To think the Green Party are just making themselves look ridiculous?

They really seemed to be gaining support...

But this new 'we will evict the queen from Buckingham palace and put her into a council house' just makes them sound stupid?

I've seen Green Party supporters on facebook sharing this post with excitement and glee but... Really?

DodgedAnAsbo · 29/01/2015 08:50

that's nice ,Trice.

just don't set up a world heritage site in your back garden or you will be overrun by greenpeace activists

HeeHiles · 29/01/2015 10:32

desecrated the Nazca lines in Peru

FFS They unfurled a banner!! Hardly a desecration??

HeeHiles · 29/01/2015 10:32

NHS - Tory's are desecrating that!!

DodgedAnAsbo · 29/01/2015 10:54

trampled over and unfurled a banner on a sacred site. If they did that on my mums grave I would be a bit aggrieved

SolomanDaisy · 29/01/2015 11:18

Umm, the nazca lines aren't graves. Nor are they sacred.

WhistlingPot · 29/01/2015 11:19

Did the Green Party think Nazca was a great idea?

Here's some more things for your interest though DodgedAnAsbo, from the horse's mouth:

We are now 50,000 strong! Bigger than UKIP and the LibDems by good margin and still expanding. We’ve won the battle to appear in the TV leaders’ debates, but the most telling sign that we have become a serious political force and a threat to the status quo can be seen by the way the establishment media have begun an all-out assault upon us.

No, we don’t have policies to put the Queen in a council house, to support terrorist organisations, or to enact an open door immigration policy over the next few years. We can expect smears like these and much worse to feature in the coming months as they attempt to put a lid on the unprecedented #GreenSurge.

But we won’t be stopped as we gear up for the coming elections with thousands of new members mobilising for our biggest, most ambitious campaign ever.

I thought the "Queen in council house shocker" was a Green spokesperson reacting somewhat tongue in cheek to a stupid question, not actual Green policy.

That said, I won;t be voting Green, though I rather like them, because of their utterly stupid "sex work is work like any other" policy. Also, I wasn't impressed by that spokesperson the other day caving in after he tried to open an honest debate about gender identity, either. I suppose I don't blame him as he did get flamed, but we should be free to discuss it, and if he caves in so quickly to a few LibDems shouting "bigot!" at him, he's not going to last long in politics.

HeeHiles · 29/01/2015 11:51

because of their utterly stupid "sex work is work like any other" policy

See Whistling's Post above

Have you actually read their policy? Or are you just quoting the DM? Hmm

chiliplant · 29/01/2015 11:51

Support is not extremely high for the royals at all!!she was clearly joking about the queen in a council house...she ius too rich to be eligible.
Their manifesto will b released in march and quite frankly it would be nice t have a party in power that does not bow down t corporate interests instead of ours. The sex worker argument is about making them safer.I'm not comfortable with legalising sex work but at the end of the day it would b voted on and wouldn't happen without ppls support.
The Brighton argument..well.. Their hands are tied a lot as its a Tory led council. The greens have achieved paying their carers a living wage which is a great achievement.

ArcheryAnnie · 29/01/2015 12:15

I don't read the DM, HeeHiles, so I don't know what's in it. Perhaps you could lend me your copy?

ArcheryAnnie · 29/01/2015 12:16

In other news, Rupert Reed (the Green candidate I referenced earlier) has just tweeted "I'm no TERF", so he and his party can fuck right off for using misogynistic slurs.

HeeHiles · 29/01/2015 13:02

I follow @greenrupertreed and he hasn't tweeted anything today - sure it's the right one?

What's TERF mean?

ArcheryAnnie · 29/01/2015 13:09

He tweeted that about 3 hours ago.

And if you want to know what "TERF" is, and how it works as a misogynistic slur, this post by Sarah Ditum explains it pretty well: sarahditum.com/2014/07/28/how-terf-works/

It seems the Green leaders have already apologised for his performance the other day. I wonder where this will lead?

27 January 2015

In light of comments from Rupert Read the following comments have been issued:

Statement from Natalie Bennett, leader of the Green Party, and Amelia Womack and Shahrar Ali, Deputy Leaders of the Green Party:

"As leaders of the Green Party we wish to state our disappointment with the comments made by Rupert Read and express our sympathies with anyone who was hurt or offended by his remarks.

"We are pleased that Rupert Read has issued a full apology and hope that his meetings with LGBTIQ groups will help to repair some of the upset that has been caused.

"The Green Party is wholly committed to fighting for equality and fair representation for all transgender and LGBTIQ communities and we wish to reiterate and reaffirm our party's commitment to that cause. We now want to do all we can to move forward positively and continue the important job of standing up for LGBTIQ rights."

Statement from the Green Party Women's Group:

"We reiterate the sentiment of the Green Party's leaders in response to these comments from Cambridge parliamentary candidate; Rupert Read. We were deeply concerned that Rupert Read's comments could promote misunderstanding of trans issues, and of modern feminism. Green Party Women considers feminism which excludes trans people to be an extremist fringe, with no place in the Green party, or the wider feminist movement. The feminist movement cannot succeed without paying attention to all aspects of inequality. We welcome all women with open arms, and defer to trans women in issues of particular relevance to them.

"We hope this incident serves as a reminder for all our future candidates of the importance of being informed about issues of oppression. We will continue to work to ensure the party fights for inclusive feminism, and that all our candidates and members are briefed on the issues of all women."

WhistlingPot · 29/01/2015 13:41

I'd never heard of the term either btw, so thanks for the link ArchieAnnie. I also came across this which I though was quite good too:

noanodyne.tumblr.com/post/85225176387/yes-terf-is-a-slur

WhistlingPot · 29/01/2015 13:43

Autocorrected your name there too!

ArcheryAnnie · 29/01/2015 14:03

That's interesting, thanks Whistlingpot.

One of the many ironies of the current political situation is that I now see a lot of gender-critical trans women (who talk about gender identity in much the same way as Rupert Read did before he caved), get called "TERFs" and "transphobic" by women who identify as "cis allies", which makes my head hurt, and which makes terms like "TERF" and transphobia lose any meaning.

WhistlingPot · 29/01/2015 14:26

I have to say it's taken some getting my head round this afternoon, but every day's a school day on MN Grin

I'd never heard of Rupert Read before today either and very much hope he has used the term in error, perhaps he was trying to distance himself from the negative associations but messed up again! We'll have to see.

ArcheryAnnie · 29/01/2015 17:28

Gawd, now another Green candidate (Stella Gardiner, Bexlyheath) has been throwing around TERF (to trans women who are challenging her!), so she can fuck off, too.

Green leadership: you are burning your bridges here. Sort it out.

ArcheryAnnie · 29/01/2015 17:42

...and now she's approving of calling other women "chav cis women". Well done, Greens, for putting someone so clueless up as a candidate. I'm sure some of her constituents will be delighted she think of them as "chavs", and it will serve her well at the ballot box.

HappydaysArehere · 29/01/2015 17:44

Apparently their election in Brighton has been a disaster. This is what someone I know says. The traffic is a nightmare because of speed restrictions - takes ages to get anywhere as traffic piles up. I am told that "they definitely won't get in again".

Andrewofgg · 29/01/2015 17:49

I'm more concerned with a "sin tax" on imported meat. No food should ever be taxed. Not local, not imported. Not even food which is harmful if taken to excess.

UncleT · 29/01/2015 17:56

Anyone who seriously advocates allowing people to join organisations who have the stated aim of attacking us and subverting us is both an idiot and extremely dangerous. As for open borders, well what a cute idea. However, particularly if our economy is shrinking (which they plan) then we'll all starve. An army is unnecessary?? Sigh, I love the way they assume that the rest of the world will all just behave completely rationally and predictably because we've suddenly become all fluffy and less warlike.

MehsMum · 29/01/2015 18:38

I just had a look at their website, with a close read of a few bits.

I just don't see how you can make a crowded island 'sustainable' while reducing immigration controls. It just doesn't add up.

Their plans would also result in a bureaucratic nightmare: 'licensing of all animal breeders', for example (they don't clarify if you'll need a licence to hatch a clutch of bantam's eggs, or have Tabby produce a litter of kittens, or if they only mean commercial breeders).

They strike me as fluffy idealists. I'm not at all sure that our current mode of life is sustainable, but I'm not convinced by this lot.

So, er, no.

WhistlingPot · 29/01/2015 21:58

Interesting:

A survey by the website voteforpolicies.org.uk reports that in blind tests (the 500,000 people it has polled were unaware of which positions belong to which parties), the Green party’s policies are more popular than those of any other. If people voted for what they wanted, the Greens would be the party of government.
