Im in hospital on a ward full of noisy older men who keep shouting sexist views and are competing over who has the most disgusting and worst symptom.

WIBU to discharge myself if they try and make me stay here tonight? I didn't think mixed wards were allowed.

OP you could be seriously endangering your life. How much more crisis do you want to be in?

Let them assess you. Pack a bag just in case and go to A&E.

HoraceCope · 24/01/2015 11:02

can you ring surgical assessment unit and talk to them without going via A & E?

MoominKoalaAndMiniMoom · 24/01/2015 12:50

On my way to A&E. Had to get DD sorted out first

FannyFifer · 24/01/2015 12:54

Oh moomin you poor thing, they should be able to scan in a&e surely.
Hope they get you sorted.

MoominKoalaAndMiniMoom · 24/01/2015 12:59

Good luck, OP! Going to A&E definitely the right decision. Flowers

Don't let them fob you off waiting ages for pain relief. Ask for gas and air if nothing else because it can make a real difference.

Hope you're ok.

TwatFaceBitch · 24/01/2015 13:08

I have been watching this thread.

Hope you get seen quickly and get it sorted.

Are you sure they're all there for A&E, and that it's not also an Out Of Hours GP centre? That might mean the queue will move more quickly. Also, lots of the people there using up seats will be family/friends, not the actually patients, so again, things might move quicker.
If they're triaging correctly, you might be further up the queue if you're in a lot of pain.
I'm always slightly amused in A&E to see everyone's eyes swivel to the sliding doors whenever someone new arrives, to see how much visible blood there is, and whether that person will overtake them in the queue.

clam · 24/01/2015 15:01

Sorry, forgot to say that I hope you're sorted soon. Flowers

Its a great place for a game of Need or No Need. If you guess 'no need' and they get called through to 'Majors', you know you were wrong Grin

Its a distraction from the pain in any case
case.

TwatFaceBitch · 24/01/2015 15:20

So what's your score so far for need, no need? Smile

MoominKoalaAndMiniMoom · 24/01/2015 15:21

Not got one wrong yet! Also trying to figure out whether I'll be majors or minors... Minors seems to be seeing people quicker so fingers crossed

Its a great place for a game of Need or No Need.

Sometimes they change the rules though and then it gets confusing. I remember being in A&E with my son and we were playing that game. There was an elderly lady, moaning with pain and a clearly broken arm (very unnatural shape/angle - boak). She was left in the waiting room whilst a young woman with no obvious pain/injury was called through.

MoominKoalaAndMiniMoom · 24/01/2015 15:43

Its so busy :( this could be a long day!!

Quite a few people going into A&E triage and being sent across to Out of Hours instead.

TwatFaceBitch · 24/01/2015 15:49

Yaay you're getting them rightGrin
I have no idea which you'd be in. Think I'd prob be rubbish at playing

clam · 24/01/2015 15:52

When I was in there on a Saturday lunchtime with ds (around 7yo at the time) once, who had come off his scooter and ripped a gash in his chin, a large crowd of clearly drunk men came in with one of their mates who'd gashed his leg open in a fight. Although I don't think his injury was any worse than ds's, he was ushered out of sight pretty quickly, as both he and all his mates were swearing like troopers and being quite intimidating. They were all asked to leave.

MoominKoalaAndMiniMoom · 24/01/2015 16:00

I've just given in and taken more cocodamol. Every time I ask here for painkillers im given a paracetamol.

OP posts:
clam · 24/01/2015 16:04

What is the obsession hospitals have with paracetamol? Sil was offered that when she was writhing on the floor with appendictis. And dh was discharged with it after surgery for a bone graft on the knee.

Forewarned, I insisted I had copious amounts of Tramadol, cocodamol and nurofen when I left after orthopaedic surgery.

TwatFaceBitch · 24/01/2015 16:12

That reminds me of the school matron. She dished out rennies for everything Confused we call her the rennie woman
we were true rebels

BeggarsCantBeChoosers · 24/01/2015 16:24

They use paracetamol first, it helps to see if it takes the edge off pain or not, and if it doesn't, morph one based pain relief works better with paracetamol than on it's own.

Some people demand strong painkillers and did to their surprise that paracetamol helps a little. Depends on where the pain is and why. A huge amount don't though, and you know very soon. Then's the time to give something stronger.
