Its not really aibu but feel this is gaining tumble weed in wedding.

Most of the cake toppers I've seen are awful. They are cartoony, or feature the bride chaining up the groom, or zombies.

I like this one.

[Link removed by MNHQ at OP's request as it linked to a personal Etsy page. See new link in OP's next post.]

But also featuring two dds.
My dd said she wants to draw us instead. Shes five. I don't know what to think. I love the idea but what do you guys think of something like this?

I know, I know, link has the smoosh brangelina in it which is aibu in itself Grin

I agree maybe it wouldn't work at the sort of wedding where an engraved glass heart topper or miniature crystal glasses would fit in - but from OP's original linked topper I'm sure the wedding is much more easygoing than that sort of thing and the 5 yo's drawing would fit right in.

UnalignedAnt · 13/02/2015 16:37

I don't like it. Find it eye-rollingly twee. But it's your cake! And it'll be tasty, whatever's on top.

Floggingmolly · 13/02/2015 16:37

If it's a straight choice between your child's drawing and that abomination of a pair of dressed up unicorns / ducks; go for the drawing every time...

AliceLidl · 13/02/2015 16:41

Weddings are becoming a bit more personal now and things like this are getting more popular because they are unique.

I can't see the harm in having your child draw your cake topper, if you want one and if she wants to do it.

My wedding would be very different if we had it now, instead of fourteen years ago. And if we'd had more time to plan it.

As it was, we did things differently enough that people still comment on bits of it that they hadn't seen at weddings before. And I didn't think we'd done anything too out of the ordinary.

I'm not keen on that Etsy topper either, its a bit too frills and bows for me. And the ones with the ducks and unicorns are actually more than a little bit terrifying, sorry. I'd go with asking your daughter to draw a few pictures and you choosing your favourite.

olaflikeswarmhugs · 13/02/2015 16:45

I think it's a lovely idea !!! Smile

landrover · 13/02/2015 16:47

Hmmmm, its like when you put your xmas tree and hide all your children's stuff to the back!!!! (sorry!!!) Hideous idea IMO Smile We had 2 teddy bears on top of ours, beautiful! Smile

GreyjoysAnatomy · 13/02/2015 16:47

I don't like it, sorry.

We had this on top of our cake though, so my taste may well be questionable Grin

landrover · 13/02/2015 16:48

OMG Grey!!! Ha Ha !!!!

GreyjoysAnatomy · 13/02/2015 16:50

I put the blonde hair on the bride and everything Grin

MrsTawdry · 13/02/2015 16:50

Oh I think this is BEAUTIFUL as an idea OP and I am nicking it as my own topper! My DDs can design ours. I think it's a great way to involve them and personalise the whole thing.

MrsFionaCharming · 13/02/2015 16:51

I love that Grey! Bookmarking for my future wedding.

Notso · 13/02/2015 16:52

Surely people can have whatever the hell they want on a wedding cake though imperial What with it being their wedding.

ImperialBlether · 13/02/2015 16:55

Well, of course they can, Notso!

The OP specifically asked what we thought, though. So I told her, as did many others. None of us is right. We can each give an opinion.

It's a discussion board. The OP raised a discussion.

fatlazymummy · 13/02/2015 16:57

You can put whatever you want on the top of your wedding cake. There aren't really any rules about what's appropiate and what isn't. No 'wedding cake topper law'.
OP, if that's what you want then go for it.

Zucker · 13/02/2015 16:58

What about getting your daughter to draw her picture and getting a cake decoration shop to print it as an edible image. It could be placed flat onto the top of the cake, over the fondant icing or whatever your cake will be covered in.

It could be printed as small discs too so could be added to the dessert course also if you wanted.

drbonnieblossman · 13/02/2015 17:01

Go to a cake decorating shop and buy a pack of florists paste and an edible pen. Roll out the paste and use a cutter to shape. Leave it a week to go very hard and then let her loose on it. If you do a few spares she can really go for it and then you can choose your favourite together. It will cost less than £5.00.

AgnesGrey · 13/02/2015 17:02

I would naturally go for fresh flowers but given not and you like the idea of DD doing something - what about making a whole load of the flags as in the link below and letting her decorate some of them - drawings , some with paint or sticking on paper flowers or whatever. If she does lots and lots you can pick out the best ones to go on the cake. It might look prettier than the one you linked to. That way she's involved but you have some input as to how it finally looks.

Imperial, your "Oh Christ" post is the nearest I have ever come to the spitting coffee out over the keyboard laughing thing.

OP - you sound like a good sport so I am sure your wedding will be great whatever you do.

Do not do the unicorns etc - it would be less scary to have the zombies. Also I think the couple in your first link are too reminiscent of the drawings in "The Joy of Sex" - bit creepy.

Pixa · 13/02/2015 17:05

I love it, very personal.

Then again, I am one of the brides that had a zombie wedding cake...

VisitTheInfidelWithExplanatory · 13/02/2015 17:14

I think it's a great idea, although it would be better to have it screen printed to go flat on top the cake then standing up. DS made our ring box out of Lego, it was very sweet.

thepixelette · 13/02/2015 17:37

HI! So the etsy topper is actually mine and the etsy site directed me to this forum, where unfortunately my topper is getting slammed ha!

I do other toppers. That particular topper was designed by the bride. All of my toppers are designed by the brides. I just draw out what they want. Its a custom order type of thing. But in my opinion, the great thing about Brad and Angelina is that they personalized their wedding to their every day life and what is most important to them. They didn't care about what others thought. If she wants to draw something I say do it! Thats something I try to do in my shop. I add a personalization to their wedding and I get thanked by the brides for creating their ideas and they get a great response from their guests. Whether it be zombies, which I've done too, or "too frilly" topper like the one someone added as a link to my shop. Don't worry about it :) Its your big day, not theirs! :)

smithneejones · 13/02/2015 17:40

Pixelette well I think your topper was the best one on etsy and I trawled through them all!

OP posts:
smithneejones · 13/02/2015 17:42

PS yours seem to be the only one that was a great price for what you get, especially as its personalised.

The other horrific toppers are sometimes £200!

I have looked and can't seem to find another cake topper artist like yours so you are a trend setter too!

OP posts:
Yarp · 13/02/2015 17:46

I don't see the problem

What it looks like is not the most important thing, as far as I am concerned. it's what it represents that is important.

And also, I think if you think a child's drawing even looks bad, then you are a a bit joyless, again IMO

Yarp · 13/02/2015 17:58

Been thinking about this a bit more. I think that this is my problem with traditional wedding trimmings all told. My own wedding was less important to me than what it represented
