To object to paying £40 for a new bra?

PomBearWithAnOFRS · 12/02/2015 03:09

Just cos I have Norks! (with a capital N Grin )
There is one style and brand of bra that I have ever found, that I can just buy "off the shelf" that I know will fit me -as long as I take the bloody instrument of torture wires out - but the damn thing is at least £40 :(
I have tried others over the years, but they just don't fit, even in supposedly bigger sizes Confused
I tend to have one really tatty one, one with no wires in that is on the road to being tatty, and one newish one for "best".
Last time I bought one I got lucky and found one in my size on eBay for £25, but today I had to fork out forty quid :( and to add insult to injury my new knickers were a ridiculous price as well Confused
£48 for six pairs of giant pants!
I give up, I am becoming a hippy and wandering the streets commando, with my Mighty Norks swinging free in the breeze round my knees from now on!

30H/32GG here depending on brand.

I used to resent having to pay a fortune for bras and bikinis (especially bikinis) compared to friends who are 30C/D for example. But you just learn to get very online-shopping savvy.

Figleaves often have 20% off which is when I stock up. Places like Very and ASOS have own range bikinis that go up to GG/H.

When measuring, say you get an odd number, am l right in thinking you just try the next size that exists?
27=28?
When l scooped, it made my beasts puff out the front and the wire rise up, that can't be right

Yep - generally going up one if your firm in the middle and down one if you're soft. The band is what provides a lot of the support.

And yep, the results of you scooping is that your breasts don't fit in the cups, so leak out over the top (you're used to them leaking out around the bottom and sides.) Definitely need a bigger cup. Each inch over your band size is a up size, so if you measure 27" under and 32" around, then you need to try sizes around a 28D

SleepRefugee · 12/02/2015 14:17

Interesting thread!

What size am I, oh clever bra interventionists?

34.5" underbust, 47" across Shock

ouryve · 12/02/2015 14:17

cookie 28H/30GG or thereabouts
Blacksquirrel around 34GG

Brastop have extra discount off sale prices today, btw. Just bought 3 new bras for £42!

ouryve · 12/02/2015 14:19

Sleep I get a bit hazy around bigger cup sizes, but around 34J, I think.

Feminine · 12/02/2015 14:21

Thank you our again
Kind of you to explain.
My new sift tape arrives tomorrow.
I'm eager to get the perfect fit...

cookietrue22 · 12/02/2015 14:24

Wow! Really?? Thank you so much.

Off to look at bra stop Flowers

SleepRefugee · 12/02/2015 14:25

Thank you, ouryve!

Currently in 36HH, might try 34J

SorrelForbes · 12/02/2015 14:26

Feminine No, it's not right. You need to go up in the cup, probably at least three sizes.

cookietrue22 Try a 28GG/H and 30G/GG as a starting point (I suspect 28 will be better in most brands)

MrsFionaCharming Measure around the fullest part holding the tape loosely. Honestly a 30E is not a big cup at all.

Blacksquirrel Try 34G/GG and 36FF/G (I suspect 34 will be better in most brands). Your 38E has the same cup volume as a 36F and a 34FF so I'm not surprised you're spilling out.

Yoruba Yes, bend over and then measure all the way round (across your back and then the fullest part of your breasts). Hold the tape loosely.

Peepants78 You definitely need to go up in the cup. The correct cup size will help avoid that squished flesh look (ie. back fat!). Can you get to a Bravissimo? That would be recommendation in the first instance to establish some core sizes. Good brands for larger norks include Panache/Sculptresse, Bravissimo, Fantasie/Elomi, Kris Line, Curvy Kate.

SleepRefugee Try a 34HH/J.

SorrelForbes · 12/02/2015 14:26

Oops, lots of x posts!

SorrelForbes · 12/02/2015 14:27

SleepRefugee Your 36HH has the same cup volume as a 34J but a slightly differently scaled cup IYSWIM? How does your 36HH feel/look?

SleepRefugee · 12/02/2015 14:29

Sorrel, a tighter band might be good as the 36 tends to ride up a bit after a while!

Thanks everyone.

SorrelForbes · 12/02/2015 14:31

It the band is riding up then yes, you definitely need to size down. How are the cups (after scopping)? Any overspill? If there is, then try a 34JJ too.

LucyLou2003 · 12/02/2015 14:36

Would you help me too Smile

Once ive got the two measurements, how do I calculate my size

GetSober · 12/02/2015 14:36

Do me, do meeeeeeee!

37" under bust, 49.5" across fullest part.

And I want extra points for having to measure myself with the metal tape measure out of the tool box. Man, that was COLD Shock

Feminine · 12/02/2015 14:38

Thank you sorrel very much :)

SorrelForbes · 12/02/2015 14:40

LucyLou2003 Each 1" represents a cup size.

GetSober Brrrrrrr. Try 36H/HH and 38G/H (and sizes around that). I would expect the 36s to be better.

emwithme · 12/02/2015 14:52

I measure 42 under-bust and wear (comfortably, no back fat splortage) a 38 band (or 40 if it's a supermarket).

My "best fitting" bra is a 38F from Boux Avenue (no back fat, flat central gore, lovely perky boobs sitting nicely all scooped into cup). I have four of it, in two colours.

M&S insist I'm a 48A Hmm Angry but then again my (tiny - size 8) MIL insists she's a 36B. The last time we bra-shopped together was just before my wedding and I didn't feel I knew her well enough to challenge it then!

GetSober · 12/02/2015 14:55

Brill, thankyou Sorrel

Smarterthantheaveragebeaver · 12/02/2015 15:52

Ooh do can I have a go? Ive just ordered and returned a load of stuff I thought was the right size. All my old stuff is giving up under the strain

95 cm under the bust

119 cm across 'em

Piffpaffpoff · 12/02/2015 16:03

Emwithme, I am a 36f and m&s reckoned I was a 40 or 42c, my poor boobs were squashed flat as pancakes!! The scary thing was, this was all being done by a trainee fitter, being supervised by a trainer who was agreeing with her!

Peepants78 · 12/02/2015 16:03

emwithme that helps me too. I think it fits in with what I was told up thread about band size.
Just told DH we are going underwear shopping. He's pleased, but apparently 42J/JJ doesn't sound as good as a DD cup! Charming.

shampaintaste · 12/02/2015 16:08

a 32dd in Debenhams is not the same as a 32dd in M&S so how does me measuring myself have any bearing, i just try them all on literally until i find one that fits!!

rallytog1 · 12/02/2015 16:16

Ooh, can I join? I know I'm in the wrong size but no idea what I should be so I definitely need a bra intervention. Measurements are 35 and 46 ins.

SorrelForbes · 12/02/2015 16:26

Smarterthantheaveragebeaver That (roughly) equates 37"/46.5". Start with 36GG/H and 38G/GG

shampaintaste No they're not the same, prinarily because M&S sizing/stock quality is dreadful! This method just gives you a starting point and is really useful for helping people make a big change in sizes. I'm a 30GG/H and sitll have to try on all new styles in a couple of sizes to see what works best.

rallytog1 Try 34H/HH and 36GG/H.
