to feel sorry for young people and the boring music that is popular

There are three guys who I always switch stations when they come on, and they come on a lot. They are the three that had the biggest sales last year and all sing through their noses and are average / below average looking.

Its hardly rock n roll. Aibu to think they are rubbish music stars?

You can hear lots of good new stuff on, eg, 6 Music (or as DP calls it "the station for old musos like us pretending they are still young and with it").

I'm sure parents in the 20s were giving out about the awful jazz their children were listening to. Those children in turn were probably nonplussed as to why their children liked Frank Sinatra and Elvis Presley. Th Frank Sinatra generation were no doubt deeply unimpressed at their teenagers love for the Bay City Rollers, Rod Stewart and the Bee Gees, and were going around muttering 'is that meant to be a man or a woman'. etc etc etc. Twas ever thus.

leedy · 10/02/2015 10:49

[sorry, duplicate post]

If you know people who like music, This Is My Jam is a really good site as well, everyone puts up a new Youtube (or wherever) song every week and you can "follow" people whose musical taste you like. I've heard brilliant stuff there.

ClashCityRocker · 10/02/2015 10:54

Actually I think most kids nowadays have a far more diverse taste in music than we did growing up.

Anecdotally, we were very much 'pick your genre and stick to it' - a tape would cost £5.99 and no one really bought singles, so you had to be more conspicuous consumers.

You were either into pop, metal, grunge, punk or dance. And your friends were all into the same sort of music so you could borrow their tapes and music snobbery was rife.

Again anecdotally, my DNs and their friends tend to like a bit of everything - even older stuff. I borrowed dn13s iPod the other day and was quite shocked when AC/DC segued gracefully into Ezra.

squoosh · 10/02/2015 13:14

There's always been shit music being made and there's always been great music being made. That's about the size of it.

bruffin · 10/02/2015 13:20

My mum was that generation but still loved all our 70s 80s etc music as well. She even went to see Mcfly with DD and DD happily went to see Alfie Boe with her.

NaiceVillageOfTheDammed · 10/02/2015 13:26

It's got so bad I'm starting to listen to jazz.

I'm not in the least sorry for my own 'young person'. She enjoys disdaining the popular crap, and in this wonderous age, the occasional iTunes voucher allows her unlimited musical choice.

When I was a young person, popular meant Donny Osmond and the Bay City rollers. Ew.

Latara · 10/02/2015 13:54

As not such a young person (38) I like Trance (think Tiesto, Armin van Buuren) - but it's been around since I was about 20 anyway and I liked raving to it back then as well.

'Old' stuff I like is music from the 90s like the Prodigy, Goldie, Massive Attack, Nirvana, Soundgarden, Red Hot Chilli Peppers etc etc.

I like some of the modern cheesy pop music like Taylor Swift & Katie Perry... but Sam Smith I find quite boring.

leedy · 10/02/2015 13:55

I am an old person (42) and still in a band....

abigamarone · 10/02/2015 14:01

The OP could have been written at any time over the last 50 and possibly more years. And yes, sign of age.

Latara · 10/02/2015 14:04

I actually fancy Tiesto, he's hot... but he's always surrounded by gorgeous model-types so wouldn't look at me twice.

Quite a few of the dance / urban DJs & producers are fit so YABU that modern musicians can't be attractive. Even Ed Sheeran has a cute look about him.

It's deeply sad that I fancy unavailable famous people at my age, however I am single and I can't help looking!

ouryve · 10/02/2015 14:05

No idea who George Ezra and Sam Smith are.

I don't think DS1 knows, either. But then he's a generational anomaly who would rather buy a CD that he can hold in his hand than download music. I fully expect him to discover vinyl, in a few years.

Latara · 10/02/2015 14:08

My cousin's daughter is 15 (or 16 now? unsure) and she likes both modern alternative type music and older stuff too.
Her parents are 40 something hippy surfers, alternative types, so she listens to the music they are into as well.

I remember arguing with my dad on long car journeys over the music selection.

Now when he gives me a lift occasionally he listens to Classic Gold, when I get a lift off my drum n bass loving sister it's Radio 1.

I don't think its my age, yelle and skillex I like.

Hell I quite like that nick new Jonas song in a guilty pleasure way , m.youtube.com/watch?v=yw04QD1LaB0

Not surprised smiths partner left him, in fed up of his whiny songs. Might kill the work radio.

if you think 'young people' are buy those guys albums you are insane ! it's mainly old fuckers who like a nice tune

MamaMary · 10/02/2015 17:55

Discovered Sam Smith recently. Yes, I'm out of touch. :)

But I do enjoy his song 'Money on my mind'. Great for dancing to!

AllBoxedUp · 10/02/2015 19:12

I think it would be amazing to be a teenager now - instant access to all kinds of music and loads of time. It makes me a bit sad that I don't have time to devote to listening to new stuff anymore. I imagine it isn't

I think the late 90s was much worse than now for chart music - steps, spice girls, boyzone, and, dare I say, take that. There was lots of good indie stuff around too but the radio 1 playlist stuff was awful.

whothehellknows · 10/02/2015 19:52

I don't mind the odd song about booty in the mix. Meghan Trainor's catchy.
