Its not really aibu but feel this is gaining tumble weed in wedding.

Most of the cake toppers I've seen are awful. They are cartoony, or feature the bride chaining up the groom, or zombies.

I like this one.

But also featuring two dds.
My dd said she wants to draw us instead. Shes five. I don't know what to think. I love the idea but what do you guys think of something like this?

I know, I know, link has the smoosh brangelina in it which is aibu in itself Grin

What sort of cake are you having? How many tiers?

Couldn't you have fresh flowers like this?

smithneejones · 13/02/2015 15:44

No flowers. Hay fever!

MissPhonic, there's nothing wrong with a child's pictures at all - they are lovely for the parents (in particular) to see - but surely to god they're not appropriate on top of a wedding cake!

PercyGherkin · 13/02/2015 15:44

smithneejones - you and OH shouldn't care what other people think, but if I was a guest at your wedding I would think a picture by your daughter was really sweet, two unicorns wearing wedding clothes hilariously awful, and the one with the duck and the woman would make me think you're into illegal sexual practices.

Nomama · 13/02/2015 15:45

A small floral arrangement that mirrored the bridesmaids bouquets!

All that Toppery Stuff makes feel a bit Confused

smithneejones · 13/02/2015 15:46

percy we are! Shock

A friend had sugared flowers, another had their initials in silver, one had a picture of two martial artists in plastic figurines (where they first met).

smithneejones · 13/02/2015 15:47

Wow! I never knew toppers were so 'yesterday'

WyldChyld · 13/02/2015 15:47

Oh, Lord, they're awful. Sorry.

I had two small crystal cocktail glasses as toppers because we didn't want any figurines. Miniature versions of this

I loved them but we also had pattern in the cake, lace, pins and something simple and beautiful set it off

PercyGherkin · 13/02/2015 15:48

So sorry - didn't appreciate your DP actually was a duck. Blush

smithneejones · 13/02/2015 15:50

He's a descendant of the Muscovy duck

The only things on top of wedding cakes I've ever liked were flowers.

I've just googled cake toppers and couldn't see a single one I would choose. They seem to fall into three categories 'comedy', bling or twee.
(Maybe a 4th of odd for that one your DP likes)

The Molly makes one looks sweet, it suits the cake it's on though. What's your cake like?
How much does the look of everything matter to you?
I think it could be really lovely.

smithneejones · 13/02/2015 16:04

Not really an aesthetics person! My cake will be tasty

Sorry but I think all of the eBay links are ... not great. Much prefer your ridiculous OTT Etsy one Smith (preferably pressed into and dwarfing a minuscule fairy cake) or DD's offering (do it do it).

MissPhonic · 13/02/2015 16:15

Imperial Absolutely appropriate for a wedding- a family occasion. Let me guess, you think the wedding is "all about me"?

I can't believe people waste £40 on something to stick on the top of a cake! I'm not married yet but me and DP have discussed that we'd rather put money towards a bigger house than a flashy big day. A recent family tragedy has shown to me that a secure home is more important than objects (sorry for the tangent).

Smithneejones Any chance of a slice of the cake? Give me an ugly tasty cake any day over style! Grin

ImperialBlether · 13/02/2015 16:17

That was a very poor guess, MissPhonic. Of course I don't believe a wedding is "all about me" - that's very insulting. It's just that a child's drawing belongs on a wall or on a fridge door, not on top of a wedding cake!

The child could make them a lovely card which they could keep forever. Her random wish to make a cake topper does not have to be indulged.

alwayssleepy · 13/02/2015 16:19

I think you should let her draw you, maybe she could draw it on shrinkles plastic, and then you could cut them out, shrink them and pop them in the top of the cake. Leave some plastic below in a point so they spike in. That way they would be plastic-ish, so will last better, and also any lines she draws will be made darker and detail will be finer. You can get shrinkles plastic in plain sheets on amazon.

MissPhonic · 13/02/2015 16:22

Imperial Who are you to decide where it belongs?

trufflesnout · 13/02/2015 16:23

I think the top of a wedding cake is a lovely place for your child's drawing!

youmakemydreams · 13/02/2015 16:26

I agree with MissPhonic sod anyone that thinks it looks tacky.
A child's picture has a place anywhere you want to put it. She will be so proud on the day seeing it on the cake and I'm sure you are only inviting friends and family who will probably be complimentary to your dd and make a bit of a fuss about it.

God I'm definitely not sharing any details on here of my wedding this year some people are so bloody rude. Thank goodness we all have different tastes it would be a dull life if not. If you and your dp would be happy with a picture by your ds on top of your cake go for it and sod everyone else.

WorraLiberty · 13/02/2015 16:28

No, there's a time and a place for a 5yr old's doodlings and it's not on top of your wedding cake imo.

Patilla · 13/02/2015 16:32

We had stars on wires coming out of a central point in the top of the cake, a bit like a firework.

But it was over a decade ago so may not be "current".

But could your DD draw stars or hearts and do a similar idea?
