to think that 43 Tesco stores closing is a bad sign...

43! It's so many...Tesco have long been such a household name...why is this happening?

I always shop there and have no problems at all and yes...I've tried Aldi and Asda...can't afford Sainsbury's or Waitrose...Morrisons don't have the range.

Is the country in such a bad way?

Thought it was just the tesco express ones that were closing?

They expanded too quickly with dodgy figures so it's not surprising that at least some will close

It's some from each of their stores, so some express, some metro etc

It's desirable. Rents are too high if even tesco can't make the figures work.

Hopefully the prices will drop and independant retailers will move back in.

Tesco express stores need to make a mint but corner shops run by a family with accommodation above need to make less

They are closing because Tesco overstretched itself and in light of its financial 'irregularities' can't continue with the status quo. It doesn't mean that the country is going downhill - just that one company screwed up and finally someone in charge has realised they can't keep unprofitable stores open in the hope that the local competition will be killed off enough to make them profitable

So, instead, there will be a contraction in the business, and when it is more stable they may think about expansion again.

I think its more that Tescos over stretched them selves

I like Tescos but they are everywhere, they built a big store in a really stupid place in our local town, i still havent been in it as I'm boycotting it Grin

There is another one less than five miles away I use more often

Well its a bad sign for Tesco thats true.

Tesco are in financial turmoil - its not necessarily a sign of the country in trouble. They've lost a lot of customers to places like ALdi and Lidl and have shot themselves in the foot with their bookkeeping shenanigans.

Not nice for those made redundant though.

The one closing near me is one of several in a small area. It's also in a shopping center that's filled with pound shops and mobile phone stalls.

The shopping centre is dying, as apparently is most of the customer base as the last time I was there a funeral directors had a stall in the mall and was approaching people who looked elderly and asking if they had a funeral plan in place Shock

I'd go out of my way not to go there so closing the Tesco seems reasonable.

Just announced this morning that our local Tesco is to close 4th April with the loss of 189 jobs. Not a shop I use that often (Asda is closer with free parking and Sainsbury within walking/spitting distance) but that's a lot of jobs to be lost.

We noticed yesterday in our superstore Tescos that they hadn't any offers on their goods. Everything seemed to be priced at the top of the scale. No yellow shelf-labels at all. Their vegetables, pet food and many other items have gone up. Also we haven't had any Clubcard coupons arrive for months.
We decided they're desperately trying to recoup some money.

Growth in UK is at one of the highest rates in Europe at the moment, so it can't be that.

I feel very sorry for the workers in the stores that will close.
We're condemned to shop there as distance-wise other stores are a bit too far, but with petrol going down, we may make it to a large Asda, which is much cheaper!

You must be near me Growl3th. Hopefully now that Tesco is closing it will be the death knell for that godawful centre it's in and they can demolish it, fecking eyesore that it is.

2,000 jobs gone will be painful.

But, Tesco had a terrible year. The horsemeat scandal lowered consumer confidence, they didn't really try to compete with Aldi/Asda/LIDL etc, and then their book-keeping was rubbish and it seems that they'd been making up the figures. It's probably been the case for quite some time that the random stores they shoved in just about anywhere weren't profitable.

There are three within 10 miles of me, and I live in a small village. Nobody uses them, either, because there is a big Sainsbury's that is posher and has more selection, and everyone goes there.

They've fucked up. Over expansion there is 13 tesco stores in my town, including two massive extra stores and 11 local stores.

They lied with their figures, really lied with them. Many people lost confidence with tesco with this.

The quality and range of their products are not good for the price, at all. I can get better quality and cheaper at asda, sainsbury's and although not the range better quality at aldi/Lidl.

They got too cocky, people shop around now, unless I was desperate I wouldn't go to tesco.

It's sad for the workers but perhaps people just don't want what Tesco offer anymore. Pretend special offers based on comedically high made up prices, expensive in general, massive stores, shit quality a lot of the time, terrible treatment of suppliers. I buy hardly anything in Tesco and can't see why anyone would unless they had no other choice.

It's good in a way too, because a lot of the land that Tesco has been holding onto for years so that other supermarkets can't use it is now being sold off and they will be developed by the likes of M&S, Waitrose, Aldi and Lidl instead of remaining derelict.

And it finally means that our side of my city will probably get a Lidl this year or next, because there are at least 3 such sites that I know of.

I know a lot of people on MN don't like Tesco,I work in one of their rivals but I just think right now with all the benefit cuts waits and sanctions its a shitty time to lose your job or be unemployed.

Tescos are/were building in my town. Only now they aren't, they have decided not to open. Pretty sad about it :(

43 must be less than 1% of their stores? Obviously awful for people who have lost jobs but I wouldn't assume that the company is in trouble over that.

We have three big stores around our town and some express ones too. One of the express ones is closing. I figured it would because a huge ASDA opened a couple of years ago across the street. I usually shop there and am very grateful for the money of my diesel (last time 6p off).

They still have a market share of 28.8%... still a monopoly. Still the biggest supermarket in Britain. Can't feel sorry for them for falling sales, I'm sure they'll cope... their poor shareholders and all that. I wonder how the CEO and directors are going to afford food or rent?! Wink Capitalism eh?
I feel sorry for all the people that are going to be losing their jobs, because Tesco is a greedy and incompetent multinational.

It's sad for the workers but there is an oversupply. There are seven branches of Sainsburys within a 10 minute walk of my house. Admittedly we're densely populated round here but that's bloody ridiculous.

I feel bad for the employees getting made redundant - I know what it's like and have just got a new job myself after being made redundant 6 months ago. Tesco have brought it on themselves though by expanding too much too soon.

I travel 20 minutes on a bus every week to go to Aldi or Lidl for my main shop and I live across the road from a huge 24 hour Tesco but I find the prices have got higher and the range has got smaller. I get much more for my money at Aldi or Lidl than I do at Tesco, whats the saying - every little helps!
