There are three guys who I always switch stations when they come on, and they come on a lot. They are the three that had the biggest sales last year and all sing through their noses and are average / below average looking.

Its hardly rock n roll. Aibu to think they are rubbish music stars?

my DD14 is in total agreement - "music was SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO much better when you were younger mum" etc.....

I was a complete metalhead which amuses her and her friends no end - since now I am a small, fat, grey haired 50 year old sensible-cardi and mum boots type...

does not sit well with the photos of swigging from a contraband bottle of newcky brown alongside 3 members of AC/DC at Donnington park monsters of rock... you know how PARENTS are supposed to bring out the embarrassing kid pics when their friends come round... DD fetches out all mine!

Glad I kept the CD collection though, they listen to them all the time instead of bland pap...

Hathall · 09/02/2015 21:08

Hozier's take me to church song was a shock to me. It's been a long time since I heard a song that wasn't about booty, sexual acts or having tonnes of money.
It's fab.

FreudiansSlipper · 09/02/2015 21:11

i think there has been some really good music recently. ten years ago it was very much dominated by manufactured pop now at least there are some artists who write their own songs, play instruments and it is not about how good they look

NoArmaniNoPunani · 09/02/2015 21:11

I think mainstream music is better today than it was when I was a teen. I was too busy being a goth to be into mainstream music back then anyway.

SisterNancySinatra · 09/02/2015 21:16

I quite like Bruno Mars .

LonnyVonnyWilsonFrickett · 09/02/2015 21:24

Young people aren't buying music! They are consuming it through free channels and thanks to the web have access to tonnes more variety than we ever did. The people that are buying Smith and Sheeran are my mum - and I know this to be so because she requested their cd records for Christmas!

I agree, my ds was playing Sugar Hill Gang rap on his guitar and was somewhat bemused that I knew what it was. I like 60s, 70s, and 80s, 90s then it all passed me by.

Elledouble · 09/02/2015 21:29

I was thinking that this morning - just boys with guitars singing like old men. No-one's got any edge. Snooore.

OstentatiousBreastfeeder · 09/02/2015 21:30

Yeah I don't know anyone who pays for music. Grooveshark, youtube, piracy...

Last time I bought a record was when I contributed to the effort of getting Rage Against the Machine to Christmas #1 ahead of that year's X-Factor drone.

Mainstream music is better than it was ten years ago. For the most part.

tilliebob · 09/02/2015 21:32

Oi! I liked Wham...and Duran Duran....and Ultravox....

I must be ancient

Adam Ant - I still would GrinGrin

JeanSeberg · 09/02/2015 21:34

Yep. Bland as fuck.

Music for people who don't like music.

AWholeLottaNosy · 09/02/2015 21:36

I guess it's an age thing but I feel really privileged to have been a teenager in the late 70s/ early 80s. We had some fantastic music then!
Disco, The Clash, Specials, Smiths, Soft Cell, Culture Club,Michael Jackson, Madonna, George Michael, Prince... And lots more. All brilliant, original, vital, lively soulful music.

In comparison to that I do feel music today feel mass produced, cynical, cold and soulless. We wil see if it stands the test of time.

Simon Cowell. Nuff said.

My DF used to shake his head in disbelief at Adam and the Ants and Boy George.

But honestly, the day he said "I quite like that Banana song, Smells Like Teen Spirit" a little piece of me died.

EatShit

You mentioned music my kids listened to, I think I'm old enough to be your mum.
Shit, I'm old aren't I.

elQuintoConyo · 09/02/2015 21:43

Bruno Fucking Mars?

Christ on a rubber bike! He's so.... beige! If he were a house decoration he'd be twigs and pebbly shit!

DropYourSword · 09/02/2015 21:44

Kids today have more choice than ever, becuase not only do they have current music but decades of previous music to listen to! So I reckon that we don't have to crack out any nasally, average looking violins for them just yet.

Gotta say I'm a bit Hmm about the comments on a singers looks - that's got nothing to do with their singing ability. It's just kind of rude.

SignoraStronza · 09/02/2015 21:44

One of them has a soppy 'onny nonny noony noony noony nyoooo' lettuce voice?

LikeIcan · 09/02/2015 21:45

George Ezra is just brilliant, ditto Sam Smith - Ed Sheeran is a bit hit & miss for me.

notquiteruralbliss · 09/02/2015 21:56

My DCs listen to a massively wide range of music (most of it free - though they will buy music from artists they want to support). From Rhianna, and Taylor Swift to obscure indie bands and some artists that I wouldn't even know how to categorise. Dead Cat Bounce anyone?

I have happy memories of then 12 yo DD2 dragging me out to see the Stooges on the other stage at Glastonbury and her 8 yo sister giving me the slip at the Get Loaded festival on Clapham Common so she could be on the barriers for the Stooges (because she had missed them at Glastonbury).
