear to have added anything new that I want to watch for a very long time, whereas Amazon put loads of new stuff on in the new year and also have things like Constantine and Black Sails which update once a week. Have loved Scandal and Bosch as well.

The movies that they charge for on Amazon are fairly new releases or things that they can't get licence free, they simply don't appear on Netflix. If you don't want to pay for them, there is loads of other stuff to watch instead.

KnappShappey · 22/02/2015 12:26

Great, I'm going to sign up for a free trial of each and see which takes my fancy!

Now my next question...... What device should I use if not my laptop, I'm looking at a Roku (thanks moresnow) or a chrome cast (thanks thejiminy) any other suggestions?

We have netflix and I couldn't be without it. In fact we ditched the sky subscription over a year ago and just have netflix now. It's not amazing for movies but there are some great ones on there. It's better for Tv series such as Dexter, house of cards, Orange is the new black and most recently I've got into pretty little liars. Breaking bad if that floats your boat too but it doesn't mine (I appreciate I'm almost alone with this Grin).

I tried lovefilm about three or four years ago and hated it. Hardly any films that I wanted anyway, may have changed since then though... If there's a film I really fancy watching that isn't on Netflix I usually rent it from the Playstation store or buy the DVD if I'm really desperate and it isn't on there which is rare.

ScrambledEggAndToast · 22/02/2015 12:38

Netflix by far, I have had lovefilm and was a bit, meh Hmm

weeblueberry · 22/02/2015 12:38

The thing with Amazon is you end up paying extra per movie which drives me mad, I like a flat monthly fee, no extras. Plus Netflix has great series.

You can browse purely through the Prime stuff though and don't have to pay any extras for other movies. I do quite like the option to buy though if there's nothing I fancy in the inclusive Prime membership library though. Although I'd paid a small fortune in Peppa Pig TV series which I could probably live without Envy

Dieu · 22/02/2015 12:47

We have Netflix and teenage daughter loves it, but I am disappointed by the films, particularly the thriller/horror section. Loads of new teeny films, but no 'classics'. Doesn't even have Single White Female or Silence of the Lambs. And forget about an Alfred Hitchcock!

Boysclothes · 22/02/2015 12:49

Amazon is amazing for 80s kids TV. DS has been binging on trap door and I love a bit of thunder cats!

Dieu · 22/02/2015 12:49

Re-reading the thread, everyone else seems happy, so it could just be me!
