Do you agree with slandering on facebook?
Someone broke into a car and there picture was put on Facebook and they then received threats etc people did not know his background. Therefore this person who had mental health issues ended up committing suicide. I was trying to explain this in conversation with MIL and she went into one about how they desevered it and I said what if your picture was out up and everyone was told about you being a benifits fraud and she said it was completely different ha Shock

If someone has mental health issues and they commit suicide, it is unlikely that the suicide is only because of the FB picture.

Posting someone's picture all over Facebook without their consent is nearly always a stupid thing to do, but if it's a proven fact that they are a criminal and a post is a truthful and informative one, then I can't say I have more sympathy for the criminal than for the victim of their crime just because they have been publicly exposed.

How is it slander if it's fact? He's a criminal, mh issues or not. Personally I'd take said picture to the police and not plaster it on social media but I might feel differently if it happened to me.

Retromama008 · 16/02/2015 10:33

There suicide was directly linked to the facebook post as they wrote a note explaining that they could not cope with the embarrassment the post has caused. Although it could have been a number of other things that would have eventually caused this to happen in the long run. I just wish people would think about the other side when posting on Facebook

But if it is a fact then why would people feel anything but angry with the person who committed a crime. I doubt people are going to sit down and think what if they had mh issues. Also it couldn't be just over one photo that caused such drastic actions.

Bailey101 · 16/02/2015 10:41

It sounds harsh, but I have no sympathy. If he couldn't deal with the repercussions he shouldn't have committed a crime. It makes me so mad when excuses are made for criminals and we're told that we should be sympathetic because they've got issues - plenty of people have mh issues or shitty childhoods or stressful families, most of them deal with life without hurting others.

Retromama008 · 16/02/2015 10:45

I am not making excuses for criminal I just think there is a justice system in place for a reason why should facebook be used for this when it could have been reported to the police rather than the photo put on Facebook and then for people to give him abuse and make threats which is another crime in itself yet nothing was done about their crime

You're right that there is a justice system in place for a reason, but with crimes like breaking into cars, the system really doesn't work very well. If we could all be confident that reporting the person we know broke into our car would be arrested and appropriately punished for their crime, then people wouldn't feel the need to find any other form of justice.

There are a lot of circumstances surrounding this particular death, but I don't think the blame can solely be put on a Facebook picture. Maybe it could have been prevented if the police were more effective with crimes like this, maybe it could have been prevented if the mental health services we have weren't so dire, maybe it could have been prevented if this man chose someone else's car to break into.

But being unable to cope with embarrassment is a mental health issue, not an issue with whoever has embarrassed them. Many people could be publicly embarrassed, it doesn't usually lead to suicide.
