Please tell me what's wrong with my mouth, I'm in severe discomfort.

Woke up four days ago with slightly sore and inflamed gums, a sore throat and sinus pain up to my ears and ears. By the second day the sinus pain was dreadful and the gums had developed raw patches. It's got worse and worse until today. My entire mouth is so tender and inflamed that there is even a raw patch on the inside of my lip where my tooth has rubbed against it. Saw a lovely but very young dentist who saw no sign of infection and thought the gums would settle down with brushing. He observed that it looked like I had 'burn marks' and after suggesting that I'd jagged myself with a tooth brush, told me to return in a week. Apparently the throat pain is unrelated.
Surely gum disease doesn't come out of nowhere like this? I can't take a week in this discomfort and it's only getting worse. Phrase help!

Poor you should see a GP really. Suck some ice cubes maybe? Take painkillers...can you go today to the doctor?

saturnvista · 19/02/2015 09:21

I saw a gp who said they don't really do gums. She sent me to the dentist.

Can you see another dentist? The one you saw doesn't sound very knowledgeable...

My friend had something called burning mouth syndrome that sounds like this. It was so uncomfortable. It took her along time to sort it but accupuncture was the only thing that made it go away. this was after various anti biotics etc and months of Drs visits.

There is a cold virus going around at the moment that seems to be affecting the roof of the mouth etc Its odd, but both I and a friend have the same thing along with a sinusy cold.

saturnvista · 19/02/2015 09:26

I've made an appointment to see another dentist but don't trust them now. Will look up burning mouth syndrome, thanks.

Me and my two dc are in the tail end of the most horrendous cold which has given us dreadful hacking coughs and the sore mouth you describe...the roof of my mouth, uvula and throat are inflamed and very, very sore. Gums are throbbing and I feel utterly miserable and unwell. Also have sinus pain and conjunctavitis. DH asked if there was any chance of a shag and I could easily have killed him dead- not a sign of the virus hitting him but a few pans might if he carries on whistling and being cheerful

I had appalling mouth pain just before Xmas. Saw an emergency dentist who blamed gum recession and over brushing, said I mugs have exposed a nerve. The next day the pain was worse than labour! Saw my own dentist the following day who took X-rays etc and decided there must be an infection in the gum. Course of antibiotics dealt with the pain. It's still not right, and we've since isolated the discomfort to a wisdom tooth so that is coming out soon.

NutBiscuit · 19/02/2015 09:37

Gatekeeper"...oh me god, me too! Exactly as you describe. OP I started off 4 weeks ago with multiple recurring mouth ulcers and sore patches on my tongue and inside of my mouth. This then developed into a cold, sinusitis, and finally conjunctivitis. Still not 100% now so I hope you don't go down the same route! I saw my GP who said virus, nothing they can do. Just waiting it out now. Like Gatekeeper*, my DH is blissfully unaffected and DS only had a sniffly nose, no other symptoms.

Wow! All you poor, poor things! This sounds terrible!

Ouch at all these stories of dreadful pain! It sounds as if this could be a virus that will go in its own time then..my dp wouldn't dare ask if there was any chance of a shag...

Last year I had a virus, started as a bit of a cold then I had a raging temperature/achiness and started to develop raw patches all over my gums/roof of my mouth. My tongue looked red, had a really sore throat and felt very unwell. Lasted just over a week but I couldn't eat or talk during.

Gatekeeper · 19/02/2015 10:19

NutBiscuit it is slightly comforting to think I'm not the only one like this; I look like a sea monster..hair like mattress stuffing as I can't be bothered to sort it, reddened, flaking nose from blowing, red eyes, skin like liver sausage. Annoying neighbour has just been round and visibly recoiled at the sight of me so I coughed on him a bit so he gets it
