to think that telephoning someone you don't really know at 10pm is a bit off?

Someone rang me last night to ask if my DH (who is away) had read an email sent by his wife Confused. Apart from the fact that I couldn't possibly tell whether DH had read it I was annoyed that he rang at 10pm, having always believed that 9.30pm was the cut off for calls unless you know the person really well. AIBU? Or old fashioned?

YANBU.

It is a pet peeve of mine. Very rude of that man and I hope you told him so.

mmgirish · 15/01/2015 15:32

I wouldn't call anyone at 10pm! YANBU. A call at that time would probably wake me up!

SaucyJack · 15/01/2015 15:33

Depends if it was important I guess.

Has she just told her husband she's leaving him for your DH?

Inkanta · 15/01/2015 15:38

His wife??

ilovesooty · 15/01/2015 15:46

It sounds a bit bizarre whatever time it was.

fluffymouse · 15/01/2015 15:48

I'm interested too to hear on what is the consensus about cut off time for calls.

ALittleFaith · 15/01/2015 15:49

After 10pm I always assume it's an emergency! She sounds rather odd.

mamapain · 15/01/2015 15:52

I'm clearly in the minority but I tend to think of 10pm as being OK. I call my friends/acquaintances then and vice versa.

For me 10:30/11pm would signal something being wrong.

ireallydontlikemonday · 15/01/2015 15:52

If someone called our house at 10 it would wake us up and I would assume someone had died.

Apart from that though isn't it an odd thing to follow up an email with a call, to your house?

Gatekeeper · 15/01/2015 15:54

YANBU; I am in bed at that time so would be raging if anyone rang up then. I wouldn't be able to sleep afterwards either for thinking up one-liners I wished I'd said to convey just how enraged I was!!

diddl · 15/01/2015 16:10

YANBU.

9pm is my cut off time!

crazylady12 · 15/01/2015 16:17

I'd be more concerned on what the email said and how he knew your number

FightOrFlight · 15/01/2015 16:20

Same as PP's have said - I'd be more interested in the contents of the email and why her hubby was calling to ask if he'd read it than the time of night!

10.30pm is a cut-off point here for anybody other than family and close friends unless it's an emergency.

YANBU!

I would say 6pm is cut-off for work-related calls; 8pm for non-work but 'don't know very well' callers; 10pm for family/friends. Although my DM is a night owl and I know if I ring her up to about 1am, she'll still be up.

But yes, I do assume any post-9pm calls might well be Bad News.

FightOrFlight · 15/01/2015 16:25

OP - have you hacked his email account asked your DH yet what it's all about?

fatherpeeweestairmaster · 15/01/2015 16:26

Also, yes, I would want to know what that email was about too!

lemisscared · 15/01/2015 16:28

Now i need to know what the email is about, on the grounds you didn't ask, YABU

and the polite cut off is nine! :)

BeeRayKay · 15/01/2015 16:29

Haha I wanna know what the e-mail is about.

But yeah te only person to call after 9 in my house is my Aunty.

Fatalatomo · 15/01/2015 16:33

Very very good friends any time. very good friends poss family (depending on the circumstances) any time before Midnight

Anyone else half nine is latest latest but I'd start to swivel about wether to bother or wait until next day any later than 9

SantasLittleMonkeyButler · 15/01/2015 16:34

Yes, I also need to know what the e-mail is about! [nosey emoticon]

But, yes, very rude. An unexpected call after about 9pm at night would make me immediately think there was an emergency in the family.

Tobyjugg · 15/01/2015 16:38

I'd say 9.30pm is the cut off. After that it better be either (a) bloody important or (b) somebody I really want to talk to and whom I haven't heard from in a long time.

BuzzardBird · 15/01/2015 16:40

I'm afraid I would have been quite rude to him.

PastPerfect · 15/01/2015 16:42

Content far, far weirder than timing.

After 9:30 would get me worrying.

LineRunner · 15/01/2015 16:42

Is he a local councillor on the planning committee?!

Even so, rude.
