To ask what squash/juice you give your children to drink?

My two daughters aged one and five, drink about 1 litre of diluted squash a day (they do not drink milk or water it anything else). I am happy with them drinking squash as at least they are drinking (which is very important due to constipation problems with youngest). I used to give them watered down fresh apple juice but the dentist mentioned this was too acidic for their teeth to have throughout the day. So I changed to apple high juice (not sugar free), the dentist at this times checkup said this was basically like giving them sugar water to drink and is bad for their teeth and advised me to change to sugar free squash. I am reluctant to do this due to asparatem? What do you all give your children to drink (those of you that use squash/juice)? Thank you in advance

Agree 100% Constipation in children can be serious. I speak from experience it's not pleasant giving a glycerin suppository.

Wow op I hope you're taking all the milk and water drinkers with a pinch of salt.
My dd (3yo) has never had tummy problems but from being one was drank robinsons no added sugar by the gallon! She drinks constantly, all day long. Yet offer her only water and shed refuse and always would have. I don't think there's any thing wrong with sugar free squash?! Ffs you're hardly poisoning them!! It's not like all they drink is Pepsi!!! If I were you I would switch to any sugar free be it robinsons, sainsburys or whatever and not give it another thought! Hope your little one gets their tummy issues sorted x

My two drink squash.
Due to a couple of Mums giving me a 'look' re aspartane stuff I try and get the sucrolose stuff but not religiously.
I tend to get things on offer.
In Tesco buy Panda [99p usually], blackcurrent flavour.
Sugar free vimto when on offer.
However at moment got sugar free lime juice [Tesco]which pretty sure is aspartane but boys love it and was on offer. Don't make it very strong though. However they complain cos my Mum much more loose wristed with sploshing the concentrate.
I prefer sugar free as teeth cleaning can be a bit hit and miss in the mornings. No fillings so far.
They drink water at school as not allowed juice there.

Mominatrix · 20/02/2015 19:03

What is so grim about milk and water? I don't drink juice, and never have and don't understand why it is a necessity?

Growing up, I only had milk, water or bodechamul (a korean boiled barley water). Never felt deprived.

DamFineBeaver · 20/02/2015 19:05

Wow op I hope you're taking all the milk and water drinkers with a pinch of salt.
OneDay, are you advocating the OP eating SALT as well as the plutonium-squash? And feeding it to her DC, no doubt. Shame on you.

monkeyfacegrace · 20/02/2015 19:05

Oooh I've just checked the label of my Asda double concentrate and look, no aspartame. I must be an awesome parent by default

To ask what squash/juice you give your children to drink?
monkeyfacegrace · 20/02/2015 19:07

Ah fuck it, just checked the orange and mango version and that one's got aspartame.

I'm getting back in my box Grin

MrsTerryPratchett · 20/02/2015 19:07

I hope you're taking all the milk and water drinkers with a pinch of salt. Why? Some kids are like that. Mine is. When she did get constipation when she was little I couldn't get juice down her, she doesn't like it. It's a pain when we go to parties and I have to ask for water as there is only juice or pop. I look like a right smug mummy.

GymBum · 20/02/2015 19:11

It's been a while since I was on MN, I forgot how these juice vs water vs diet threads always end. Grin

DamFineBeaver · 20/02/2015 19:12

MrsTerry, I don't think anyone's doubting the existence of the milk and water drinkers. Just the "squash is a poison" attitude. Smile
The OP was asking about brands, so coming on to say how well you do by following all the no-squash advice when the OP doesn't have that option just seems a bit pointless. (not talking about you)

bigbluestars · 20/02/2015 19:17

I have nothing against squash or even coke. I keep both in my home. We all prefer water as a drink- nothing beats it when you are very thirsty.

There is always an option not to have squash.
I grew up in poverty. Squash was very rare, milk was expensive too, and I can't remember friut juice in the house ever- so it was either water or go thirsty.
We survived.

Squash is unnecessary.

DustyGold · 20/02/2015 19:20

I'm in my late 40s and despite not being well off we always had squash; imagine full sugar version.
Got into trouble with my Grandpa as laughed in shock when he expected me to drink water 'but that is for baths' I said.
Much embarrassment from my parents!

Shizzy · 20/02/2015 19:20

My DD also has constipation issues and we have a ready supply of Movicol in this house. She drinks Robinsons sugar free squash.

TinyTearsFirstLove · 20/02/2015 19:28

Mainly water or milk. When they were about three, I offered fresh orange/apple juice diluted with 10 parts water to one part juice every now and again.
Now they're school age, they occasionally ask for squash if we're eating out but they're still usually happy with water.
Their cousin refuses water but when I gave her regular orange squash, I diluted it so much, you could barely see the orange colour and she still drank it so I reckon you could just gradually reduce the strength.

captainfarrell · 20/02/2015 19:34

If thats what you like gym bum then all power to you(but i don't believe you )i think your name gives you away....

GymBum · 20/02/2015 19:40

Captain Believe me or not it's irrelevant. Each to their own. If people want to give their kids juice or water all power to them. I don't care either way. My original response was more to do with Ops DD constipation bearing in mind my DD may end up needing surgery to resolve hers. Fingers crossed that won't happen.

As for my name, well that's exactly what I love doing for a hobby. I don't expect others to do the same.

steff13 · 20/02/2015 19:45

Do they sell something like this there? It's flavored but unsweetened. It comes in other flavors, I just got strawberry basil. You add a few squirts to your water.

We didn't give or kids juice when they were little, we only offered milk and water.

EugenesAxe · 20/02/2015 19:53

I give all full fat squash or diluted juice. At the moment they have Robinsons, Ribena or Waitrose Hi-Juice.

My two often drink water or milk but occasionally DS wants Ribena or orange.

BeverleyCrusher · 20/02/2015 19:57

We just get the supermarket own brand ones, usually sainsburys which are nice. I get the sugar-free ones. They are just as bad for teeth as the sugary ones due to acid, so I keep them to mealtimes, but understand why you can't. I also do diluted fruit juice or jugs of water with floaty fruit at mealtimes.

For the snack time ones I would just make as dilute as you can get away with to protect their teeth. I also give mine (5 and 3) cups of tea during the day, usually decaf as that's what I drink. We started doing this at around 2 years, when I got fed up of sharing mine with them. Some people think this is bad for some reason, I don't particularly care :)

Horseradishes · 20/02/2015 20:00

Sainsbury sugar free squash too, as they have a policy of no.aspartame in any own.brand products. Occasionally I treat myself to some of their real lemonade or cherryade for the same reason Smile

Ahchoo · 20/02/2015 20:10

Beverley, tea probably isn't the best for little ones as there's something in it calles tanin that can prevent iron absorption. Sorry, hope that doesn't come across as being patronising, entirely your decision of course. Just thought I'd mention it incase you didn't know.

Bellejessleo · 20/02/2015 20:15

I agree with everyone who says squash in moderation is absolutely fine, my dc drink a combination...water, milk, orange/apple juice, squash (normal not sugar free), I even give them tea if they want it...with sugar in!! And if we go out and ds wants a fizzy pop I let him as a treat! Shock Both of them brush their teeth well in the morning and at night. Their teeth are beautiful and perfect, no problems at all.

captainfarrell · 20/02/2015 20:19

Good for you GYMBUM! It's amazing how we all grew up fine and dandy isn't it? What with all the colourings and sugar of the 70s and 80s. All in moderation i say! Tea is excellent Horseradish, full of flavanoids i believe and am sure your little ones aren't drinking copious amounts of the stuff!
