My daughter (6) the other day she came home singing the song Timber (Kesha). Apparently the teacher has been playing it regularly in her class.

I am fuming mad, the lyrics are not ok for young children! AIBU?

Here is an extract

â??Let's make a night, you won't remember
I'll be the one, you won't forgetâ??

[Ke$ha]
It's going down, I'm yelling timber
You better move, you better dance
Let's make a night, you won't remember
I'll be the one, you won't forgetâ??

â??The bigger they are, the harder they fall
These big-iddy boys, are dig-gidy dogs
I have em like miley cyrus, clothes off, twerkin in their bras and thongs, timber
Face down. booty up, timber
That's the way we like to what, timber
Iâ??m slicker than an oil spill
She say she won't, but I bet she will, timberâ??

â??End of the night, it's going down
One more shot, another round
End of the night, it's going downâ??

YANBU - I'd be horrified and definitely saying something.

FoxgloveFairy · 21/01/2015 03:07

Six year olds? Shock

snorkyorky · 21/01/2015 05:00

Shock I would be raising this with every level of management possible.

isitsnowingyet · 21/01/2015 05:40

You have to ask?

Very funny - I did laugh a bit.( And no, it's not appropriate, and I guess my reaction isn't eitherGrin)

HighwayDragon · 21/01/2015 06:26

Doesn't sound any different to the spice girls songs I was singing as a kid?

insancerre · 21/01/2015 06:38

Its just words to a 6 year old
Tbh its just words to me too.
I don't even follow the meaning
What's felling trees got to do with anything?
I can think of plenty of worse songs

PotOfYoghurt · 21/01/2015 06:41

There's a clean version without any swear words or the rap, that could be the one they're playing.

Iggi999 · 21/01/2015 06:45

He likes to have sex with her face down and "booty" up? She says she song but I bet she will?
It's not just that it's about sex, but it's about getting someone drunk and getting them to change their mind and have impersonal sex with you.
I can't think why a teacher would play this, it's not exactly subtle is it?

Yanbu! Why would a teacher be playing this regularly? I wouldn't be so bothered if it was a one off at a school disco but I'd asume it's being played in class from the op and I'd raise the issue with the head teacher.
I thought the lyrics were "He's going down, I'm yelling timber" Blush

Longdistance · 21/01/2015 06:56

Yanbu.

I've just said no to my dds rainbow leader, about dd dancing to Meghan Traenors, all about the bass song. It has swear words in it, and she was looking for the radio version ie; without the swearing.

I'm sure there's plenty of songs out there that don't have sexual connotations to it.

NoArmaniNoPunani · 21/01/2015 07:12

I don't think 6 year olds will understand the meaning. I used to be obsessed with the musical Grease at that age. It's only with my adult understanding of the lyrics that I feel slightly horrified about the filth I was singing along to.

There's a good chance the teacher doesn't understand the meaning of the lyrics either.

KirjavaTheCat · 21/01/2015 07:19

Face down. booty up

I'd worry about the teacher's ability to read between the lines if they didn't get what that means!

MidniteScribbler · 21/01/2015 07:28

Even teachers make mistakes some times. A number of years ago I heard a song a few times on the radio, although didn't think too much of it. But then we were having a planning meeting and talking about doing a unit on manners (some of ours needed the reminder lol) and I piped up with 'what about that song that's been playing on the radio, the one about saying thank you'. Cue some confused looks. After I sang it to them, they pointed out to me that it was actually Lily Allen's 'Fuck You'. Blush

CalamitouslyWrong · 21/01/2015 07:32

DS2's reception class did a dance to this song so heard it loads. Neither DH nor I (nor DS for that matter) noticed the lyrics.

TickleMyTitsTillFriday · 21/01/2015 07:42

I've heard it a million times and have never noticed the lyrics. I would therefore find it difficult to get worked up about, I think if you listen carefully to the lyrics of alot of songs they sound quite dodgy.

I certainly would have more of a problem with them being played 'it's all about that bass'

loudarts · 21/01/2015 07:49

I personally would not have a problem with it, when I was six I was always singing along to songs and not really registering the meaning of the lyrics. But if you are upset with it yanbu to talk to the teacher

GratefulHead · 21/01/2015 07:50

Hahahaha..Midnite, that's fabulous....can you even bear to imagine the response if you had actually not realised and played it to your class. Doesn't bear thinking about Grin.

GratefulHead · 21/01/2015 07:52

What's wrong with "All About That Bass"? genuine question, I understand it as being about not worrying about your body shape and weight etc. that people love you no matter what...unless they are shallow.

Then again....thinking of the lyrics....hmm...yeah on balance you are probably right

Shockers · 21/01/2015 07:53

I have heard that song so many times and have never listened to the words properly. The children in my class (yr 6) all start to jump around when they hear it (we also had music playing in the class on the run up to Christmas) because it has a catchy tune.

I've just asked DS2 (14) what it's about and his reply was, "Er... dunno... something to do with lumberjacks. It's one of those country songs that people dance in lines to... innit."

I did complain about that fast food song that seemed to be advertising Mc Donalds, KFC and Pizza Hut when DD was at primary school. They used it in PE to perform a dance routine!

ssd · 21/01/2015 07:58

its not appropriate for a 6 year old in the classroom, but they will hear worse or similar in the shops/car radio/home/you name it
its probably just words to her

ssd · 21/01/2015 07:59

and I hate to tell you but there will be someone in her class with a big brother/sister who will eventually tell them what these sorts of songs mean....

kaykayred · 21/01/2015 07:59

I would say there is an enormous difference between children picking up lyrics like this from the car radio, etc, and a professional teacher deliberately playing it within her class. I would be pretty livid.

Are kids not obsessed with that "Let it Go" song anymore?
