To shave my pets?

CatThiefKeith · 08/02/2015 10:22

I have a black Labrador, and a black cat.

My lovely cream carpets have been ruined, despite going over them at least once and usually twice a day.

The cat has taken to sleeping on dd's bed if the door is open (which it has to be as she is scared of the dark) and now her duvet is covered in black fur.

Last night the dog crept into the spare room and the lovely white bedding is also covered in black hair.

I changed all the fecking beds on Friday.

Wibu to give both of the furry bastards a number one all over?Wink

I have been pet broody for weeks. This helps. Thank you op.

Cocolepew · 08/02/2015 14:31

Do the pills etc work?

My dog sheds about a ton of hair every hour.

trufflesnout · 08/02/2015 14:33

Don't use a furminator/brush every day, you can strip out the undercoat which isn't very good for them - also has the side effect of making them go super oily and crack on with shedding/new fur production.

SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius · 08/02/2015 14:34

I have given serious consideration to either immac-ing or varnishing our dogs.

lljkk · 08/02/2015 14:58

Black sheets for my birthday last yr!!
This reminds me I need to vacuum.
I plan to shave the long hair cat around mid April & all 3 cats need lots of combing out in both April & November time to make life with them bearable.

Strokethefurrywall · 08/02/2015 15:41

Oh god I feel your pain - we have 2 shepherd mixes, both with stupid long hair which was cut when they were pups and looked like teddy bears, not so cute now that we have tumbleweeds of fur rolling about the house. Even after a clean!
We started shaving them down and live in hot country so better for them, but 6 months later it's all back. Worse thing is the poo caught in their shaggy bum hair!! We try and brush them as often as possible but with my own lustrous mane, and two kids with crazy barnets, it's enough to drive me to distraction!!

Shave them and be happier!!

QueenInTheNorth · 08/02/2015 15:49

I feel your pain! cocker spaniel and a lab x retriever! both lightly coloured, hair everywhere! On a serious note though, please, NEVER shave a labrador. Unless they have hot spots or its for a veterinary procedure, never ever shave double coated dog.

BiscuitsofYum · 08/02/2015 15:58

We rescued a beautiful Finnish laphoud once. Beautiful dog. We were told it moults twice a year, what they missed out was there was like 2 weeks in a year he didn't lose his hair!!
We would brush every day and the amount of hair that came off.. I filled up a black bin bag once and could have carried on without any real effort! The hairs got everywhere and we still find them every now and again several years and house moves after he passes on.
I do feel your pain!

CatThiefKeith · 08/02/2015 15:58

I can immac her though, right? Wink

Wood flooring and tons of rugs OP? You can take a rug outside and beat it when you are annoyed and good ones tend to shampoo well.

natureplantar101 · 08/02/2015 16:09

OP you sound ridiculous i hope this thread is just a joke because your bored or something. shaving them would render them freezing cold and you would have really short prickly hairs to vac up which would still be just as much and harder to clean up Hmm also hair spray is toxic to dogs and clingfilm would overheat them and make them ill just buy a furminator and have a groomer strip their coats down every 3 months or so.

timelord1912 · 08/02/2015 16:13

buy everything black! problem solved

Keletubbie · 08/02/2015 16:18

I just removed the sofa cushions. There is roughly another dog's worth of fur under there.

Topseyt · 08/02/2015 16:48

You can't be too house proud if you have a dog, especially a mega-moulting breed like a Labrador.

I have a yellow Labrador and a cocker spaniel. I sweep up every day (wooden floors a godsend) and still end up with shed loads of hair, which looks just like tumbleweed wafting around.

Don't use hairspray. Very toxic, and your dog is meant to moult. It is in the genes of the breed.

Weekly or twice weekly brushing should help obviously. If you want to use a furminator then do so only on an occasional basis. They can otherwise strip out far too much coat, especially the downy undercoat, causing the dog lots of problems.

I assume that you were tongue in cheek about shaving. Wink Labs should only be shaved when medically necessary at the vet, and even then it may cause problems. Mine gets clipper rash if he has to have anything done - as it starts to grow back it drives him up the wall with the itching.

purplewoofer · 08/02/2015 18:32

I feel your pain. We have a hairy x breed which is husky / malamute and the hair is everywhere even once you have vaccumed the place is still hairy. Everything I own is covered in hair. Varnishing sounds like the best option, nice and shiny!

BMW6 · 08/02/2015 20:08

Er - The OP is joking (as am I)......didn't you spot the Wink?

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 08/02/2015 20:18

No dogs here , but even the moulting of guinea-pig fur would not encourage me to buy a Skinny Guinea-Pig (they look like tiny hippos, probably bred for people with fur allergies)

When I vacuum, the roller brush gets clogged up with my DDs hair (had to cut the blardy stuff off the roller with scissors. )

averylongtimeago · 08/02/2015 20:27

We have two golden retrievers, the quantity of fur they shed has to be seen to be believed. They can fill the dyson in one day plus the general dirt, mud and addiction to rolling in Fox poo makes me wonder why anyone would ever have a dog.....

duchesse · 08/02/2015 20:37

Bloody good idea OP. Daft big dog (Bernese Mountain dog) loses a kg of fecking fur every week at this time of the year. Elderly lab loses copious quantites of tufts all the time.

Brummiegirl15 · 08/02/2015 20:37

I have two white cats. Who make a beeline for my black jeans which they can spot at 50 paces.

gits

Swapsy for a black one???

LouiseBrooks · 08/02/2015 20:37

I have a long haired (shedding like crazy) black cat and a bloody cream carpet left by the silly woman who owned the house previously. It's a nightmare so i understand your annoyance (she also vomits on it, lovely.) Get rid of the carpet. I've been waiting ages to do that (can't afford it as new kitchen is far more important)

SuburbanRhonda · 08/02/2015 20:48

Sorry, should have said don't use the Furminator every day.

But the oiliness it generates is perfect for my two cats, who both have dry skin Smile

CatThiefKeith · 08/02/2015 21:08

I've solved the problem. I've cut the feet off a newborn baby grow for the cat. (And one leg, because he is missing a limb)

And the dog is sporting a onesie with a split in the arse, just where her tail goes through. Grin

** of course I'm bloody joking!Shock

Salmotrutta · 08/02/2015 23:23

I don't believe you are joking. Hmm

I think you actually have perpetrated this crime against pets.

I bet you don't even provide a crystal water fountain for your cat Sad

CatThiefKeith · 08/02/2015 23:27

I provide a flushing drinking fountain, which is the cats favourite, plus regular bowls of water, and even a large flooded, full of green weed and slightly frozen sandpit receptacle which is the dogs favourite.

And the furry moulting bastards still ruin my carpets. Angry
