there should be more help for people that need gluten free foods

I have celiac disease so I can't have bread, cakes or pasta. The cost of the free from foods is sometimes 500% more! I get a free prescription for bread and pasta but sometimes I fancy a cake or something. Just looked at some small cakes, similar size but the normal one was 50p the free from was 2.49!

Aibu to think we should get more help with these?

I've got coeliac and we still have to pay for those prescriptions like everyone else, so they are not free of charge, just subsidized like the rest. You can get a pre payment certificate, it will work out cheaper.

However, the best part of having coeliac is that you are slim, not because you are on a diet, but because of the price/ difficulty to get sweet (or savoury for that matter) treats. They are treats. Best biscuits are from marks and spencer. A box lasts me for ages as I eat 1 biscuit a week. That's what they are: treats (and they are not cheap).

I am going to share this recipe with you because is easy and you get lovely moist cake with it, not like the disgusting dry overpriced cake we are supposed to be grateful for in lots of shops:

I have tried many recipes but I always go back to this one:

After you have finished baking, wait until it cools down and freeze half the cake or whatever it is that you won't eat, so it lasts more and also, you won't be tempted to finish the whole thing.

Good luck OP

Sorry, shitty link:

fragola · 31/01/2015 00:25

I can't believe that free prescriptions are available for gluten free bread, when they're not available for asthma medication! Bread is a choice, breathing is not!

EugenedeRastignac · 31/01/2015 00:28

fragola Let them eat cake.

Discopanda · 31/01/2015 00:40

Dammit I want a prescription for cake!

EugenedeRastignac · 31/01/2015 00:47

MoreBeta Coeliac is not a form of gluten intolerance. It's an autoimmune disease. Unlike some types of diabetes or smoker's lung cancer, it is not something we brought upon ourselves. If you are not able to keep a gluten free diet for financial reasons (I know, unheard of in MN land), some of the consequences are dying of bowel cancer, lack of calcium leading to osteoporosis, unexplain infertility, etc.

cestlavielife · 31/01/2015 00:47

Nigella s lemon pokenta. Cake is easy. www.nigella.com/recipes/view/LEMON-POLENTA-CAKE-5308

You not need cake on prescription.
Make your own.
Look out for three for two in tesco sainsburys etc on free from

Eat lots of rice and potatoes

EugenedeRastignac · 31/01/2015 00:48

unexplained infertility.

Discopanda · 31/01/2015 00:50

There's a LOT of gluten free blogs out there nowadays as well. Also, if you use Quidco, you can buy GF food on Amazon and get cash back!

BankWadger · 31/01/2015 00:52

It's not easy being dairy free. No one gives me or my child calcium supplements free, let alone food prescriptions. But somehow we manage even In the cake front.

EugenedeRastignac · 31/01/2015 00:57

BankWadger There is more choice if you are 'only' dairy free. Most coeliacs are also lactose intolerant. So I know getting the cheapest soya milk from asda is not as expensive as a loaf of gluten free bread.

Also, gluten is in a lot of foods you wouldn't normally think it would be present and this prevents us from eating the cheapest things, even the non brand el cheapo 'rice' cereals.

HicDraconis · 31/01/2015 06:36

But a gluten free diet isn't expensive. Unless you want to buy predominantly processed "free from" things.

I'm allergic to peanuts. I don't even get an adrenaline pen funded. Eating peanuts - like cake, like bread, like pasta - is a choice. I choose to avoid those foods which may inadvertently kill me.

It's not difficult to avoid gluten (and dairy). It may mean you get amazingly good at scanning the ingredients lists in tiny print. It doesn't have to be expensive either.

(Gluten wheat nut and dairy free household - it stops family members from being seriously ill).

The prescriptions aren't free. You still have to pay for them.

MinceSpy · 31/01/2015 08:23

OP seems to start a thread to goad people then doesn't come back

BankWadger · 31/01/2015 09:12

EugenedeRastignac
Okay fair call, but my child is also soya free, so cheap soya milk isn't an option and soya and surprisingly milk is in a lot of things you wouldn't expect (especially soya). So okay I can bake with cheap standard flour, but I can't buy most cheap bread because it's full of soy flour.

ToBeeOrNot · 31/01/2015 09:21

I qualify for free prescriptions and am coeliac but still don't bother getting anything prescribed.

There is a lot more choice in the supermarket these days, I manage to find gluten free stuff reduced every week, e.g. 35p for genius rolls, and stick it in the freezer.

Ikea Almond Krokant cake is a great choice if you want a bought gf cake btw.

trixymalixy · 31/01/2015 10:42

Dairy and soya free is really hard, it was almost imposdible to buy bread that DS could eat so I bought a bread maker.

Desserts were really difficult too, there's more choice now with coconut yoghurts, but a few years ago there was no choice at all and nothing available on prescription.

Thankfully DS grew out of the soya allergy, but it was definitely the hardest to cope with. The nuts, legumes, dairy and sesame allergies are much easier to cope with!

EugenedeRastignac · 31/01/2015 11:26

Hic Gluten free is always more expensive. Think of the cheapest student food: noodles, cheap bread, cheap pasta. Using rice is more expensive, potatoes go off and they are not nice after reheating if you freeze them. Maybe the price difference it's not so much for you, but when people really have to count the pennies, it's a massive difference.

Also, the gluten free prescription are NOT free of charge, we have to pay like everyone else.

SoonToBeSix · 31/01/2015 11:38

Yabu most people have to pay for bread and pasta. I think yours should be reduced to the price of regular bread not free. Like pp said you can even get free flour to make your own cake.

dhdjdbrjrkbr · 31/01/2015 11:45

No wonder the NHS is skint if its buying people pizza bases and biscuits for a very common intolerance.

Most people on gf are just doing it as an attention seeking fad.

Mrsjayy · 31/01/2015 11:50

I got dds friend who has celiac 2 chocolate muffins for dds party for £1.99ish from waitrose thats 98p a cake hardly 500% yabu people manage without prescription cake

EugenedeRastignac · 31/01/2015 11:56

dhdjdbrjrkbr If you don't know what coeliac disease is, do not write about it. It is NOT an intolerance and while there are lots of people who have a gf diet because they think they are going to lose weight eating gluten free products (that's not true btw), the NHS only deals with people who have diagnosed with coeliac disease.

Mrsjayy · 31/01/2015 12:12

Celiac disease just doesn't give you a bloated tummy and a bit of wind dhd maybe you should read up on it and getting prescription bread isn't new or faddy

dhdjdbrjrkbr · 31/01/2015 12:21

I said gf people not CD people! I know many people who claim to be GI and make a big fuss about it, but still eata normal pizza when they fancy it.

You can live without bread, gf bread often has lots of nastys in it anyway.
