To think the Green Party are just making themselves look ridiculous?

They really seemed to be gaining support...

But this new 'we will evict the queen from Buckingham palace and put her into a council house' just makes them sound stupid?

I've seen Green Party supporters on facebook sharing this post with excitement and glee but... Really?

What a shame that they had to use a "Green" platform for their drivel. Mainstream candidates generally don't address the environmental issues, and they could be forced into action with a credible Green candidate.

BuildYourOwnSnowman · 26/01/2015 09:49

They have a fundamental vision of the future that is very different to he status quo. They are not going to achieve that as a minority party. However, as the greens I would expect them to have some fundamental green policies that they could realistically bring in as their bargaining chip for coalition. And obviously issues for their constituents. At the moment they are a little too radical on everything so I find it difficult to see what they consider the key issues they could progress.

And their policies would in a lot of cases involve having to leave the eu to see them through so I see them as an anti-eu party.

I think Caroline Lucas comes across a lot better than Natalie Bennett. She was contradicting herself over the course of the piece I heard her on.

Anyway, I don't have a green candidate in my constituency from what I have seen.

If you google 'basic income' you will find a lot of information. Given that the current models of employment within capitalism as a whole are breaking down it's an idea whose time has come. I admit it sounds odd at first, but it's sound.

I liked this piece on work and benefits, I've linked it once or twice before notesbrokensociety.wordpress.com/2014/09/07/hard-work-why-we-need-to-change-the-way-we-think-about-work-pay-and-benefits/

maninawomansworld · 26/01/2015 10:35

The greens are a bunch of nutcases. They are a one issue party who should never ever be allowed anywhere near anything resembling power!

Don't get me wrong, I think its extremely important to do all we can to live in harmony with our plant - cutting down on waste, non essential car use etc. but the greens are useless, anyone living in Brighton will tell you that.

Brighton is an excellent example of what would happen to this country if the greens ever managed to get into power but happily most people realise that they are at best a protest group. I believe our political system is better with their input, they stimulate debate and make everyone think more about the very real need to be 'green' - but a credible political party they are not.

Bazoo23 · 26/01/2015 10:52

Abolition of the monarchy? Well goodbye to a HUGE percentage of the money GB makes from tourism! Stupid party, no place inthe debates with the adults.
No doubt under the greens it would be someones "human rights" to stage a terrorist attack.
Fucking ridiculous.

pinefruits · 26/01/2015 10:59

I think it's a bonkers party and thankfully I don't think they'll ever get in but regarding the "huge percentage of money GB makes from tourism"...... no I don't believe that for a second. There's no proof that they help to bring in the tourists at all, they'd still come with or without a royal family, as has been proved by France, the most visited tourist spot on earth who got rid of their royal family hundreds of years ago. But that's a different debate.

Bazoo23 · 26/01/2015 11:11

The British monarchy is englands biggest tourism draw hands down.

StarsOfTrackAndField · 26/01/2015 11:14

Really Bazoo? Do you have any stats to back that up? Or is it just something pro-monarchists use when they can't think of a sound intellectual reason for an unelected head of state?

pinefruits · 26/01/2015 11:18

That hasn't been proved Bazoo, it's what their PR would have us all believe. But even they have to admit they have no proof. In actual fact the most visited tourist spot in the UK is Legoland. Tourists certainly don't rush in their droves to stare at a palace or two knowing full well they'll never get a glimpse of the queen. It's the UKs rich history that has the appeal, and that will still be there if the royals were gone.

shovetheholly · 26/01/2015 11:18

Mumsnets centre-rightness much in evidence here.

Just to redress the balance: far from thinking them a bunch of lunatics, I am considering joining and will definitely be voting for them next election.

Sallyingforth · 26/01/2015 11:19

The monarchy thing is way down the list of their crazy policies.
Everything they want to do is unaffordable.

Abolish VAT. Pay everyone £71 a week. Use only super-expensive, unreliable 'green' energy. Let the whole world move in to demand homes and support.

Where the hell do they think the money will come from?

They are stark, staring, raving, bonkers.

shovetheholly · 26/01/2015 11:22

I think we could easily afford all that if those that are better off pay a higher rate of tax.

Sallyingforth · 26/01/2015 11:23

Mumsnets centre-rightness much in evidence here

LOL !!!

It all depends where you are looking from.

MoanCollins · 26/01/2015 11:24

Their ideas on Al-Qaeda and ISIS are worrying. The citizens income is also a terrible idea as it will go to large swathes of people who have no need of support from the state. It would be better to give higher amounts to poorer people. And there is also a danger that it would simply become a subsidy enabling companies to pay lower wages and profit more whilst a huge public debt is run up to facilitate their profits.

And the remark about the Queen is ridiculous and facile. The Queen has a good amount of personal wealth and privately owned houses such as Balmoral so she's not going to be in a council flat any time soon.

Sallyingforth · 26/01/2015 11:25

shovethe holly
I nominate you for the Green government's first Chancellor of the Exchequer. Good luck!

shovetheholly · 26/01/2015 11:25

True. If you're looking from UKIP, it probably looks very liberal!

StarsOfTrackAndField · 26/01/2015 11:26

Well from a lot of your posts Sallying, I think you see anyone to the left of Mussolini as a raving commie!

WhatismyLife · 26/01/2015 11:27

Try driving into Brighton and you'll never want to vote for them. Everyone I know in brighton hates them. Its a shambles.

MoanCollins · 26/01/2015 11:27

Anyway, I'm very much in favour of a neutral non-political head of state. Anything would be preferable to President Tone.

glenthebattleostrich · 26/01/2015 11:34

Actually, I was basing my opinion on watching her bring interviewed on the BBC (which is v left wing at the moment) and their policies. I still think they are a fucking bad joke.

Also read this weekend, I forget where I read Brighton has on of the worst rates for recycling in the country. Not exactly a ringing endorsement of their green credentials

StarsOfTrackAndField · 26/01/2015 11:40

BBC left wing?

Give us a break.

Paxman came out as a one nation Tory after he quit newnsnight

Nick Robinson is a Tory (ex party member)

Evan Davies has written books championing the free market and privatisation.

Andrew Neill is a Tory and edited a Murdoch paper.

It isn't like rightwingers are under represented in BBC political correspondents.

ItsAllGoingToBeFine · 26/01/2015 11:42

Brighton is not a fair example. Issues in Brighten are caused by Brighton council which is minority led by the Greens, ie councillors from other parties vote against them all of the time.

There is a site somewhere, vote by policy or something, where you tick preferred policies without knowing the party.

According to that site, most people end up Green...

MoanCollins · 26/01/2015 11:47

Glen, interesting you bring up the issue of the BBCs left wing bias. The BBCs refusal to have the Green's on televised debates is a blatant piece of politicking designed to damage the Tories by splitting their vote with UKIP but protecting Labour from a split with the Greens. They've become so far removed from their charter it's hard to see how the licence fee can be justified unless they change.

StarsOfTrackAndField · 26/01/2015 11:50

Moan

You are talking utter cotter here. The decision to include/exclude the greens was made by OFCOM not the BBC or any other broadcaster.

But hey, why let facts or evidence get in the way?

ItsAllGoingToBeFine · 26/01/2015 11:56

That is incorrect. OFCOM decides the "major" parties which must be included. The BBC, and other broadcasters, can have whoever they want on as long as the major parties are included.
