Davina's 5 Weeks to Sugar-Free is a total con and most people can't afford real maple syrup

I bought this to try and reduce my sugar intake , but the recipes are full of sugar just in the very expensive form of maple syrup and honey! Ffs I can barely keep my house warm let alone afford maple!

What we need is the opinion of nutrirional expert Gillian Mckeith . Or to give her her full title, Gillian Mckeith

adsy · 18/02/2015 08:00

Trying really really hard to find any proof that complex carbs take longer to digest than simple carbs.
In fact, I think I'll give up 'cos unless research has changed in the last year or so, there is no proof.
really annoys me that there is so much pseudo science guff spouted

Essentially, have an apple instead.

TheRealAmandaClarke · 18/02/2015 08:47

How about a toffee apple? Wink

She went to the jungle. Grin

I don't agree with anything that tells you you have to cut something out of your diet completely. Utter nonsense. Sugar is not evil and not addictive.

Moderation is the key.

jasper · 18/02/2015 14:11

maple syrup and honey are still sugar.
if there are any health benefits over refined sugar they are very minor.

they certainly rot your teeth in just the same way.And make you fat in the same way.

I can't abide books claiming to be about being sugar free and having recipes full of other forms of sugar than the white stuff

jasper · 18/02/2015 14:12

adsy I like your style!

Smokedsalmonbagel · 18/02/2015 15:18

The aldi maple syrup is very runny and doesn't have much flavour. I was a bit disappointed with it on my pancakes last night.
Just felt the need to share!

funnyossity · 18/02/2015 15:22

I looked at this book, noted the maple syrup, put the book back on shelf.

YANBU

TheRealAmandaClarke · 18/02/2015 15:28

Maple syrup tastes nicer on pancakes than caster sugar imo.
That is its sole (yet not insignificant) benefit.

TheRealAmandaClarke · 18/02/2015 15:30

atkins. Now that was a good sugar-busting plan.

specialsubject · 18/02/2015 16:21

Davina freely admits on her twitter (to no-one's surprise) that the book is ghost-written. I can't find who did write it and if they had any qualifications.

No-one in the diet industry is in it for their health. Or yours, come to that.

also no law against selling useless items.

florascotia · 18/02/2015 16:25

The USA Dept of Agriculture classifies maple syrup and agave syrup as 'sweets'. The Dept has very detailed list, full of basic info on hundreds of foodstuffs:
ndb.nal.usda.gov/ndb/search/list

The list says that maple syrup = 67% carb; [sugar]cane syrup = 73% carb and agave syrup = 76% carb.

Re fructose, this is just one article, but it's from a reputable scientific source:
ajcn.nutrition.org/content/86/4/895.full

and here is what The Guardian says, rather more dramatically:
www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2013/oct/21/fructose-poison-sugar-industry-pseudoscience

HappydaysArehere · 18/02/2015 17:54

I may be wrong but I understood artificial sweeteners were linked to cancer!
I have tried all sorts of tricks but I know I am deluding myself when I substitute lots of dried fruit in place of sugar, higher fruit content jam mixed into fruit for a fruit flan, yes maple syrup, ground almond, etc. oh! Lots of eggs in place of fat........how we struggle!

TheRealAmandaClarke · 18/02/2015 18:10

I believe the trick is to eat less cake, less often.

Oldraver · 18/02/2015 18:48

I have a sort of relative that is on one of the weekly club diets she regularily posts pictures of her 'treats' ie a huge bowl of fruit or her breakfast which is a low fat (but high sugar) yoghurt and a shed load of fruit. She might as well eat a Mars Bar. I dotn know how these diet companies can keep on peddling this shit

My mum came round yesterday and we were discussing diets. My Achilles heal is savoury stuff, crisps, pastry types, cheese.

Hers is sugar. Chocolate specifically and she really struggles. She isn't huge but she still struggles.

When she described it, it made me very grateful that my weakness was savoury and not sugar because its much easier to fake alternative healthier savoury stuff and there no withdrawal like there is with sugar. I realise carbs turn into sugar and my weakness is carbs but it isn't as addictive as sugary products themselves.

FWIW if it hasn't been mentioned already, Magnesium is supposed to be excellent for those who crave sugar, it really cuts down the 'need'.

I use sugar free maple syrup that was recommended to me by a diabetic

Mistigri · 02/06/2015 07:22

YANBU to think it's all a load of bollocks for the reasons given up thread (sugar is sugat) but it's not a "con" unless she's pretending to be something she isn't.

if you buy a celeb diet book and expect it to contain scientifically accurate advice on diet then you're a mug!

pettywitchinlondon · 02/06/2015 07:33

Its hardly giving up sugar if you just switch it with maple and honey. That's easy.
