To ask what squash/juice you give your children to drink?

Littleonesgettingbigger · 20/02/2015 16:01

My two daughters aged one and five, drink about 1 litre of diluted squash a day (they do not drink milk or water it anything else). I am happy with them drinking squash as at least they are drinking (which is very important due to constipation problems with youngest). I used to give them watered down fresh apple juice but the dentist mentioned this was too acidic for their teeth to have throughout the day. So I changed to apple high juice (not sugar free), the dentist at this times checkup said this was basically like giving them sugar water to drink and is bad for their teeth and advised me to change to sugar free squash. I am reluctant to do this due to asparatem? What do you all give your children to drink (those of you that use squash/juice)? Thank you in advance

I do wonder if it depends on where you live. Here in West Yorkshire we have lovely tap water but when I go down South it tastes horrible. If you live somewhere with nasty tap water, maybe buying squash is easier than buying bottled water?
Anyway I'm a dentist- I'm obviously going to be anti squash!

RandomNPC · 21/02/2015 09:32

Blue pop, and tea in a bottle.

TeaNotCoffeePlease · 21/02/2015 09:34

Mine are now grown up but have been given tap water from day one. i never buy squash or pop although they have them when out sometimes. They all have fabulous teeth with no fillings.

RandomNPC · 21/02/2015 09:36

I haven't RTFT all the way through, surely someone has mentioned Fruit Shoots? I'd be disappointed if not.

ThatBloodyWoman · 21/02/2015 09:42

Mine have water, but sometimes when we have a gaggle of other kids round I get no added sugar summer fruits or blackcurrant squash, and we finish it off,and sometimes I get it if we have colds so we can drink it hot. But,I agree with a pp -artificial sweeteners are to be avoided.
I remember the disbelieving looks I got when I had several kids round and they asked what I had to drink and I said 'errrr....water....'!
Juices are extremely rare here because of tooth enamel problems.
Fizzy is not a drink for children imo.
My 9 year old likes a nettle tea every so often.
Mine have milk every so often.
My 9 year old likes skimmed and swears she can tell the difference between the organic milk we normally get,and non organic bought if we run out.Hmmmmmm.Not so sure about that!

Lexie1970 · 21/02/2015 09:42

I'm sure it is only in mumsnet world that children drink milk and water - in the real world kids drink squash and even heaven forbid fruit shoots!!!

Surely the key here is fluid intake and if that fluid is squash then do be it.... We personally have robinsons sugar free and I dilute it more than the manufacturer states. I am lucky DS will drink milk and water but prefers squash

This place is beyond parody sometimes.

RandomNPC · 21/02/2015 09:44

Oh arse, bold fail.

SummerHouse · 21/02/2015 09:49

Mine have smoothies, squash (very diluted but never sugar free), water, fruit juice and even a bit of fizzy pop if we are having fish and chips. On the other hand I am very tight on sweets. You have to make your own rules. Mine are 2 and 5.

ThatBloodyWoman · 21/02/2015 09:50

But thats why I wrote it Random - because its true, and like it or not, some of us do have children like that.
When my dd1 used to go to parties where there was two types of squash on offer, she asked for water -even though she knows I wouldn't mind her having the squash, and all her friends were drinking it.
I've had a slapping on a thread like this before. My dd has tooth enamel problems.I was virtually accused by her (ex) dentist of having her attached to a coke drip all day.Turns out it happened in the womb.
I'm not ashamed of the choices we make.

SummerHouse · 21/02/2015 09:52

Oh yes and 2 yr old loves a mint tea. Wink

ThatBloodyWoman · 21/02/2015 09:52

And I did answer the question about what squash we get, when we do,so claim my rightful place to make comment.

mrssmith79 · 21/02/2015 09:56

Oh man, I don't generally bite but no one, especially the OP gives a tiny flying fuck if your little darling, with their award winning teeth akin to pure pegs of gleaming diamond, drinks only tap water filtered through the still twitching eyelids of baby pandas . Honestly, it has no bearing whatsoever on the question asked and, frankly, makes you look like a smug, sanctimonious, competitive twat.

And breathe Hmm

threepiecesuite · 21/02/2015 09:58

Robinsons sugar free here. It's the nicest tasting squash. Water at school.

I thought I was doing well to get DD to age 5 without ever having a fizzy drink Smile

ohtheholidays · 21/02/2015 10:01

Mine have squash.

We don't have fizzy drinks. They all have a glass of orange juice or apple juice with they're breakfast. We buy Vimto squash and Ribena,we were told by the specialists at the hospital not to buy sugar free squash, our youngest DD7 is disabled and autistic and under a lot of specialists at the hospital.
We also buy flavored water.
They all drink milk and we have decaffeinated tea and coffee if they want it.
She has problems with her bowels and stomach as well.I know how you feel OP it's horrendous having to watch your little one struggle to do something(go to the toilet)that's so easy for so many others.

RandomNPC · 21/02/2015 10:02

mrssmith79, thank fuck for that. I thought I was going mad.

ThatBloodyWoman · 21/02/2015 10:05

I wasn't aware that discussions never diversified on mn.
Blimey.
How boring if we all give a one line answer to a specific question on every thread.

Some of us are just trying to join in,not be smug, and have reason for our choices.
I can't do anything if people with perfect children with perfect teeth give their children coke by the gallon if thats what they think they can get away with. But I'd like to be able to join in the discussion and offer alternatives.

But I do care if my choices as a result of my childs problems are trashed by people trying to point score.

I'll fuck off now and pour a large oj for dd so she can fit in.

I drink squash and diet coke - 45 and still no fillings

so shove that up your pure mountain spring water and unicorn milk drinking asses Grin

sorry but smugness irritates me

oh and when you have small kids it's easy to control what they consume - wait till they start secondary - they'll be gorging on blue slushies Grin

VeronicaCaCa · 21/02/2015 10:25

I expect the OP has long since hidden this thread and I don't blame her. She wasn't asking IF she should give her DD squash FFS she was asking for brand recommendations.

Grin mrssmith79

screamingeels · 21/02/2015 10:27

ThatBloodyWoman I don't think you are the worst on this thread - you are right you did answer the question. However a lot of people have turned up to answer the question "what squash do your childen drink' by telling OP she is a terrible parent and her children will suffer.

In our house DC drink loads of sugar free squash. I'd rather they didn't but DH is SAHD and does all shopping, cooking, cleaning and weekday childcare. Inconveniently he would never drink water and is slim, fit with great teeth - so my arguments (basically some version of the MN consesus is... with occasional forays into actual research) are a bit limp. I pick my battles - which are currently ensuring cereals are no more than 25% sugar. (the nothing but plain porridge contingent faint).

editthis · 21/02/2015 10:29

OP, just a thought: I don't much like drinking water and find it's more palatable when I have it warm, topped up from the kettle (same goes for squash); my daughter is the same, more likely to finish a cup if it's warm rather than cold or room-temperature. (It's common to drink hot/warm water in lots of Asian countries too; meant to be good for the digestion.) So might that be worth a try too, to help her finish her drinks and keep drinking lots? Hope so, and that her tummy problems clear up soon.

scratchandsniff · 21/02/2015 10:35

I haven't read the full thread but to answer the OP's question, I give DS weak cups of Sainsbury's sugar free squash. It doesn't contain aspartame.

EatDessertFirst · 21/02/2015 10:36

Haven't RTT due to vitriol against squash. Its boring and repetetive. Horses for courses and all that. DS (4) has water and milk at nursery and water, milk and weak squash at home. DD (6) is a water refuser (and yes, she'd rather be ill than drink water) so she has weak squash all the time.
Asda High-Juice, the flavours without Aspartame is the brand we use.
For the record, both have perfect teeth, are perfect weight and have no other issues linked to drinking squash. And yes, I have read a lot about the effects of drinking squash.

AggressiveBunting · 21/02/2015 10:44

Ok- caveat- mainly water but also sometimes Ribena. The one with sugar in it. Dentist says drink it in one go and it's unlikely to be a major issue. Teeth decay worst when teeth constantly bathed in sugar rather than periodic hits. Also cartons of apple or orange juice sometimes or fresh lime soda with a smidge of sugar syrup.
