AIBU to ask the neighbours to open the curtains?

A youngish couple with no children bought a house on our estate about a year ago. They don't get involved with any of the activities such as the summer bbq and basically seem to isolate themselves from the rest of us, their loss. However my main bug is that they NEVER have the living room curtains open and quite often leave the other ones shut also, today every single one of them are shut and I know they are home.

I've hinted a couple of times that it would be best for them to leave them open, the girl mumbled something about a projector and watching films, but they can't be watching films all the time.

AIBU to just point blank ask them to open the curtains during the day, it really depresses me to look across to their house with all the curtains closed, it doesn't look inviting and it looks odd compared to the rest of the estate, we all manage to open their curtains everyday, so why can't they? My DH thinks I'm BU and should just leave them to it but I think when it effects other people I have a right to say something?

You sound very nosey and in need of a hobby, if this is all you've got to focus on. Of course you're BU, what someone does in their own house, with their own curtains is none of your business. I really can't see how it looks scruffy either, it's no difference to having blinds or shutters at the window.
What exactly does the couples age or parental status have to do with anything either?

Hobby2014 · 21/01/2015 15:10

Seriously? Do you tell neighbours if their grass needs cutting because it looks scruffy? Or their front door needs painting? Or their net curtains don't match yours?
It doesn't affect you in any way whatsoever.
But congratulations, if this is the only thing causing you concern, you must have a pretty decent life.

The Barbeque-avoiding bastards.

Notso · 21/01/2015 15:10

And this is why I will never choose to live on an estate. OP you sound like Hyacinth Bucket, no wonder they decline the summer soirée barbecue.
Almost all my direct neighbours keep their curtains shut. It makes me think their houses are musty but it's none of my business.
You need to listen to Rrrricharrrd and butt out.

cocostrawberry · 21/01/2015 15:10

They have nets too, which makes the thing even more ridiculous. Why bother having nets if you then have the curtains shut all the time?

doing this wastes energy: you need to let in sun when it is there. It also makes the house damp and mouldy by reducing air circulation.

but you said they bought the place. So it is their property to wreck as they choose. And their energy bills to raise as they choose. Energy waste is selfish but that's not a crime.

MYOB.

FightOrFlight · 21/01/2015 15:11

OP - are you the nosey mare that lives across the road from me?

I remember her saying to me "that was a lovely bikini you were trying on the other day" Shock

I replied "no, it was my bra and I was getting a top out of the wardrobe to put on - why the hell were you looking at my bedroom window and admiring what I was wearing?"

My bedroom curtains have remained permanently shut since then. I don't need some suburban Gok Wan treating my house like a fucking catwalk show.

KingJoffreyObviouslyWatchesHol · 21/01/2015 15:11

If they have nets but you can still tell the curtains are shut then you are looking way too closely.

Onceuponatimetherewas · 21/01/2015 15:12

It looks odd compared to the rest of the estate - I see that Stepford has claimed you already.

GoringBit · 21/01/2015 15:13

They have nets but keep their curtains closed? They're clearly unhinged. Or up to no good.

Lweji · 21/01/2015 15:14

Did you post a similar thread before?

Is there such a thing as a closed curtain troll?

Hmm
SqueezyCheeseWeasel · 21/01/2015 15:15

Nets?

The cunts.

gamerchick · 21/01/2015 15:15

This has to be a piss take man. Nobody is so bloody controlling of people who live in the fucking street like what I've just read in the OP. Hmm

Ohfourfoxache · 21/01/2015 15:15

Sorry Coco but whether they have their curtains open or not, it has fuck all to do wih you.

Fwiw our curtains are permanently closed. I suffer from depression and essentially want to shut the world out. Permanently. In my darkest days the thought of opening the curtains has actually made me break out in a cold sweat - when I'm in the house I'm in my "sanctuary" and I don't want to let anyone in. Apart from DH, but then he's seen me at beyond my worst (I.e. Things I can't even remember)

Fully aware this isn't "normal" and when dc1 arrives in March I will try to have them open a bit - I don't want my problems to impact on him/her and I want things to be as "normal" as possible. Note that I would be doing it for them, not some neighbour who thinks I should let the sun in fgs. But fwiw I'm starting to panic about it already - I'm not going to have anywhere safe to hide.

Glitterspy · 21/01/2015 15:15

YOU are the reason they are keeping their curtains closed, you know that right?

Hatespiders · 21/01/2015 15:16

Nancy66 · 21/01/2015 15:16

they are in the witness protection programme. Definitely. Cannot possibly be anything else.

Ohfourfoxache · 21/01/2015 15:17

coco I also have nets.

Couldn't give a shit what you or anyone else thinks is "ridiculous" tbh.

It has nothing to do with you.

SqueezyCheeseWeasel · 21/01/2015 15:17

Maybe they are nudists and are doing you a favour by saving you money in long term eyebleach outlay?

Nancy66 · 21/01/2015 15:18

or spies. Like in The Americans - although, in fairness, they did go to BBQs with their neighbours as part of their cover.

lavendersgreen · 21/01/2015 15:18

I know what you mean OP, the house at the bottom of our garden does the same and I wish they wouldn't.

GoringBit · 21/01/2015 15:18

I don't know, Nancy, I was thinking opium den or pipe bomb production.
