Friend is having her first baby and everyone else in our group of friends has gone mental with clothes and toys etc...and I want o be practical (I'm always the ever boring practical one )

They've had to move back in with her parents so things like meals delivered etc won't be of much use (as her mother has told me strongly...

a vacuum mug with a lid, you know the ones!

Mummy mitts - awful name, great product. Mini changing bag - folds pretty flat with just room for a couple of nappies and a small pack of wipes - really useful for keeping in the car or bottom of the buggy. Bath support. Lambs fleece to go in car seat or buggy. Make up a bag with baby nail scissors, Calpol, teething gel etc. all those little things that when you need then you need them NOW!

Teething stuff, no one thinks of that!

I got my friend a Sophie the giraffe and a few Lamaze toys.

Like the idea of a little kit full of medicines (calpol / nurofen / kiddies olbas oil / baby decongestant chest rub / teething stuff) but I'd give something 'positive' as well. A medical kit just seems a bit depressing on its own?

The big lulujo muslins are fab, dvd boxsets, nice things for the house, candles etc as they'll be at home a lot.

I always go with nice muslins or a sleep sack. With the sleep sacks I include the receipt, they aren't for everyone.

Muslins....I went though LOADS every day. But I begrudged getting fancy ones so nice patterned ones would have been nice.

Thermos mug. Lost count the amount of times I made a brew only for it to go cold. That would have been VERY handy

A box set of DVDS or a good collection of magazines. Again great to help pass time when baby is permenently attached to boob

Quick n easy pamper stuff. Dry shampoo, nice hand cream (was constantly washing my hands after doing nappies n they did go dry quickly)

I know u said there meals will be sorted. But nice tea bags/biscuits/chocolates

Plenty of muslins (even the packs of Primark ones, they're cheap and they come in handy!)
A bag with essentials. I got a pack which was a folding travel change mat, wipes, a little sudocrem, a sudocrem care and protect and that was great, there was space to slip nappies in - we still use it now DD is 10mo.
A little teething survival kit? Bonjela, anbesol, Nelson's teetha granules, a few cooling teethers.
A lidded mug or one of those lidded cups with a straw; straws are a bloody godsend when you're feeding a baby whether it's breast or bottle feeding!!!
Lamaze toys are brilliant, DD loved Emily doll as a baby and now she loves Freddie firefly. Jellycat cuddlies are lovely too although I know you said everyone else is getting clothes and toys.
One thing that came in really handy for us was scratch mitts. We were given hats and socks and outfits and clothes but scratch mitts were desperately needed in the early days.

Oh yes and cake. When people brought me cake and biscuits I had to resist the urge to kiss them, I'd very narrowly avoided a blood transfusion and needed all the energy I could get!

Am also pregnant and to be honest id prefer something a bit more luxurious as a gift than the day to day stuff is buy myself, like some anais& Aden swaddling blankets or similar. Or a bamboo blanket maybe

If you want to be really boring get her a Sangenic nappy bin. I know some people say they're a waste of money, but I love being able to just shove nappies in there and not worry about them smelling. Plus refill canisters - they're pricey.

Also ditto PP who said Lansinoh. It's really expensive and you get through it quite fast.

And Metanium for nappy rash outbreaks. It's miraculous stuff.

And if you want to spend lots, then a Kindle. Much easier than a book when BF'ing.

We've got a Ewan the Dream Sheep for our newborn and it is magic.
