MS & Parkinsons sufferers to have their benefits slashed

More than a third of people with degenerative conditions such as Parkinson’s and multiple sclerosis are having their benefits slashed because the Department for Work and Pensions deems they will recover enough to look for work

Thousands of those with diseases that only worsen with time - and who have become too ill to work - are being denied full Employment Support Allowance. Instead they are assessed as suitable for work-related activity which is designed for people likely to recover to the point where they can seek employment

People in The Work-Related Activity Group receive less money and the threat of sanctions if they do not attend regular sessions. Many also have this benefit removed after a year as an added “incentive” to find employment Sad Angry

Why? Just why would you do that? And why would someone vote for the party that supports this action? I don't understand!

I totally agree. It's barbaric.

AntiHop · 28/01/2015 21:06

It's horrific and inhumane. Why does the dwp not understand the words degenerative and incurable?

ghostyslovesheep · 28/01/2015 21:07

no YANBU at all

Iggly · 28/01/2015 21:10

Where are the Tory supporters to defend these policies?

WoodliceCollection · 28/01/2015 21:13

YANBU in any way. 'Compassionate' conservatism my giant shiny arse.

Justanotherlurker · 28/01/2015 21:16

It's an unspeakable cycle of abuse against the most vunerable, Unfortunetly it was started by labour, so I don't see a way out.

LuisSuarezTeeth · 28/01/2015 21:18

Um, this article is from last year, ATOS no longer has the contract I think.

bettyboop1970 · 28/01/2015 21:25

YANBU. I hate the bloody lot of them! (Tories)

HeeHiles · 28/01/2015 21:28

I didn't look at the date - it came up on my Twitter feed tonight Sad Don't suppose it has changed since October?

I just don't understand how anyone could do this? I know a family devastated by Parkinson's - sufferers really shouldn't be penalised this way. It's so so sad - I'm just sitting here wondering Why? Just why? when there are so many other ways of saving money.

He is a dickhead.

YouTheCat · 28/01/2015 21:39

I'm currently awaiting a decision about my ds's ESA as he has severe autism. So far, including them getting the address wrong 3 times and losing documents, this has taken 3 and a half months.

I had a text from job centre plus who handle these things to tell me his forms had been passed to ATOS so it would seem they are still handling this.

bettyboop1970 · 28/01/2015 21:55

YouTheCat - that is completely unacceptable. The whole system has been completely fucked up by IDS and his ilk. All the changes have cost billions, not to mention lives. I have nothing but contempt for them. I wish you and DS all the bestFlowers

YouTheCat · 28/01/2015 23:08

Thanks, Betty.

I'd love to see them try to interview him to determine his capability to work, given that he is completely non-verbal and requires 2:1 care.

RandomNPC · 28/01/2015 23:09

I hope he falls under a bus, the bastard.

PoppyField · 28/01/2015 23:11

He is a dimwit of the highest order. Would not put him in charge of a whelk stall, let alone the department with the biggest budget.

Dowser · 28/01/2015 23:12

Maximus is the name of the company taking over from ATOS.

Whatever!

HeeHiles · 28/01/2015 23:51

YouTheCat I hope your son gets the correct decision and you both can carry on with your lives without all this added stress Flowers
