Davina's 5 Weeks to Sugar-Free is a total con and most people can't afford real maple syrup

I bought this to try and reduce my sugar intake , but the recipes are full of sugar just in the very expensive form of maple syrup and honey! Ffs I can barely keep my house warm let alone afford maple!

If you want a fab sugar free and healthy cookbook, look at the My Petite Kitchen book. It's written by a NZ lady called Eleanor Ozich and the recipes are amazing. I made a beautiful cake the other day, just with eggs, coconut, bananas, almond butter and blueberries.

I'm pretty sure its on book depository - I highly recommend it!!

Disclaimer - she does use maple or agave syrups, but not in every recipe!!

So...is she talking about sugar or complex carbohydrates?

Complex carbs aren't bad for you. Just don't eat too many. They get metabolised slowly and absorbed slowly into the blood stream where the glucose is used as energy or stored...as fat.

Simple sugars. A different ball game. Can be absorbed much quicker so not used immediately. So they are stored.

"This is not a weight loss diet as such, but it will keep you trim because you won’t be taking in empty calories in the form of sweeties and processed food,” explains Davina."

So... don't eat sweets and cut down on processed food. And she's written a book to explain it Grin

I think that's been well known for ages.

"She says: “I now focus on swapping nutrient-light junk foods, which are full of empty calories and do no good, for nutrient-dense foods which are packed with goodness. Sounds comlicated but it's really not. If you want to look and feel your best, you just have to feed your body the right things and make good choices."

Fuck me - that is not rocket science. That has been health advice for ages. Eat less crap.

Is she a nutritionist? Or is she using her celebrity to sell a book?

125g Dark Chocolate (100% cocoa)
100ml milk
100g unsalted butter, plus extra for greasing the tin
175g honey
150g maple syrup
Seeds scraped from ½ split vanilla pod
50g cocoa powder, sieved
3 eggs
150g wholemeal spelt flour
1 tsp baking powder

Maple syrup - mainly sucrose. Needs to broken down. Would be interesting to see the effect that has on blood glucose levels

Honey - Mainly fructose and glucose. Has an effect on the glycaemic index - which is how quickly blood glucose rises

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Glycemic_index

GI is the important issue here.

Here's a thought.

Rather than making brownies using alternative sugar sources, don't eat brownies.

I know, I know.

There's no money to be made in that.

There is money to be made in saying you can still have your cake and eat it.

My new book.

How to be sugar free.

Page 1

Don't eat foods containing lots of sugar.

Page 2

Don't add sugar to food.

Will it be a hit? I might need a celebrity to endorse it.

If she's eating foods with maple syrup and honey in them she is still spiking her insulin....surely? To deal with them.

That must cause a drop inblood sugar at some time leadingyou to crave more.

Pointless!

As a Canadian who has a sugar bush and makes maple syrup every year, I am telling you it is sweet, delicious and will totally spike your sugars!
It is natural in that the only processing is the evaporation of the water from the sap, and it does contain vitamins and such, but it is no miracle food.
It is wonderful drizzled on pancakes, bacon, sausage, ice cream, shaved ice, etc

Op YANBU I did exactly the same as you, was all ready to give it a go until I saw how expensive maple syrup is Shock

Am guessing the expense is not an issue for Davina though....
