No, to be sitting at a desk all day surfing and occasionally sending emails and doing the odd bit of powerpoint would be simply luxurious

I'm a SAHM and frankly this is pretty close to my life :-)

What is a luxury is having the choice whether to work to stay at home. Freedom to decide how you spend your time whether it's working or childcare or being a house wife is wonderful. It's also nice for children to enjoy a good quality of life.

Different families make different choices.

I think it can be a luxury, depending on whether it is by choice or necessity. I definitely think for the working parent, having a SAHP is a luxury though. DH recently had a couple of months off work, while I was still working. It amazed me what a difference it made to my life. No worries if I was going to be late off work, far less housework to do, dinner cooked when I came home. If we could afford it I would love for him to give up work permanently!

Gone -I totally agree with you that it's a luxury for the working parent. Most of my friends who work say it would be nice to have a SAHP. As you say, no childcare issues, housework largely done, few night wakings etc My OH usually has very little to do by way of housework, cooking, shopping for birthdays etc and never has that sinking feeling when ds gets a snotty nose or a temperature. A couple we know who both work in really quite inflexible jobs and no family nearby have a total nightmare when their kids get ill.
