My daughter (6) the other day she came home singing the song Timber (Kesha). Apparently the teacher has been playing it regularly in her class.

I am fuming mad, the lyrics are not ok for young children! AIBU?

Here is an extract

â??Let's make a night, you won't remember
I'll be the one, you won't forgetâ??

[Ke$ha]
It's going down, I'm yelling timber
You better move, you better dance
Let's make a night, you won't remember
I'll be the one, you won't forgetâ??

â??The bigger they are, the harder they fall
These big-iddy boys, are dig-gidy dogs
I have em like miley cyrus, clothes off, twerkin in their bras and thongs, timber
Face down. booty up, timber
That's the way we like to what, timber
Iâ??m slicker than an oil spill
She say she won't, but I bet she will, timberâ??

â??End of the night, it's going down
One more shot, another round
End of the night, it's going downâ??

It's the skinny bitches bit in all about that bass. Even if the song is about feeling comfortable with your body that bit undermines the whole sentiment. And I say that as a voluptuous woman...

manicinsomniac · 21/01/2015 08:13

If it was for dance I wouldn't mind.

But for general classroom playing it seems gratuitous and inappropriate.

I agree that the kids won't think anything of it though.

When I was 6 the lyrics to my favourite song were 'Sally's in the alley and Nancy's in the lane. Emily is pregnant and wonders who to blame.' Shock

Marmiteandjamislush · 21/01/2015 08:18

YANBU!! It's at times like this I wish we had a vomit emoticon. Is the teacher very young? If she listens to this music a lot, perhaps she's stopped 'hearing' it, IYSWIM.

SeeChooJimmy · 21/01/2015 08:22

I don't see this as an issue, I've never got worked up over song lyrics as half the time they won't understand them anyway. Mind you timber is dd3 (2) favourite song, dd1&2 listen to nikki minaj also so I may just be more relaxed about these things.

Bilberry · 21/01/2015 08:25

That the kids don't understand the lyrics doesn't make it appropriate to play in school - complain.

I know my Korean friend got upset about the omnipotence of 'gang-nam style' as her dd understood Korean...

Bilberry · 21/01/2015 08:25

Omnipresence not omnipotents

My goodness, im astounded that every parent wouldn't be up in arms about this song being played by a teacher in school - even the 'cleaned up' version is supporting misogynistic rape apologist cr@p and id be in the headteacher's face about it pdq. If I attended a dance involving my 6 yr old dd dancing to this type of song i'd be utterly appalled. Schools are suppose to uphold a better standard than what older kids might be listening to in their own time....

arethereanyleftatall · 21/01/2015 08:51

Yabu and frankly ridiculous.
Complain to the teacher, fuming? I think teachers have enough proper stuff to worry about. It's a bloody song that no 6 yr old will have a clue what the lyrics are about. If they do understand them then something is seriously wrong.
For reference, I live in a very naive area and have a 6 year old. That song has been pm late day every party she's been to, and every school disco and the kids jump around to it.
Seriously, don't sweat the small stuff.

arethereanyleftatall · 21/01/2015 08:52

Pm late dated = played at

arethereanyleftatall · 21/01/2015 08:54

Dd thinks the lyrics in gangham style is 'woooh, sixty ladies'

GokTwo · 21/01/2015 09:00

I wouldn't use a track like that in my class and if I did I would be torn off a strip! I agree it probably is just words to little ones but I still wouldn't play it. It is actually very hard to find pop type tracks without rude words in. One of the few I know and use is Firework by Katy Perry.

queentroutoftrouts · 21/01/2015 09:02

I'm a bit puzzled at some of the hysteria on this thread tbh

ChocLover2015 · 21/01/2015 09:04

I have jut listened to it online and i doubt they would even be able to pick out the lyrics. All i got was 'tim-beeerrrr' and 'you won't remembeeeerrrrr'
What lyrics was your kid singing?

skinoncustard · 21/01/2015 09:06

I wonder in what context this is 'being played regularly in class' .
In a 6 year olds world, Christmas and parties, 'down time' in class etc is a lifetime ago.
It's not suitable for children but in all honesty nearly every popular song is wrong in some way , and the words mean nothing to youngsters.
They usually only pick up the catchy one liners. ' I'm yelling timber' 'Let it go, let it go '
It's not as if they are being taught it for the school show . ( I hope )

Gen35 · 21/01/2015 09:19

Even so, I'd question that teacher's judgment for playing it. Agree lots of pop songs have unpalatable lyrics, I'd prefer swearing over this song. the only place it should be played in a school is in an English comprehension class for teenagers where its acceptability was up for discussion.

NeedABumChange · 21/01/2015 09:25

It's just a crap song anyways so I'd be a bit miffed because of that.

And yeah it's hideous when children copy the video advance routines to songs like this.

Davsmum · 21/01/2015 09:48

I haven't a clue what the lyrics are on about - they are rubbish. I don't understand why it is played regularly in the class. Is it just background music??!

GetLow · 21/01/2015 09:58

I'm not a prude but I do think school staff should look at lyrics properly before repeatedly playing pop songs to very young children.

I loved 'Like a Virgin' as a kid (had no idea what it meant!) but my teacher didnt play it on loop in the class room, FGS!

'All about the bass' is repulsive to me, by the way. It isnt empowering at all. The lyrics say something about her mum telling her that BOYS like a bit more junk in the trunk or something. I dont want my daughter to grow up thinking that what boys think about her figure is what matters. I dont like the message that being 'curvy' or 'real' is better than being skinny. The focus on female bodies in society is worrying full stop, and not something I want to my DD to be exposed to at the age of 6 yrs....it will come soon enough, sadly.

Greywackejones · 21/01/2015 10:19

Depends. There's various versions.

It really depends which version is played. Just because one version has adult lyrics does NOT mean that's the version the teacher used.

How about you ask rather than do the Internet version of a DM sad face?

ClaudetteWyms · 21/01/2015 10:22

YANBU at being pissed off that it's been played in class - wtf are they thinking?! I would complain to the school.

"All about the bass" is also awful, about having a "booty" for boys to hold onto Hmm and dissing "skinny bitches" (nice).

crazylady12 · 21/01/2015 10:33

When I picked my daughter up aged 2they were often dancing round with the kids singing inappropriate songs I was horrified kids are sponges they pick up on anything my 5 yeR old still loves nursery rhymes thank god

diddl · 21/01/2015 10:37

"clothes off, twerkin in their bras & thongs!"

Teabiscuits · 21/01/2015 11:06

Some of the song lyrics I used to belt out as a primary school aged kid -

'Sex bomb, sex bomb, you're my sex bomb, and baby you can turn me on'

'I'm horny, horny horny horny'

'Let me lick you up and down'

All horrendously inappropriate but we didn't have a clue what they meant.
I really don't like a lot of song lyrics at the moment because so many of them can be really derrogative, but I would never ban DCs from hearing them or change the radio because it would just draw attention so something that would most likely otherwise go over their heads.

I agree that it's not the best choice of song to play deliberately in a classroom though.

ChippingInLatteLover · 21/01/2015 11:18

Why is any song being played constantly in a classroom?

If it was at a party I wouldn't care, as others have said, the lyrics go straight over their heads and mine but I'd be livid if they were 'learning' it for anything.

peggyundercrackers · 21/01/2015 11:19

the sad thing is 90% of pop music probably has inappropriate lyrics or videos/images for smaller kids - how do you stop them seeing it, its on the radio, tv, magazine adverts, cinema etc. etc. its everywhere.

I think the images are worse for the kids than the music itself, to smaller kids they are just words and mean nothing.
