to think that you need to get yourself into a certain mindset before getting round to dying your hair

It is one of the biggest ball aches ever, but I am going out tonight. Had the dye for about a week, but I just can't be arsed doing the actual deed. I need a kick up the arse.

OMFGs, I thought I was the only one! Trouble is, [in the case of roots] there's such a small window.

I washed my hair yesterday. I am due to do my roots, and today should be the day. If I can't be arsed today, I lose the opp until the next day after I wash my hair.

NB - No, I don't wash my hair every day. It's long and unwieldly at the best of times. Even every other day feels like more faff than it's worth.

Cubtrouble · 24/01/2015 13:05

Its a poxy messy job and purely done for other peoples benefit. I dye my hair to keep other people happy, my sister and my aunts who all kept commenting on how grey i was going. i couldnt have given two craps about it until i got pressured and now it HAS to be done or i look like a badger. annoying, i feel your pain

Gruntfuttock · 24/01/2015 13:05

I've just seen so many newspaper articles with horrific pictures of people who've suddenly had bad reactions to a hair dye they've been using for years, that I thought I'd better do the patch test.

I bought my first box - sync myself up did patch test and ended up with a really sore piece of skin.

I've bought a completely different type - and it's been sat waiting for ages.

I need to cover the grey - can't get into the mind set - plus think I'm worried about another bad reaction. If this one is the same I'm going to be really struggling to find dye - while if it sit in the box untouched I can still live in hope Grin.

DazzleU · 24/01/2015 13:15

synd ? - I meant psych.

MyIronLung · 24/01/2015 13:32

I'm also a procrastinator. I bought my dye (live xxx stuff) in November. I finally did it 2 weeks ago. It used to be because I liked the colour, (red) now it's because I have a horrendous amount of grey Sad
I swear this time last year I didn't have any

FightOrFlight · 24/01/2015 13:35

< currently sitting with blue hair dye and clingfilm on my head >

this thread was the kick up the backside I needed Grin

BeyondDoesBootcamp · 24/01/2015 13:37

Yep fight, i'm eating my lunch then doing mine after that Grin

hobnobsaremyfavourite · 24/01/2015 13:38

100% agree
This thread means I am finally DTD so to speak after weeks of procrastinating.
Hate it but the grey is beyond a joke.
I am 40 FFS

MargotLovedTom · 24/01/2015 13:39

I'm so pleased other people feel the same way! I fecking hate dyeing my hair but hate the grey more.
I normally tell (a very blunt) mate that I'm doing it the next day and that makes me feel like I have to bite the bullet and do it, otherwise she'll demand to know what's going on with the three inches of grey roots that I still haven't sorted out Wink.

Fluffyears · 24/01/2015 13:39

I did mind the other night after putting it off. It's the bloody rinsing it I hate. I haven't got a shower attachment in the bathroom so use a jug and ended up with water inside my ear Sad. I won't wash it off in the shiwer cubicle as it'll stain the sealant.

TeenagersDriveMeMad · 24/01/2015 13:40

If it's any help I used Lush henna for the first time the other week - it was meant to be dark red.

HALF of my hair is violent orange. The other half is the blonde it was when I started Hmm. And you can't strip out or dye over henna so I'm stuck looking like some weird yellow and orange Cruella De Vile until it grows out Angry.

PunkrockerGirl · 24/01/2015 13:40

YANBU. It's right pita. My hairdresser has started a new thing where you buy your own usual dye, take it into the salon and they'll do it for you for ten quid. Must say I'm tempted Blush

hobnobsaremyfavourite · 24/01/2015 13:40

Glad this isnt skype mumsnet or you lot would need brain bleach.

Bought some before cmas, did the patch test and lost the gloves and instructions so am now in limbo! I've only got the odd grey peeping through at the moment so haven't bothered before and now I don't remember if it said to put it on dry or wet hair, how long to leave it etc etc!!

hobnobsaremyfavourite · 24/01/2015 13:42

Only another 15 minutes to wait
Thank god foe mumsnet

weaselsquirrel · 24/01/2015 13:44

I thought it was only me! I know it only takes around an hour but I have to get to the point where I can notice people looking at the grey before I take the plunge and dye it. I'm only 29 but have been going grey since 17 im now about 40%. I did it last Saturday when my mother had the kids and it made me quite angry that I was having to do this on my only 2 hour breather from the toddler a week.

foreverton · 24/01/2015 13:45

I did mine yesterday! Just moved and got a new bathroom and am very messy whilst applying it so took a mirror into the garden, put it on top of my wheelie bin and braved the bloody cold!
Felt sooo much better when it was all done, xxl range here too but can't remember the name,I was sick of ruining towels when dying my hair so I just bought a black one to use just for this.
I also rinse in freezing cold water for a super shine:)

OnHerMajestysSecretCervix · 24/01/2015 13:48

YANBU.

I do it when I am so bored that nothing else will entertain me enough. So I eventually slope off to the bathroom and get it done.

Saying that though, my last dye job took most of the day. It is currently turquoise/green/purple.

So when I do finally get around to it, I evidently go the full hog Wink

Such a faff though.

foreverton · 24/01/2015 13:49

P.s I put two tesco carrier bags over my head to protect the floors Wtf whilst waiting and opened the door to the postman and wondered why he looked horrified!!

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 24/01/2015 13:49

I have a croppy short style (longest bit maybe 2" long on the top)
It's not any easier really because if I miss a bit , it's bleedin' ovbious.
I think "Oh, I don't need a full bottle" but then I CBA to measure out half. (Though in my defence, I buy it on special offer )

My ears and hairline usually get dyed as well, but it scrubs off.
I'm going to dye mine next week before my next cut, so I'm not sitting there with horror roots in the chair.

LadyJinglyJones · 24/01/2015 13:50

Yes you are so right OP, it is "a certain mindset"! It's not even just being bothered to do it, it's having the time, energy and the right attitude (optimistic and positive about doing something for the sake of my appearance) all at the same time.

I always do the allergy test but then I always plan to do it a day or two later but it often slips because I just don't feel up to it.

When I do though, aside from the faff I quite enjoy it. That's partly because I don't stick to one colour, I tend to try something new (albeit all in the same ballpark, coppery red) so it's exciting to see how it will turn out. There's always the possibility it will turn out to be THE perfect colour.
