False eyelashes during the day - is this a 'thing' now

Yorkville · 07/02/2015 11:40

For the second weekend in a row I've been to what I've thought were casual family catch ups at home during the day and the women my age were wearing false eyelashes (early 30s), AIBU to think this is bizarre? And can someone please tell me what is the point anyway, I have to say they were caked in mascara and looked like they were putting a lot of strain on the eyelids! It makes me ranty as the mother of dds that they are constantly exposed to women who feel the need to 'enhance' their face.

the only time I thought false eyelashes were inappropriate is when I saw a senior nurse in ITU wearing them at work.
But then I thought about it a bit. She has to wear a uniform which is not exactly the most flattering. jewellery isn't allowed. What other way can she enhance herself other than makeup? I like a bit of makeup and if I was any good at applying fake eyelashes I probably would wear them a lot more, so why should I find it odd that she was wearing them to work?

Yorkville · 07/02/2015 12:20

Mighty - appreciate what you're saying but what if when these women are asked why they are wearing false eyelashes they give the answer 'because it makes my eyes look prettier than my normal lashes?' Is that a message we should give the younger generation? Genuinely how should that message then be dealt with?

I don't like sticking anything false on myself. Hair extensions/nails/ eyelashes or anything else. I would worry about them dropping off etc.

But I don't really care what anyone else does. Except the time my friend lost all her false toenails in the soft play ball pit.

MightyMightyToros · 07/02/2015 12:25

But the thing is they were asked that question. They obviously wear them for that reason.

I'm not sure what other kind of answer you expect from them.

Who asked the question, you or your DD's?

Nicknacky · 07/02/2015 12:26

But if it makes them feel prettier what's the problem? I wear acrylics and get my hair highlighted as I think I look nicer. Why is that a bad thing?

So op, you don't wear make up, get your hair done or wear clothes that make the best of your figure? If you do, then you are doing the same thing as the eyelash wearing women.

WeAreEternal · 07/02/2015 12:26

I have friends and colleagues that wear false lashes most days.
There are different styles, 'natural' looking ones are commonly used for day wear and 'glamorous' longer and thicker ones are more often saved for evenings out.

I am lucky that I have naturally great lashes (and really good mascara) so I don't feel the need for them.

Sparklingbrook · 07/02/2015 12:27

It's hard to portray the natural daytime look when you can tell something is glued on possibly.

areyoubeingserviced · 07/02/2015 12:30

I have a friend who has lost most of her hair through illness. So when someone asks her why she wears eyelashes her answer would probably be 'because it makes me prettier '

Women wear makeup because it makes them feel better and 'pretty'.

dontaskforthe99 · 07/02/2015 12:30

I've just about lost all my eyelashes to chemo. Fake ones look like the way to go (day and might) but not sure what to buy yet.....didn't think it would bring out such passionate responses as on this thread or that I would be seen as a bad influence, better get on with choosing some.

Yorkville · 07/02/2015 12:33

Yes my dds have asked the question, recently they asked it about nail polish, then the next day they asked me if they could put nail polish on so they could 'look beautiful' Hmm and I do wear makeup sometimes, if my dds ask I say it's something adults do sometimes to make them feel good, it's v hard to find the correct answer. Sparkling I guess part of the problem is how fake they look - they are literally stuck together almost like a block.

What a fuss about nothing.

What if you ask these women why they wear make up? they would probably say they feel it enhances their appearance and they simply enjoy it.

My daughter loves watching me put make up on and sometimes when we aren't going out she asks if she can have some on so I might put some lipstick on her. I don't see the big deal. Both sexes often enhance their appearance, be it a nice haircut, shaving facial hair or wearing nice clothes. BTW I am not saying that those who don't do those things don't look as good, I am sure they do, but for me I look much better with make up on and I like looking the best I can look. I simply don't feel as attractive when my acne is red and my bags under my eyes look heavy so I choose to wear make up that helps cover it up.

I have no concerns about what message that is sending my children, no more than my husband is concerned about what message it sends our children when he does certain things to enhance his appearance.

I don't wear false eyelashes but quite interested in trying them. And I certainly won't worry about what message I am sending to the younger generation.

GlitzAndGigglesx · 07/02/2015 12:35

I love fake lashes and would wear them during the day if I had the time and patience to put them on. I really don't see the problem Hmm

StillStayingClassySanDiego · 07/02/2015 12:36

but what if when these women are asked why they are wearing false eyelashes

I imagine they might reply ' because I like them' Wink and having the right to wear what they want, when they want?

Nicknacky · 07/02/2015 12:36

But op, that is the right answer. That's generally why most of us do wear make up. Self confidence, possible improves your looks. Don't get too bogged down in this and read more into it!

Yorkville · 07/02/2015 12:36

I think a lot of it comes down to the way they are worn, i.e looking overly fake and then the message that they look 'pretty'. Appreciate they can look really good when applied properly aka Michella Obama!

dontask
Have a look at eyelure.com
You can look at lashes by style and there's a "naturals" section.

I really like eyelure. I used to wear mac lashes at 3 x the price and I've found eyelure to be better.

Yorkville · 07/02/2015 12:37

Nicknacky any suggested reading? Thanks Smile

Sparklingbrook · 07/02/2015 12:39

I think it sounds like something best done by an expert at a salon, with a lesson in how you can do it and it look like they are natural York. I am not sure buying off the shelf and attaching can be a good look.

I remember my Mum had some in the 70s and I was intrigued with them, they lived in a little plastic box.

I only have teen DSs so haven't given make up for the younger generation much of a thought. If i had teen girls I would be more knowledgeable possibly?

StillStayingClassySanDiego · 07/02/2015 12:39

If they like the 'overly fake' look so be it.

Your tone now appears to be criticism of how badly applied you think the lashes are rather than the actual use of false lashes.

WD41 · 07/02/2015 12:40

It's not a thing amongst my friends, day or night.

I get what you mean OP about what your DD is exposed to. I don't like shaving or putting make up in front of my 3yo, because I think I'm just indoctrinating her from a young age that women need to modify themselves.

False eyelashes in themselves may not be a problem but it's when you add them to the make up, the nails, the hair, the fake tan, the removal of body hair, the uncomfortable shoes...all things men don't have to worry about

Choice? Pah. Great fucking choice isn't it choosing to spend our time and money on all this stuff. Men don't.

MightyMightyToros · 07/02/2015 12:42

Yes my dds have asked the question, recently they asked it about nail polish, then the next day they asked me if they could put nail polish on so they could 'look beautiful'

But most children would be attracted to or interested in nail polish because it's colourful.

I think a lot of it comes down to the way they are worn, i.e looking overly fake and then the message that they look 'pretty'. Appreciate they can look really good when applied properly aka Michella Obama!

I don't wear fake eyelashes, but I do wear makeup and I wear it for me. I shouldn't have to worry about what message that gives out to anyone else.

My job as a parent is let my daughter understand her self worth and that regardless of what others people do she is beautiful and intelligent and that she has the freedom to wear makeup if she wants to.

If your dd's are questioning their own looks because they asked their relative why they wear fake eyelashes then ....

MrsBungle · 07/02/2015 12:44

The applying of lashes absolutely does not need to be done by an expert in a salon. If you want to wear them regularly it just takes a bit of practice until you get it right.

Yorkville · 07/02/2015 12:45

Yes I guess you're right stillstaying, I think it's that they look very fake and obvious and that in this case a more natural look would be so much better - be that well applied extensions or mascara. It's just another part of our bodies that I'm concerned it's soon going to become the norm to over enhance!

OP posts:
Sparklingbrook · 07/02/2015 12:47

I think I would still want to be shown MrsB.

Sparklingbrook · 07/02/2015 12:47

I get my eyebrows threaded & tinted, so I guess that's a fakery of sorts....
