There are three guys who I always switch stations when they come on, and they come on a lot. They are the three that had the biggest sales last year and all sing through their noses and are average / below average looking.

Its hardly rock n roll. Aibu to think they are rubbish music stars?

Slightly off the point but I was in HMV the other day and was shocked to see so many vinyl albums on sake. Amy Winehouse, £13.99, The Specials, £19.99, The Beatles, £14? Who is buying these? There must be a demand for them otherwise they wouldn't be on sale. I've actually kept all my old vinyl from the eighties as I couldn't bear to part from them but am really surprised to see it's coming back after all this time..,

entiledornot · 10/02/2015 22:03

I'm more surprised hmv still exists tbh. Vinyl has has been pretty constant in the last few years, unlike CDs.

I think vinyl might be making a come back, there does seem to be a lot of DJ's (DH knows loads) using turntables again rather than laptops.
I think you can buy them in the latest Argos catalogue. Along with old style Walkmans!

Got to agree OP - The music of the day doesn't inspire me and is just to a bit too blah.

I was a child of the 70s and 80s and grew up with the Van Morrison, Janice Joplin, Neil Young, and jazz and blues at home. Loved The Smiths, Depeche Mode, The Cranberries, They Might be Giants, Paul Simon and the Manchester indie bands.

I find myself at concerts with my Dad watching performers in their 60s and 70s who are still great - Leonard Cohen, Van Morrison, James Taylor. I've no real interest in seeing anyone from 2000 onwards.

Got tickets for Paul Simon in March and The Handsome Family!

It's a shame you won't listen to newer stuff, Loxley.

There are some truly brilliant Indy artists around. The fact that you can now record and edit an entire album with your iPhone means that bands who 10 years ago wouldn't have got the breaks can now get themselves out there.

I'm a bit into navel gazing prog rock lately, but currently listening to some Alt J. Really not blah.

LoxleyBarrett · 10/02/2015 23:02

Ouryve - I think it's just don't have the time to sit and listen like I used to. I probably would like more if I had the chance to do some real research - you used to hear such a mix on the radio and now it all sounds the bloody same. My children would rather listen to my iPod than the radio! I have a great photo of DS3 dancing along to The Smiths as a toddler.

I was listening to an podcast of Alison Moyet on Desert Islands Discs earlier and she said it should be about the sound and not the image; I couldn't agree more - I really don't care if you look awful and dress in a sack, you need to sound right.

Go on give me some suggestions and I will have a listen. I do quite like Gotye and Tom Odell - not sure i would pay to see them or download more than a song or two. Paloma Faith isn't bad either.

I LOVE Friendly Fires! Their album 'Pala', was fantastic!

Quite like Gregory Porter too.

There is good music around still, you just have to hunt around for it

(So not top 40)

leedy · 11/02/2015 09:01

"The Handsome Family"

They're hardly in the same age category as Leonard Cohen though, are they? (unless they're really hiding it well)

Agree, Loxley, that there's lots of interesting newer stuff around if you just look for it - as I said above I hear a fair amount of good stuff on 6 Music, The Quietus website has good recommendations (Pitchfork is ok too), This Is My Jam for social/friends' recs. You don't even have to delve into obscure indie releases to find good things, IMO: I love the latest Mark Ronson album.

leedy · 11/02/2015 12:59

FWIW, this is my This Is My Jam recent history (some old, some new, basically whatever I felt like sharing that particular week): www.thisismyjam.com/msleedy/songs

YANBU, they are total shite.

But cool the kids don't listen to it, or radio 1, or watch x factor.

bruffin · 11/02/2015 18:26

No faithless
the supposedly " cool" kids listen to them in secret abd pretend not to like them

ouryve · 11/02/2015 18:32

Have a listen to 6 music, Loxley. There's a much better variety on there.
