I have celiac disease so I can't have bread, cakes or pasta. The cost of the free from foods is sometimes 500% more! I get a free prescription for bread and pasta but sometimes I fancy a cake or something. Just looked at some small cakes, similar size but the normal one was 50p the free from was 2.49!

Aibu to think we should get more help with these?

What???!!! You get a prescription for bread and pasta?!?! I'm sorry you can't eat gluten. But you will live without both of those items!!

I have a severe life threatening nut allergy, nut free chocolate, Easter eggs, cakes ect are expensive. I don't expect them for free, its unfortunate, but there's people with disabilities who have to spend money on carers and mobility aids and the like, it's unfortunate that some people haveto pay more for what they need, but it's life. Life is not fair.

Why would you spend £8.20 something on a prescription for food that costs less than that??!!! Lemme guess you don't pay for it. So every body else should pay for it??

Get baking lady.

Mrs Crimbles macaroons are gluten free, taste amazing and quite cheap - £1-£1.50 for a pack of six.

Agree that prescription food for gluten free is not really necessary and harks back to a time where such foods were much more expensive and not as widely available. Now there is a wide selection in most supermarkets and they aren't really that much more than normal versions.

Plus the fact that no-one needs a lot of bread, cake etc. Just eat naturally gluten free food like rice, veg, cheese instead.

I have multiple life threatening allergies. You can adapt, you won't starve.

It does seem unfair that the NHS is not allowing them a little bit of cake

Have a Biscuit instead.

Zombie thread, but this is picking up on the threatened discontinuation of prescription GF foods.

I think it's fair enough. Being available on prescription stems back to the days when supermarkets didn't have substantial Freefrom sections. Even everyday sausages, stuffings etc are often now gluten free (though a lot of sausages have been completely ruined by using pea fibre, which turns them into something a bit like Crocs in texture - yuck! Waitrose 1 chipolatas manage a nicer texture using rice and corn flour as a binder - they retain that stickiness that makes a good sausage good)
