Would love to know the answer...

Normanpriceisnotarolemodel · 30/01/2015 22:11

I'm the same, but on the implant.

LordEmsworth · 30/01/2015 22:27

Your GP can prescribe something. I had the implant and ended up with nearly constant bleeding, I had norethisterone as a temporary "stop it so I can have an examination". And then had the pill prescribed for 2 months so I could go on hols without bleeding. The pill took longer to have the effect, the norethisterone stopped the bleeding within about 24 hours.

Though if you're constantly bleeding then presumably you want to talk to your doctor about changing anyway. I had to wait to get the implant out, hence the temporary measures...

PacificDogwood · 30/01/2015 22:33

You can have a smear done when you have a bit of spotting. Or even full on bleeding - it does make the 'view' more difficult to obtain but the actual cells that are required for cytology can still be harvested.

Or, yes, you could get some norethisterone for a few days to stop the bleeding.
Don't let a bit of bastard bleeding stop you from having your smear.

Fresh01 · 30/01/2015 22:37

How long since Mirena was put in? I had spotting for the first few months then it stopped. Now 3 years later.

You can call you GP and ask for a 3 month wait. I got a letter about a smear the day after I got home from hospital having had DC4. I phoned the receptionist and told her DC4 had just arrived and could the smear wait! She said she'd send me another letter in 3 months.

velvetspoon · 30/01/2015 22:41

You have my sympathy, I'm in the same boat, only its the depo injection which is causing mine. Had a course of norethisterone after practically begging for it, GP never volunteered it, but it only stops bleeding for 7 days, and the nurse at my practice (GPs wont do smears) has a 2 week wait for appts.

Every time I go to my GP they point out my smear is overdue. But that while I'm bleeding I can't have it done. Which is super helpful Hmm

Could be worse, my friend's smear is even more overdue than mine, they've refused her anything other than the pill which doesn't work and tranexamic acid which just reduces the flow and stops her flooding everywhere.

velvetspoon · 30/01/2015 22:43

My smears now a year overdue, friends is about 3 years.

fedupandfeelingold · 30/01/2015 23:01

Well I made an appointment and apparently I need a scan as i am over 40
In am 17 years overdue
And I have to go in a month to a clinic 40 minutes away from home

a2011x · 01/02/2015 09:24

The clinic I work in offers walk in appointments for this exact issue. So when your not bleeding or bleeding slightly you can attend the walk in instead of booking and hoping , either that or ask to go on the combined pill along side but you have to be suitable with a BMI of under 30 with no strokes breast cancer etc

Davegrohlsgirl · 01/02/2015 09:30

Im the same.....on depo, spottting during last cylcel for 4 weeks, this cycle they gave me the injection 1 week early so as to avoid spotting. Was about to book my overdue smear test for this week but started bleeding again yesterday.
TBH its not much, and the depo has solved my hugely long, hugely heavy, hugely painful periods BUT I cant have my smear test!!!

PacificDogwood · 01/02/2015 09:32

You can have a smear done while bleeding. You can.

If constant spotting/bleeding bothers you (understandably) then get that addressed, but don't let it stop you from having a smear.

ArgyMargy · 01/02/2015 09:37

When do you stop getting invited for smears? I can't remember my last one at all...

OurMiracle1106 · 01/02/2015 09:38

Please please do go and have your smear. I had my first one at 25, as advised and it came back with abnormal cells which needed treatment. I now have borderline changes and am back to the hospital in just over a month to be checked again

Older · 01/02/2015 09:41

Maybe you haven mother thread and this has been discussed but perhaps the bastard Mirena needs to come out?

I speak as someone who got pregnant and had constant bleeding with the bastard thing

velvetspoon · 01/02/2015 10:28

Pacific, i hear what you say however both GP and nurse at my surgery have been quite clear that I CAN'T have a smear while I'm bleeding...

itsmeitscathy · 01/02/2015 10:30

They've changed the test now so can still see with some spotting

PacificDogwood · 01/02/2015 10:31

Well, they should not be that categorical in that statement.

Yes, if a woman is flooding it can be difficult to get the view you need, but a bit of spotting/light bleeding is really not a problem. If there is blood/mucus lying in front of the cervix this can be swabbed away and the smear taken anyway.
The brushy thing that is used to collect cells from inside the cervix will not mind Grin

CameliousHumph · 01/02/2015 10:34

That's helpful to know pacific. I'll ring tomorrow.

Will call the surgery tomorrow and make an appt Smile
