to think they shouldn't have named the man driving the bin lorry in George Square?

I think he deserves privacy. Poor poor man only went to his work, he didn't mean to cause an accident.

Not everyone on MN knows everyone elses background and why they feel the way they do.

FlossyMoo · 18/01/2015 14:07

YANBU OP.

Naming this man does not change the tragedy. It will only cause more pain for all those involved. The newspapers that have named him should be ashamed and have more respect for those who lost their lives and for those who have lost loved ones.

SoupDragon · 18/01/2015 14:08

There is more than one sort of grief.
Sympathy is not a finite resource.

IAmNotAPrincessIAmAKahleesi · 18/01/2015 14:08

YANBU

I have nothing but sympathy for that poor man, of course he will be grieving- I am stunned that anyone could think otherwise

Tinkerball · 18/01/2015 14:09

Just asking. I really don't think Acky has been rude or horrible at all, if someone has been affected personally by this tragedy or issues of loss associated with it then others won't necessarliy know this, or indeed need to know. However this can leave others questioning reactions that suggest a lack of sympathy for the driver involved.

expatinscotland · 18/01/2015 14:09

The newspapers have been very irresponsible and may well cause this man and his family physical harm. And now it cannot be undone. How they are allowed to do this without being charged with anything is beyond me.

It's not been made public what happened, Chippin, that is a fair point.

ShellyF · 18/01/2015 14:13

He collapsed and passed out at the wheel according to reports. Nothing to suggest anything other than illness.Three other people in lorry were behind and could not get to the brake.

ShellyF · 18/01/2015 14:13

This was from Daily Record.

Bowlersarm · 18/01/2015 14:15

If he wasn't at fault for the accident I can't see why it would matter naming him. Everyone will have the utmost sympathy with him, surely.

FannyFifer · 18/01/2015 14:15

The Daily Record & Sunday Mail are a shower of bastards!
Door stopping that poor mans daughter, disgrace of a newspaper.

Annunziata · 18/01/2015 14:16

There are some right nutters out there though.

What could they be charged with, expat?

OP posts:
browneyedgirl86 · 18/01/2015 14:16

Yanbu there is no need for this to be made public!

ShellyF · 18/01/2015 14:18

Sadly not everyone is reasonable Bowlers. There will be a minority of people, more than likely unaffected by the tragedy, who will blame.

TheOnlyOliviaMumsnet · 18/01/2015 14:19

Ahem
Guidelines are here.
This is bound to be an emotive subject, and indeed this thread may not end up staying tbh, we are still looking into it BUT in the interim PEACE and love.
Thanks ever so

Tinkerball · 18/01/2015 14:19

Bowlersarm whilst thinking this would be great it is naive to think that there might be people out there who don't overeact, get things wing, stupid etc...this is putting this man and his family at risk. Remember the paediatrician who's house was attached because a stupid hysterical mob thought she was a paedophile?

Redglitter · 18/01/2015 14:20

Chippin it's been said by numerous witnesses from the hour it happened that he was seen slumped over the wheel of the lorry. That's never been in question. The Daily Record report also says he took ill

FannyFifer · 18/01/2015 14:20

Why would the thread end up not staying Olivia?

Bowlersarm · 18/01/2015 14:20

That's really sad then, poor guy, assuming the collapsing report is correct.

Tinkerball · 18/01/2015 14:21

Get things wrong I meant! And attacked not attached obviously!

FlossyMoo · 18/01/2015 14:22

Bowlers His daughter has already been harassed by the press. Some people will sadly turn on this man and most probably make his life hell. He and his family will have to move as I assume his home will be targeted.

Naming this man will only cause more pain. There has already been enough.

ShellyF · 18/01/2015 14:22

Why would you remove the thread?
Most people are discussing rationality .
Unless there are legal reasons not to?

expatinscotland · 18/01/2015 14:24

Chipping is right, though, in that there has been no official statement about how the tragedy occurred.

LadyGlen · 18/01/2015 14:25

YANBU. It is a terrible thing to have to cope with.

My DH collapsed suddenly and sadly, died. There was barely a moment between him saying he had a terrible pain and him becoming unconscious.

I thought afterwards thank God he wasn't driving because others could have been injured or killed if he had been in charge of a vehicle.

There but for the grace of God... Any one of us could collapse at the wheel and be responsible for a tragedy.
