AIBU to ask the neighbours to open the curtains?

A youngish couple with no children bought a house on our estate about a year ago. They don't get involved with any of the activities such as the summer bbq and basically seem to isolate themselves from the rest of us, their loss. However my main bug is that they NEVER have the living room curtains open and quite often leave the other ones shut also, today every single one of them are shut and I know they are home.

I've hinted a couple of times that it would be best for them to leave them open, the girl mumbled something about a projector and watching films, but they can't be watching films all the time.

AIBU to just point blank ask them to open the curtains during the day, it really depresses me to look across to their house with all the curtains closed, it doesn't look inviting and it looks odd compared to the rest of the estate, we all manage to open their curtains everyday, so why can't they? My DH thinks I'm BU and should just leave them to it but I think when it effects other people I have a right to say something?

I defo wouldn't be opening my curtains because quite clearly you're the sort that would be peering in.

I can't even believe you've asked the woman about it fgs

TheWitTank · 21/01/2015 14:50

I'm going for reverse.

LidlMermaid · 21/01/2015 14:50

My neighbour has a very nice car in their driveway that hasn't moved once in the 12 years we've lived here. The tyres are flat and the paintwork is fadibg and it fucks me off that there's a perfectly lovely car going to waste. None of my business though so I'd never dream of saying anything. Likewise its none of your business if your neighbours never open the curtains. Maybe they don't like being constantly watched by nosy neighbours ;)

ExitPursuedByABear · 21/01/2015 14:50

I think you should knock on their door and demand that they open all their curtains.

Or you could march in and do it for them.

AlpacaLypse · 21/01/2015 14:51

I haven't opened my curtains for months now!

Floralnomad · 21/01/2015 14:51

YABVU and also if someone else's curtains cause you to be depressed you seriously need to get a life.

angelos02 · 21/01/2015 14:51

Just a thought - maybe they are doing it to keep the heat in?

LadySybilLikesSloeGin · 21/01/2015 14:51

It helps to keep them closed. It reduces the amount of heat leaving through the windows in the winter, and keeps the rooms cool in the summer by stopping the suns rays going into the room and causing a greenhouse effect.

Maybe she just doesn't like nosy people Wink

BellsUpMyNose · 21/01/2015 14:52

is your neighbour nicole kidman and as two dcs one boy and one girl

StillinShockAhhhhhhh · 21/01/2015 14:52

LOL had it occurred to you that maybe the reason they keep the curtains shut is because of nosey sods like you staring at their house?

SauvignonBlanche · 21/01/2015 14:53

Have you tried dialling 101 about it? Hmm

KingJoffreyObviouslyWatchesHol · 21/01/2015 14:53

I work nights. My curtains are often closed.

Also close the lounge curtains when watching a DVD.

Don't give a shite what the neighbours think. Nothing. Because they're sensible and reasonable and have their own lives to live.

Besides, when I was growing up everyone had nets. Same difference.

Why are you so desperate to see into their home? Do you fancy her bloke??

Christ, are we doing the cha cha slide or something? Reverse! Reverse!

Yabu. I have a projector in my livingroom and you bloody do need the curtains shut or you can't see it. Plus I don't want nosey twats peering through my window Hmm

OnlyLovers · 21/01/2015 14:54

Surely a reverse?

If not, though:

YABU. Get a life. Leave them alone.

Germgirl · 21/01/2015 14:54

Ooh Goring why Lewisham? I love near there. Is there something going on?

stealthsquiggle · 21/01/2015 14:55

I open the curtains in any room which I happen to be in during daylight hours. Given that I am often out all day, in the winter that often does not include the sitting room. If there is no one there to need/use the daylight, what is the point of letting all that heat out?

YABU. But you know that.

cocostrawberry · 21/01/2015 14:55

Not a reverse, although clearly I am bu as no-one has agreed with me, so maybe I won't ask outright. But I will still find it annoying everyday and you have to admit closed curtains do look scruffy!

Er, no.

Scruffy curtains (holes/dirty) look scruffy. Closed, per se? No. Sorry.

Sychnant · 21/01/2015 14:57

Wow. If that's all you have to worry about... neighbours leaving their curtains closed. Nightmare... Hmm

MrsTerryPratchett · 21/01/2015 14:58

You sound like my DM. Bless her, she thinks she knows what is right and proper for everyone else.

My living room curtains are closed all day long. Only DH opens them. So there!

BumWad · 21/01/2015 14:58

They want to keep their raging sex parties a secret that's for aure

GoringBit · 21/01/2015 14:58

Germgirl there's a not entirely dissimilar-feeling AIBU thread about Sydenham that you might like to have a squint at. (Exciled Sarf Londoner here.)

GraysAnalogy · 21/01/2015 14:59

Scruffy? Confused

Jesus fucking christ I can't cope with the general public sometimes.
