Its not really aibu but feel this is gaining tumble weed in wedding.

Most of the cake toppers I've seen are awful. They are cartoony, or feature the bride chaining up the groom, or zombies.

I like this one.

But also featuring two dds.
My dd said she wants to draw us instead. Shes five. I don't know what to think. I love the idea but what do you guys think of something like this?

I know, I know, link has the smoosh brangelina in it which is aibu in itself Grin

If you and DH-to-be like the idea, why not? The only way anyone but you is going to remember your cake topper in a year's time is if it is really sensational, really unusual, or really inappropriate. As long as you vet the drawing before it goes on the cake to make sure it's not inappropriate, I don't see the problem. I don't think she'd be likely to intentionally draw something inappropriate, but you might end up with something like this (that one isn't a real drawing by a small child, but I could see something inadvertently embarrassing cropping up).

I would get her to make the drawing well in advance, or else have an alternative cake topper lined up, in case she can't make a drawing that she's happy enough with.

Thank you SO Much Smithneejones

I appreciate that!! :)

I'm not gonna lie I was nervous after reading the forum haha!

Thank you I needed that!

smithneejones · 13/02/2015 18:49

pixellette you must remember that most of these posters don't like toppers at all.

The ones that they like are not to my taste.

Your toppers remind me of the animation in Flight of Concords.

To be honest I may not have liked your toppers if I wasn't about to buy one. Its just now I've been hunting for one I really appreciate the skill you've put into yours and that there aren't any others like it. I also do not think the price you are charging is expensive for what is essentially a personalised drawing.

They also didn't like the ceramic animal ones and I love them too. I guess your buyers have more alternative taste!

PS your toppers are the kind that feature in Rock and Roll Brides and Off Beat Brides.
If you are more of a Town and Country Weddings sort of girl then I suspect you might get a very tasteful sugar flower arrangement!

What smithneejones said, your drawing style is lovely thepixelette Smile

thepixelette · 13/02/2015 19:24

Thank you! Yes I do have a different client, that is true! Its the kind of wedding I wanted to have. I definitely searched for the non traditional when I shopped for my wedding. I think most of my customers shop for the illustration and that rock and roll bride, off beat bride, vintage-mod type of feel to their cake. I've even done some more traditional toppers too. I just like the way brides come to me with the designs, I think thats the best!

Thank you trufflesnout! :)

TheRealMaryMillington · 13/02/2015 19:32

I have come round to the etsy one after seeing the pile of naffola other suggestions.

Pixellette - didn't mean to offend, sorry! - I can see that you are a good graphic artist, just don't like it on top of a cake.

FWIW I can't even remember what, if anything was on top of our cake. It tasted unbelievable though.

cluecu · 13/02/2015 19:41

Not read the whole thread but if you like it go with it. I learnt from my wedding that no-one else cares about this kind of detail at all. me and my best mate both had very personal style cake toppers but I don't think anyone else noticed Wink

HaveTeaWillSurvive · 13/02/2015 19:51

I just bought something like this, cheap and did the job.

HaveTeaWillSurvive · 13/02/2015 19:53

Sorry meant to say but if you are happy for your DD to do it go for it, it's the little personal touches that make a wedding IMO

Andcake · 13/02/2015 19:57

The only one I like is the Mollie makes one. Go for it - if in one colour and white it will be fine. Who gives an damn what others think people live a bitch about a wedding I would prefer they bitch about that than the dress, brides maids, booze or food - it's personal. I have been to loads of weddings and can't remember one cake topper or even my own tbh

Agrestic · 13/02/2015 20:08

Oh Christ Grin

WhatAHooHa · 13/02/2015 20:19

Could you get her to draw each of you then get a local cake maker/decorator to recreate those drawings in fondant icing? In the style of these www.budsies.com/purchase ?

FightOrFlight · 14/02/2015 00:21

I think I may have misunderstood what a cake topper is, I assumed it lay flat on the cake.

Either way I still say that it's a lovely idea to let your daughter design it.

We had 2 teddy bears on top of ours, beautiful!

I'm assuming that was a jokey comment as in 'nafftastic' (may be wrong as we all have different tastes)

FightOrFlight · 14/02/2015 00:23

Oh lord, NO to the budsie bear shite Shock

smithneejones · 14/02/2015 04:20

Hang on... Budsie on a cake? Hmm

The cake topper I wand stands upright.

OP posts:
WhatAHooHa · 14/02/2015 09:08

No, not a budsie on a cake. I was suggesting your dd's drawings be made into 3d models out of icing. The paper toppers just looked a bit nothing-y to me tbh, like a bit of printer paper scribbled on and shoved on top in a last minute panic.

landrover · 14/02/2015 10:28

Yes Fight, 2 bears!!! Grin They were little iced bears though, honestly very cute!! Theres no accounting for taste is there! Grin

KindleFancy · 14/02/2015 10:40

I hate all cake toppers tbh (the 'typical' ones with people that is).

We had a bunch of sugar roses on top, which trailed down one side.

Why people spend a fortune on a beautiful cake and then ruin it by sticking something kitsch or crass on top is beyond me.

FightOrFlight · 14/02/2015 11:17

Aha landrover I thought you meant actual furry teddy bears, like those little beanie feckers with a heart saying "I Love You" < boak >

landrover · 14/02/2015 11:26

Ha ha flight!!! I am loving this thread!! Grin

fatlazymummy · 14/02/2015 12:47

kindlefancy it's just a cake meant to be eaten, not a work of art or sculpture. They don't have to cost a fortune either.

smithneejones · 14/02/2015 17:40

But I like kitsch! I remember being a child and loving my cousins cake topper. It was like a kinder egg toy...on a cake!

OP posts:
TheIronGnome · 14/02/2015 17:53

I've done it with children before where I roll out the flowerpaste and get them to use edible ink pens and paint to colour the paste before I cut the flowers out. That could be a nice way for your dd to have a hand in making a contribution? Provided you know someone who does sugar flowers that it... you're not in London are you??
