False eyelashes during the day - is this a 'thing' now

For the second weekend in a row I've been to what I've thought were casual family catch ups at home during the day and the women my age were wearing false eyelashes (early 30s), AIBU to think this is bizarre? And can someone please tell me what is the point anyway, I have to say they were caked in mascara and looked like they were putting a lot of strain on the eyelids! It makes me ranty as the mother of dds that they are constantly exposed to women who feel the need to 'enhance' their face.

I think the semi permanent ones can look really nice (because they are barely noticeable as fake) but the stick on ones can look awful. I work with someone who wears them and most of the time you can see the glue and they are hanging half off. That said, she likes them and she is a very nice person and good at her job, so none of my business!!!

I don't get it myself - too much hassle. I don't ever wear mascara even, nor do I wear any make up at all unless I absolutely have to.

I'm 40 and pretty damn ugly though and you can't polish a turd.

Actually mightymighty because your post asked why my dds were 'questioning their own looks' - they weren't, they asked a question about makeup.

When I can afford them. I get them they done at a salon. I then dress in the dark in the morning and don't have to fish around for mascara. I then have more time sleeping, less time making up in the morning, and get to work earlier in order to fight for my rights and climb the career ladder.

Hell yeah, falsies are a feminist statement.

JackShit - I think I might love you!

That's it you've converted me Yoni!

I get the semi-permanent ones done, they usually last 4-6 weeks, and they're not like dead spiders on my eyes at all; nobody knows I have them done. My natural eyelashes are very blonde like the rest of me and I despise wearing mascara as it just rubs off all the time.

I work in an infant school and would sincerely hope that the fact that I can run fast, that I'm knowledgeable about the things they learn and the fact that I have a family and a career I work hard for is a better example to them than the state of my eyelashes. If something makes a girl/woman feel better about herself and isn't a risk to her personal safety, I'm all for it.

Maybe teach your children its rude to ask people about their appearance?

Problem solved.

HappyGirlNow · 07/02/2015 16:12

your dds asked to wear nail polish as they were bought it for Christmas by the same relatives. Naturally they wanted to use it and believe it or not(!) I let them, I just didn't like the message they were given that it was superior to their own nail colour...

OP, with the greatest respect, I think you really need to get a grip..... Have you nothing real to worry about??

squizita · 07/02/2015 16:28

You want them to have fun on their terms.

But it sounds like some products you deem "OK" and others you deem fit for women who feel lowly and just want to look "pretty" (eg eyelashes and nail polish).
Those are your choices you make on your terms.
From your posts there seems to be an idea that your own cosmetic choices are ok but some other women who do other things have low self esteem.

Which doesn't quite match with wanting them to do things on their terms ... parental attitude and preference being so easily picked up.

The type of false lashes that are glued at home can look so obviously false, as though two caterpillars have set up home above someone's eyeballs. It can be a very OTT look for 9am on a Monday morning.

TentUpFirstBunkUpLater · 07/02/2015 19:18

FGS is this all you have to worry about?
