To object to paying £40 for a new bra?

PomBearWithAnOFRS · 12/02/2015 03:09

Just cos I have Norks! (with a capital N Grin )
There is one style and brand of bra that I have ever found, that I can just buy "off the shelf" that I know will fit me -as long as I take the bloody instrument of torture wires out - but the damn thing is at least £40 :(
I have tried others over the years, but they just don't fit, even in supposedly bigger sizes Confused
I tend to have one really tatty one, one with no wires in that is on the road to being tatty, and one newish one for "best".
Last time I bought one I got lucky and found one in my size on eBay for £25, but today I had to fork out forty quid :( and to add insult to injury my new knickers were a ridiculous price as well Confused
£48 for six pairs of giant pants!
I give up, I am becoming a hippy and wandering the streets commando, with my Mighty Norks swinging free in the breeze round my knees from now on!

Personally, I would pay £40.00 for a well fitting, comfortable bra. I don't understand why you take the wires out? If the wires are uncomfortable, are you sure the bra is the right size?

LordEmsworth · 12/02/2015 05:54

Well, you don't actually need matching knickers, so you could have bought 2 bras instead...

I recently got 2 bras - one same style but different colour as my favourite, one I bought on spec and love - from here for £40. They go up to JJ in some styles...

arlagirl · 12/02/2015 06:03

£40 for something you wear daily and gives you good support, is not a lot.

ShowMeYourTARDIS · 12/02/2015 06:03

I'm a 30HH and I live in the US, where nobody realizes there are band sizes below 32 or cup sizes above DD. I have to order all my bras online. I feel your pain.

Elomi and Goddess (US-based) have good bras for 34+ bands and larger busts.

antimatter · 12/02/2015 06:07

I think big bras have to be made with very good quality of materials.
Think also of all the engineering design which goes into making them!
They last too!

But 48 squid for 6 pairs of knickers? I wouldn't pay that much! I'd rather have one more bra!

OneDayWhenIGrowUp · 12/02/2015 06:13

Where are you buying from? I'm not a wholly unusual size (32F/FF) although rarely available off the shelf on the high street- I'd consider £40 or more standard for a full price bra. Think my most expensive was over £80. However have often bought them for much less in online sales (leia/bravissimo/figleaves etc) or from brastop which is always cheaper. Unless you genuinely are an N cup!?

OneDayWhenIGrowUp · 12/02/2015 06:22

Bloody hell- you take the wires out???!!! For why! That's what you're paying for, you fool!

Erm, have you been properly bra-interventioned?

vickibee · 12/02/2015 06:24

Have you tried evans they cater for the larger sizes and seem a good fit around twenty pounds

mummybare · 12/02/2015 06:36
  1. Measure under your boobs, around your rib age pulling the tape measure fairly tight. Write down measurement.

  2. Bend over so your boobs are hanging down and your back is parallel with the floor. Measure round your boobs at their widest part. Do not pull tight. Write down this measurement.

  3. Come and tell us these two numbers and stand back in amazement as the clever bra ladies tell you what size bra you should have been wearing all these years!

InMySpareTime · 12/02/2015 07:23

Ooh! I love a good bra intervention!

Chchchchanging · 12/02/2015 07:27

For the amount of work that goes into a bra, and then the lack of demand for all the sizes, I'm amazed bras aren't more expensive- they're complex to make.

InMySpareTime · 12/02/2015 07:42

FWIW my bras are about £40 each, I have no choice where to get them as only MiP makes 26GG bras (my post-intervention/weight loss size).
I'm happy to pay it for a decent product.

SorrelForbes · 12/02/2015 07:45

Did I hear the BI siren?

DopeyDawg · 12/02/2015 07:51

I need a BI too...

I'll measure, and get back to you.

KindleFancy · 12/02/2015 07:52

new knickers were a ridiculous price as well £48 for six pairs of giant pants

YABU. Generally, a well fitting bra will be expensive - not so with knickers.

You can get a pack of 6 Knicks for a fiver. If you choose to pay more yabu to moan about it.

JsOtherHalf · 12/02/2015 07:59

Brastop is usually worth looking at for previous seasons bras:

Ohmygrood · 12/02/2015 08:01

There are lots of ebay sellers that sell high street bras - freya etc. Try them.

lotsofcheese · 12/02/2015 08:02

Do you get fitted for bras, OP? I think it's always worthwhile & the fitters will often suggest different styles.

Aeroflotgirl · 12/02/2015 08:04

Have you tried Bravissimo, I am of large norkage and go there, and never look back. They even have soft bras in large sizes, I have never paid £40 for a bra there.

Another 32FF here and I get mine for £15-20 in the sales. Knickers are non-matching cheap and cheerful from New Look or George. No way would I pay £40 for a bra!

And Shock Confused at removing the wires!!

whattodoowiththeleftoverturkey · 12/02/2015 08:08

I've just finished getting dressed, so will have to measure later. Will you BI people still be here?

CatsCantTwerk · 12/02/2015 08:10

You remove the wires? Why would you do that?

gamerchick · 12/02/2015 08:12

Why do you take the wires out? They are important.

If they're uncomfortable they must be the wrong size.

treaclesoda · 12/02/2015 08:13

I'm as certain as it's possible to be that if you have to take the wires out then you're either wearing the wrong size or else you're wearing the right size but in a brand/style that isn't compatible with your shape eg wires come up too far under your arms, or are too far apart.

It's a bit like going shopping for size 16 trousers and then taking them in until they are a size 10. Or buying size 10 trousers and wearing them not zipped up because they're too tight.
