AIBU to ask the neighbours to open the curtains?

A youngish couple with no children bought a house on our estate about a year ago. They don't get involved with any of the activities such as the summer bbq and basically seem to isolate themselves from the rest of us, their loss. However my main bug is that they NEVER have the living room curtains open and quite often leave the other ones shut also, today every single one of them are shut and I know they are home.

I've hinted a couple of times that it would be best for them to leave them open, the girl mumbled something about a projector and watching films, but they can't be watching films all the time.

AIBU to just point blank ask them to open the curtains during the day, it really depresses me to look across to their house with all the curtains closed, it doesn't look inviting and it looks odd compared to the rest of the estate, we all manage to open their curtains everyday, so why can't they? My DH thinks I'm BU and should just leave them to it but I think when it effects other people I have a right to say something?

If someone complained to me about my curtains being closed I'd make sure they were closed every day.

What an uptight complaintant

SqueezyCheeseWeasel · 21/01/2015 16:29

notso, "White, plastic front doors" really aren't naice !

Seff · 21/01/2015 16:31

I would love it if the neighbours were on MN and we could tell them to open their curtains and spend the whole day waving at the OP, whilst naked.

RaptorInaPorkPieHat · 21/01/2015 16:34

I think the OP needs to invoice them for everyday their curtains aren't open the regulation width. Grin

Last time our inlaws visited they came to the conclusion that I must have pnd, am not coping and mil should come and stay to care for the baby as the upstairs curtains and kitchen blinds were closed. Not sure why my husband's mental health wasn't questioned?

To be serious for a moment, I can understand why it can be a sign of depression, but it would have to be accompanied by other things.

JassyRadlett · 21/01/2015 16:42

I am clearly a slovenly and inattentive neighbour. I left the house half an hour ago and I have no idea whether the curtains of any of the neighbours are open or shut. I'm trying to think why that is - oh yes, I have more interesting things to think about.

That said, most days we are all out of the house from 8am until around 6pm. Those days, the curtains stay closed all day because the (well-insulated) house retains the heat better with curtains closed.

And also because, in the morning rush when it's dark outside, I have better things to do than run around flinging all the curtains open so that any bonkers neighbours won't get sad.

The only sure thing, OP, is that they're spending less on heating than you.

ZombieApocalypse · 21/01/2015 16:42

Bonkers. Placemarking.

JassyRadlett · 21/01/2015 16:43

I feel the need to add that our curtains have very neat and expensive blackout linings. Does that make it less scruffy and unacceptable, OP?

Ohfourfoxache · 21/01/2015 16:43

Even if it was a rural hamlet with 5 houses, it still wouldn't be any of op's business

googoodolly · 21/01/2015 16:46

This thread is all kinds of insane.

Aridane · 21/01/2015 16:53

OP is evidently barking or a troll

KingJoffreyObviouslyWatchesHol · 21/01/2015 16:53

My curtains are shut now.

Is dark and chilly.

Salmotrutta · 21/01/2015 16:55

Fabulous thread!

OP - do you judge how they hang their washing out?

I feel you should check and report back to us.

All items arranged by type, size and socks hung by the toes.

Then if it's not right I could send my mum round who does a nice line in judging washing

Salmotrutta · 21/01/2015 16:57

My curtains are half-open as its not quite dark and I have lights on.

Am I common?

Germgirl · 21/01/2015 16:57

Why would anyone troll about curtains?!!
Anyway, my curtains are often shut all day because I don't go into the living room before I go out in the morning & it gets dark before I get home.
Op, if you complained to me about my curtains being closed I'd nail sheets of hardboard over my windows. Just to piss you off.

Salmotrutta · 21/01/2015 16:58

Not hardboard Germ.

An old bed sheet.

Much better

WrappedInABlankie · 21/01/2015 16:59

I haven't opened my upstairs blinds in 4 months I'll be getting curtains an s
Keeping them closed to.

GallicIsCharlie · 21/01/2015 16:59

I forgot to congratulate RowanMNHQ on "this whole thread has been most enlightening on the important area of curtain etiquette" Grin

Indeed!

sophie150 · 21/01/2015 17:00

It's freezing today and my windows are draughty. Curtains are staying firmly closed!

KingJoffreyObviouslyWatchesHol · 21/01/2015 17:04

Just to throw the cat amongst the pigeons...

...Our upstairs curtains are never closed.

What do you make of that?

Plomino · 21/01/2015 17:04

Damn ! My neighbours blinds haven't been opened since the house was built in 2007 ! I shall hustle round there tomorrow tout suite to tell them to expose their decor for the worlds censure !

AmantesSuntAmentes · 21/01/2015 17:05

I haven't got any curtains Sad

I do have one blind though and it's at permanent half mast wonders what this symbolises in the weird world of window monitors.
