just had to lend bil money for heating and travel as he's on JSA after loosing his job due to mental health issues and his savings have dried up after almost a year.

He thinks that many weeks he spends more on travel than JSA pay! Thank god he has a family who can help him, I feel very sorry for people that don't have someone to help out.

We can't condone it I suppose which doesn't mean we condemn it.

Yes, that's exactly right.

It's the judging I hate, (not aimed at you, somebody else said it).
I had someone on here once tell me how disgusting entitled I am because I use some of dh's DLA to pay for Sky. He likes Sky Arts, he is in constant pain, he cannot walk and rarely leaves the house, but no, I'm an entitled bitch for considering Sky an essential for someone who is housebound. This was from someone happy to take money for running courses on how to help children with specific differences.
Hence high horses! Grin

Well, that is clearly ridiculous!

I don't particularly have any view on what benefits should be spent on. Particularly not dla - which is not so much a benefit as a simple sign of a civilised society (I hope.)

My only concern would be if someone were to state that JSA was 'not enough' and then to have enough for cigarettes and the like. As I say, draconian as I can be I am not inhuman and understand it's very difficult but just the same what can we as a country do - in effect give more money because there might be a parent with an addiction?

That wouldn't only be unfair to those in lower paid jobs but also in the long run deeply unhealthy.

Tricky one.

ilovesooty · 18/01/2015 12:32

Dawndonnaagain that's disgusting.

Dawndonnaagain · 18/01/2015 13:11

It's a difficult one, those with an addiction or those that don't do enough for their children are going to 'overspend' no matter how much they receive. Equally, we can't insist that they give up their addiction, that's no difference in the mooted project of 2013 when the government 'discussed' the possibility of sanctioning 'non compliant' people with depression eg. those that didn't take medication or engage with services.
So, all we're left with is to make it a liveable amount, which, as stated before, it currently is not.

WitchesGlove · 18/01/2015 14:01

Dawndonna-

You do realise plenty of people who work can't afford luxuries, right?

which is the point, people should not be able to be better off on benefits.

WitchesGlove · 18/01/2015 14:06

The addiction is to tabacco, not to branded cigarettes, so why can't the addiccted people just smoke roll ups? they only cost a couple of quid a week for loads.

But I see unemployed single parents puffing away Marlborough Lights into the pram.......

But, oh no, poor lambs, they can't help their adicction, so we all better pay for it, hadn't we?

ilovesooty · 18/01/2015 14:12

Just about everyone I work with who is on benefits smokes roll ups.
Witches you know all these people you've seen and their family and economic circumstances personally?

Namechangeyetagaintohide · 18/01/2015 14:14

How on earth do you know just by looking that they are single parents ?

People get a set amount of money. If they can budget and want to buy decent cigs then that's up to them.

WitchesGlove · 18/01/2015 14:17

No, these are people I know, went to school with and have on my Facebook.

So, no I am not speculating.

It's not a case of 'if they budget, it's up to them', the children will be going without something as a result!

ilovesooty · 18/01/2015 14:19

I can't imagine why you have people on your Facebook list that you obviously despise so much.

WitchesGlove · 18/01/2015 14:20

Incidentally, if the parent was on heroin, do you think they should get extra money because they can't help their addiction?

WitchesGlove · 18/01/2015 14:21

I don't despise them, it's the stupid governments fault for making them like that!

ilovesooty · 18/01/2015 14:26

You obviously despise their spending priorities.

And no one's talking about giving anyone extra money to accommodate addiction.

Dawndonnaagain · 18/01/2015 15:21

Witches I think anyone on JSA should get extra money. I am not advocating extra money specifically for fags or for addicts. But since you asked, I do suggest you look into the phenomen of self medication, how it happens, and specifically why it happens.
Oh, and how did the government make them like that, please, I don't quite comprehend what you're trying to say?

BigChocFrenzy · 18/01/2015 15:52

People on JSA should get free passes for all public transport, so that they can afford to keep "seeking" jobs.
That's not keeping them in a luxury lifestyle; it's giving them a better chance to get off JSA. Just economic sense.
I consider that a cost-effective use of my tax money.
Pointless making people unnecessarily miserable, when it means they stay on JSA longer

alittlethyme · 18/01/2015 21:31

JSA is so soul distroying, the longer someone is been on it the less likely they are to find a job and their mental health would suffer in many cases.
