To ask what squash/juice you give your children to drink?

My two daughters aged one and five, drink about 1 litre of diluted squash a day (they do not drink milk or water it anything else). I am happy with them drinking squash as at least they are drinking (which is very important due to constipation problems with youngest). I used to give them watered down fresh apple juice but the dentist mentioned this was too acidic for their teeth to have throughout the day. So I changed to apple high juice (not sugar free), the dentist at this times checkup said this was basically like giving them sugar water to drink and is bad for their teeth and advised me to change to sugar free squash. I am reluctant to do this due to asparatem? What do you all give your children to drink (those of you that use squash/juice)? Thank you in advance

I buy Robinson's sugar free squash for me and DS and use a little in each glass (so that you can still see through the drink). We find water boring so I think this is fine. I've been drinking it for most drinks all my life and I'm now 35 with lovely teeth so I'm not concerned at all.

ThatBloodyWoman · 21/02/2015 14:42

Random I think you'll find if you give her a couple of pints of Stella she'll quieten down.
Ok its not recommended, but don't forget how cool it is to show the guidelines are a load of rot and only for other people's children Wink

MERLYPUSSEDOFF · 21/02/2015 14:53

Mine would drink milk by the cowful to the detriment of eating anything as they'd be full up. For that reason I let them have hi juice squash, more dilute than I would have it, water, juice ( a sherry size glass with their tea, undiluted) or on sunday we have fizzy with lunch. Their dental heigene is good and they don't drink sweet stuff unless with a meal.

Glad you are sorted op Smile.

VeronicaCaCa · 21/02/2015 15:28

Glad you managed to weed out the good advice op and ignored the smuggery.

We have aldi's sugar free diluting juice (orange & blank currant) but it's only drunk at tea time. DC have milk or fruit juice at breakfast. School only allows water with milk at lunch. Ds1 likes flavoured water occasionally. They both drink milk in the evenings. They are allowed fruit shoots etc but I believe in moderation,

Fwiw no one in the family (adults or children) have any fillings or had any cavity-related extractions

Come on, someone on MN must have a bloody filling. I've got a few, but I've still got all my own teeth.

HowCanIMissYouIfYouWontGoAway · 21/02/2015 15:47

I do. I've got two white ones.

Brushing with Golden Syrup was probably a mistake.

Lozy79 · 21/02/2015 15:54

Ive started filling a big jug with cut up fruit to give the water a bit of flavour. Seems to be working and we are getting the extra vitamins too.

RandomNPC · 21/02/2015 15:57

Cutted up pears?

Brooki25 · 21/02/2015 16:00

I give mine sugar free squash, I think the amount of liquid he drinks help him keep regular, rather than what's in it Smile

RingtheBells · 21/02/2015 16:00

I have a lot of fillings and not a lot of teeth, more to do with the 60's and 70s, drill and fill dental regime, sugar sandwiches, which I remember having when I was young, chewy sweets etc. than squash which I don't recall having much. Also a lot of luck, DH was bought up on the same sort of diet when he was young but didn't visit the dentist and has only one filling.

KeepsTrying · 21/02/2015 16:03

DS just had milk, water or diluted apple juice until he was about five and a friend and her children came to stay with us for the weekend. He was then introduced to the world of squash (and sugar on cereal but I didn't let him try that) - being weak I gave in (because actually I like it too!) and he had Robinson's special R for years, then Waitrose sugar free but a couple of months ago he declared he didn't like squash any more and we are back to milk or water.

I too was a result of the cash for fillings / drill and fill regime of the 70s. Every molar apart from 6 of mine are filled. I also had loads pulled out. I think my dentist was on commission!
This was in the days were there were no 'kids' sweets, yoghurts, or snacks. Sweets were just sweets. I only really remember Frosties or Rice Krispies being marketed for kids.

TerryTheGreenHorse · 22/02/2015 09:31

Derek we used to get fruit shoots for my nephew and fill the bottles back up, he never knew.

Some people are unlucky with their teeth and others are fine. It's probably the least of your worries considering your DD2's constipation issues, but I would say that if your DD1 drinks lots of squash and isn't showing signs of tooth problems then they have lucked out and you don't need to worry.

For what it's worth I go for the high juice squash option rather than artificial sweeteners. I'm a sugar and sweetener-avoider myself but prefer my kids to have basic carbs rather than a stack of sugar replacements. They are lucky to have teeth that don't seem to be susceptible to decay.

Having said that, if I didn't mind the after taste of various sweeteners I probably wouldn't have such an issue with them! Regardless of the horror stories you can read about sweeteners online they are not clinically proven to be 'bad'. And frankly if your DD is happy to drink it and it helps her medication then that trumps everything else! Lets face it, not being able to poo is far worse for your body than the marginal side-effects of drinking slightly sweetened water.

m0therofdragons · 22/02/2015 10:23

I've recently gone into hi juice as I realised I don't like the sugar free stuff. Mine do like milk too.
I use straws so the juice goes to the back of the mouth and less on the teeth. Never put juice in a bottle and never give a dc a drink in their cot other than water. This is the advice from my friend who is a dentist who specialises in children's teeth. Yes water is best but as a parent we weigh up the risk. Some people need to get off the prefect parent soap box.

m0therofdragons · 22/02/2015 10:25

I don't have any fillings either.

funkyfeline13 · 11/01/2016 23:22

lots of juices don't have aspartame in them, you just have to read the labels and everything is bad for your teeth even fruit so regular brushing with floride free toothpaste is best.
