To think that as I've spent the whole day listening to Radio 2...

I am now officially old?
Radio 4: hints at thoughtful, responsible intelligence.
Radio 1: means you're down with the kids - hanging on there.
Radio 3: dunno, tried it by mistake a few times and it got on my nerves.
Radio 2: I tuned in to Graham Norton last Saturday and found I enjoyed it. Been on all day... that means I've turned a corner into my dotage right?

yes you are Grin

love Graham Norton, Chris Evans and Sara Cox

and was good to hear Jonathan Ross last week i am hoping he comes back to radio 2 he is much funnier on the radio

i am still not old enough for Ken Bruce just yet, i like when Claudia Winkleman or Sara Cox sits in for him.

I have friends who insist they still love listening to Kiss all day mmmmm

vienna1981 · 06/02/2015 17:45

Radio 1 means you're not old enough to know better.

Radio 2 isn't as good as it was. Avoid certain programmes and/or presenters.

Radio 3 is only good late Saturday afternoon if you like jazz.

Radio 4. The ultimate Home Counties station. Fine for Woman's Hour, You and Yours and general background chatter to kill the silence.

helpmekeepstrong · 06/02/2015 17:45

I think I know who Ken Bruce is and I agree.... old style R2 right?
Had no idea I could hear Claudia - l heart her!
(high fives the dog and lols so as not to seem too elderly)

Not that I get much time at the moment for listening to the radio, but of any of those I would probably pick Radio 2, or occasionally Radio 4 if I feel like being particularly intellectual.

I was an avid Radio 1 listener in my youth. I remember the weekly chart countdown with Paul Burnett (if I remember rightly) when the new weekly chart was published at lunchtime on Tuesdays. Radios were banned in school, but that didn't stop us sneaking small transistor ones in and disappearing to the end of the school field at the end of lunchtime to hear what the latest number 1 was.

Many of the former DJs from there did migrate to Radio 2 for some time, and to other places.

I identify unashamedly with Radio 2 much more now (I'm 48). I would never have admitted to that as a teenager.

Ilovereadingbooks · 06/02/2015 17:54

I like popmaster with Ken bruce, but not the rest of it! Love graham norton saturday mornings. I prefer listening to him than his chat show! Had a friend who said i was old for preferring radio2 - gave radio one a try and wasnt keen at all, so must be officially old! Dermot isnt too bad either, i think celebs seem better on radio than on tv.. ( apart from Richard Madeley, he is just annoying...!)

DeliciousMonster · 06/02/2015 17:54

Forget all that nonsense.

6 music is for us oldies.

Nanny0gg · 06/02/2015 17:56

I think I know who Ken Bruce is and I agree.... old style R2 right?

No. That would have been the late David Jacobs.

And he is much much better than the dire Steve Wright.

ClaraDeLaNoche · 06/02/2015 18:04

Yes Steve Wright needs to go! And must be replaced by a woman. Coxy or Winkleman.

iwouldgoouttonight · 06/02/2015 18:14

I miss radio 2, we used to have it on all day in my old job but there doesn't appear to be a radio in my new work. I agree, love Graham Norton (and Maria), Chris Evans, Sara Cox and Claudia. I like Popmaster but not so keen on the rest of Ken Bruce. Can't stand Steve Wright. Quite like Simon Mayo too.

I feel radio 2 and 6 music are just right for me now, but I spent a long time feeling as though I was too old for radio 1 and not old enough for radio 2.

vienna1981 · 06/02/2015 18:19

I am 44. In about forty minutes I shall be listening to Desmond Carrington on Radio 2. He tends to prattle on but to be fair, usually, plays a few decent records.

Radio 3 tomorrow if there's any jazz on. BBC Radio Leeds a bit later for the Northern Soul Smile .

DownAtFraggleRock · 06/02/2015 18:21

DH and I were laughing about being old the other day due to our change from R1 to R2

6 music is good, yep.

I live abroad but we only listen to UK radio at home as the radio here is dire

Babycham1979 · 06/02/2015 18:24

Vienna, if you like your Northern Soul, I'd definitely recommend Craig Charles every Saturday at 6pm on 6 Music. And if you like you jazz a little left-field and cool, Gilles Peterson from 3pm beforehand is always sublime!

helpmekeepstrong · 06/02/2015 18:24

Today was my first day with R2 and I must say I'm quite looking forward to hearing more.... apart from Abba and Grease.... but then there was Led Zep and Elvis Costello too so.... rough with smooth and all that. Ex-h used to make me turn off R4 he said it made me seem cleverer than he old. I remember Steve Wright from local radio years ago. He doesn't sound any different. Still an arse, then.

Hypotenuse · 06/02/2015 18:24

I love radio 2 and I have for years, loved Wogan in the morning and Chris Evans now. I'm mid twenties. Clearly says something about me.

Fricking hate that daily mail spewing nonsense in the afternoon though!

MaxPepsi · 06/02/2015 18:29

I'm 40 this year and have been listening to R2 since my twenties out of choice, forever thanks to mum
I do have to switch off certain presenters though, Steve Wrong and Jeremy Vain I'm looking at you!!!

CQ · 06/02/2015 18:31

God yes, I had to turn Jeremy Vine off today. Quite an interesting economist putting forward the notion that the welfare state is there for everyone, and everyone uses it at some point to a surprisingly equal average amount.

Inundated with self righteous twunts spitting about working all their lives, paying private school fees for DCS, private health care bla bla bla. Couldn't get their heads round the fact of all the govt tax breaks they've had on their pension contributions, the years of govt pension they will claim into their healthy old age, or if not, the thousands of £s of NHS care they'll get.

Why oh why did the researcher let these bollox on the air.

I was shouting at the radio.

Which means I'm old.

vienna1981 · 06/02/2015 18:31

Thanks Babycham. The Craig Charles programme would clash with the Radio Leeds offering but thankyou all the same. Similarly I listen to Pick of The Pops on Saturday afternoon on R2. Only for the music, mind. I can't bear Bony Tackbum's inane nonsenseAngry .

Titsalinabumsquash · 06/02/2015 18:34

I'm sticking with radio one and you can't make me switch! GrinBlush

MimiAndPops · 06/02/2015 18:35

I'm 24 and I identify much more with radio 2 than radio 1. Old before my time.

redexpat · 06/02/2015 18:36

cant stand the jeremy vile show, but yes interesting progs on r2. Also 6 music.

helpmekeepstrong · 06/02/2015 18:50

I heard the Vine show today -nearly got up to turn it off - what a lot of very cross people. Quite spoiled my cup of Darjeeling and slice of Dundee cake. I shan't let that spoil my future enjoyment, however. (Rustles Daily Mail in irritation.)

OP posts:
vienna1981 · 06/02/2015 18:53

Jeremy Vine isn't a patch on Jimmy Young but then he was a legend of an act to followSmile . JV has morons phoning in (editorial problem), can't control said morons when they start squabbling and frequently interrupts his studio guests. Abrasive manner as well. Come back JY !

helpmekeepstrong · 06/02/2015 18:53

(Gosh this is a nice Wine) R2 still going! No telly d'you see. Forced to listen rather than gaze and snooze. (Norah! Gaze and snooze? am getting on, then)

OP posts:
Sparklingbrook · 06/02/2015 18:59

I am a little bit in love with Greg James and howl with laughter at Scott Mills and Innuendo Bingo. I even quite like Fearne Cotton and the Live Lounge. Shock
I miss Chris Moyles every single morning because Grimmers is a massive knob. Sad

I am so not R1's target audience though.

PolaDeVeboise · 06/02/2015 19:12

LOVE R2, listen to it all day, from CE on my way into work, to SM on the way home. I am, however, bang slap in the middle of their target demographic. Just for the record, though, I absolutely DETEST Steve Wright. Coxy would be perfect in that slot.
