We've splashed out on a very fancy double buggy to accommodate ds1 (3) and ds2 (5 weeks) and I'm just not sure where to keep it. Unlike our old one it doesn't fit easily in the car (it fits, but in pieces which have to be assembled) and in our new house, unlike our old, the car is round the corner so it's difficult to walk round and get it all out/assembled on my own with both kids. It's easier for me if its assembled and sat in the hallway. (We also have a garage but it has a damp problem so I don't want buggy in there... Also it's the same distance from the front door as the car so same problems re kids).
My dfolks think its a bit grim to keep it in the hallway (dogshit/germs from the wheels) and dh finds it unaesthetic there:-) but AIBU to decide its the best option?

"I had a donkey and had to keep it in my hallway" Grin if you don't know your prams that's pretty funny, made my day.

I agree that you should get a carpet cover for the hall, one of those plastic rugs that can be cleaned and some abtibac spray for the wheels.
I used to keep mine in a pram cupboard we had in our old flat in London, but still cleaned the wheels because the streets were discusting. Now we've moved it's either in the car, which is a pain because its an old frog, so folding mechanism is sticky or it's in the utility room, but I have to take it through the house to get it there. Luckily we don't have the problem of dog shit or spit on the streets here, which is ironic because there's a pack of stay dogs in the city but they don't shit in the streets or attack people, so no one cares.

I have a Maclaren Techno xlr, it's folded and propped up in the corner of our open porch.

ireallydontlikemonday · 19/01/2015 11:57

I'd quite like a real donkey as a novel way of carting the kids about:)

Our porch is outdoor op but very sheltered so it doesn't get wet. DH put a thing on the wall that I can fix a bike lock on it.

GlitterKandinsky · 19/01/2015 11:58

I usually keep one in the hall and one in the boot of the car.

I'm ok with clutter though. And a bit of mud doesn't bother me, it can be cleaned up easily enough once dry. If there's dog shit on the wheels I remove the wheels and wash them under the outside tap and leave in the garden.

Do you have a cupboard or space under the stairs to store it in?

PurpleCrazyHorse · 19/01/2015 12:04

Luckily no double buggy here but we had to keep our Quizzy Zapp in our lounge as our house was tiny. However we bought it because it was small and even measured the space we were going to park it in. We had laminate flooring downstairs so no need to wheel on carpet.

Now we have a slightly larger house, but no hallway really (less than 1m square!), I don't want to store it in the dining room (no obvious spot) or the lounge (carpeted). Therefore, I'll probably get one of those plastic bike/garden storage sheds and erect it outside our back door. We do have a garage but it's further to go to get it. Luckily the back door is behind our side gate so very secure.

Also, it's only a short period you'll need a buggy for, you're not committing to a piece of permanent furniture in your hallway. You will no doubt find that given a year or so, you can switch to a smaller single buggy if your DH really doesn't like the large double one parked in the hallway. DD was totally out of her buggy by 3.5yo.

PrimalLass · 19/01/2015 12:22

Under the slope of the stairs in the hall, or in the car.

PrimalLass · 19/01/2015 12:26

I had a donkey and I had to keep it in my hallway. Drove me mad.

Mary - is it you? How was Bethlehem?

Sorry, couldn't resist.

curiousgeorgie · 19/01/2015 12:29

In my last house I had a similar situation to you with the car being round the corner and our pram was in the hall... But our hall was so narrow it blocked the front door (skinny Victorian house.) I used to have to pull it back into the tiny kitchen and squeeze around it to open the door (inwards) and squeeze it through.

Our new house has a huge hallway. It's in there and I'm so bloody happy about the ability to open the front door without moving everything out of the way... It's changed my life Wink

CrushedVelvet · 19/01/2015 12:29

Ours lived in the side of the dining room for years cause there was nowhere else to put it, and sometimes DS would be napping in it - going for a pram/buggy ride was the only way to get him to nap. Had a special protective mat. If wheels particularly dirty, they'd get disinfected outside the door before bringing it in. We coped, but am glad it's gone now!

We keep our out and about nipper in the hallway. It's a bit of a pain, but it's not too bad. We need to get the hallway carpet replaced though!

WhyNotSmile · 19/01/2015 12:36

In the hall, slightly in the way of everything, but no other option really! I figure DS well be in a buggy soon, and the pram can maybe be moved somewhere to be assembled only when needed!

WaxyBean · 19/01/2015 12:36

In the hall on a hard plastic mat from idea. So much more convenient if it's already assembled.

Siarie · 19/01/2015 12:37

Ours is going to live in the hall which is big, but if it winds me up I'm putting it in the spare toilet joined to the hall. We never go in there and the pram could fit easily and still allow anyone who does happen to use it to still do so without moving anything.

dalmatianmad · 19/01/2015 12:41

Have you already bought it? If perhaps reconsider, surely a 3 year old won't be in it much longer anyway? My just 2 year old dd walks everywhere, takes forever but can't cope with trying to force her into a pushchair!

SamiBE · 19/01/2015 16:14

My donkey is currently being used in mono mode until dd2 arrives in the next couple of weeks. I keep it in the hall way but this won't be an option in duo mode so will keep carry cot in living room

OOAOML · 19/01/2015 16:28

If there's room to get past it in your hall I would keep it there. I never had a double, but we always kept our pram in the hall of our flat. Wouldn't keep it in the common stair as there was a phase of the lock getting damaged and people getting in and various really horrible things happening. No car. I used to check the wheels before carting it up the stairs in case of dog shit, but although I am really fussy sometimes just reasoned that other dirt/dust/germs was just the same as would be on our shoes.

AnythingNotEverything · 19/01/2015 16:54

Ours is in the hall (not huge but big enough if the shoes have been put away) or in the boot (we have a Zafira).

A friend who dog walks daily has a lockable bin store she keeps hers in in the garden.

littlejohnnydory · 19/01/2015 17:46

We kept ours in the hallway the last time I used one. At the moment I'm using a sling and the pushchair is in the garage. Part of the reason that 8 week old dd has never been in it is that going to get it and bringing it through the house is a total pita.

littlejohnnydory · 19/01/2015 17:49

Oh, my dd will be 3 in April and she also walks. I do have a very lightweight umbrella fold thing under the stairs that I could use for her but we walk a lot as I don't drive and she's fine. I second rethinking buying a huge buggy for a three year old.

Runningupthathill82 · 19/01/2015 17:51

Kitchen. We live in a two-up, two-down, so only choice is living room or kitchen. Kitchen obviously preferential, though it is a pain having to shift it through the living room every time I want to use it.
Stopped me getting a buggy I couldn't easily lift with DS in it, though.

Pengyquin · 19/01/2015 17:51

Surely a 3 year old doesn't need a pram? My just turned 2 year old barely gets in our double. The 9 month old needs it though. Not sure I would even have bothered buying a double !

Sorry, not helpful!

Purplepoodle · 19/01/2015 17:57

I have Phil and teds so fits in boot of zafira with one seat up without dismantling. Hate having it in the house as it's in the way in our small house. If didn't have the car I would be buying a storage box for backyard

Purplehonesty · 19/01/2015 18:00

I too would say send it back a 3yo doesn't need a pram.
Or store it in the garden shed (which you are going to need to build)...!

Purplepoodle · 19/01/2015 18:02

My 3 year old (4 in may). Still jumps on our double if we have done lots of walking. He can cope with two school runs but not the third so out comes the buggy
