AAARGH! Help me!

DS2 is a total metalhead - he has a long, thick mane of which he is hugely proud and close to which no scissors shall come close ... Unfortunately, following a holiday with little relatives, he also has head lice.

I've been chucking Hedrin at the little sods for a month, we've done for most of them but there's always a few left when I check ... The rest of us are clear and I don't think he's getting them from school as they look like young ones ... Please shower me with your accumulated wisdom for getting shot of the buggers before I spend his entire college fund on trying to bring about Louseocalypse!

Would a "nittygritty" comb and wet combing be totally out of the equation?

If you can wetcomb while they're still young, you can get on top of it. They have a two week life cycle so get him to do it every night for a fortnight to sort it

A ton of conditioner, a nitty gritty comb, wipe after each stroke. Do this every couple of days for a week or so-jobs a goodun'.

He has about three feet of hair and it's really thick so it would have to be wet plus conditioner or the comb doesn't go through ... We've got loads of those green combs you get with the Hedrin, are they the same as the Nittygritty ones?

Full marks solution, you put it in, leave for 15 minutes and then have to comb with the comb they give you, it's quite a good comb and easier on thick hair than the nitty gritty. The lotion is oily so you should be able to comb very thick hair. Comb and comb for ages and repeat a week later then another week or so they should be gone.

The nittygritty comb is about a tenner but well worth it. Wet the hair, absolutely douse it in conditioner then comb through without rinsing. Make sure you do the hair at the nape of the neck, behind the ears and the top of the forehead, under the fringe of he has one.

The Nittygritty comb was the only thing that worked on my son's hair. And he has very thick, chin length hair.

Nitty gritty is the best, I think you can even get it on prescription.

My daughters have thick afro hair and the nitty gritty is fab. Yes, should have said, it needs to be wet first.

Lyclear never worked for us

Do you guys have Dawn dish detergent there? Blue dawn is the secret here, wash hair with blue (must be blue) Dawn, put in conditioner, comb. Works every time.

Of topic, but similar, wash dog with blue dawn kills fleas.

There's also an electronic comb apparently which zaps them!

Nitty gritty comb is excellent but must be used on wet hair with conditioner, not too much conditioner though, just enough for it to slide through. You'll have to do that again after a few days and then again a few days after that just to make sure. But even once will help.

Lyclear is rubbish. Hedrin is ok and the silicone makes your hair nice and soft after.

I had waist length hair as a teen and it was a nightmare when my younger siblings were at primary.
The only way in the end was to use the treatment. then everyday wet and use a lot of conditioner with the nit comb every day after school section the hair do it bit by bit then start again.

Do this every day until no more can be found then when you think you've sorted it use the treatment again and a few days later do the wet hair and conditioner nit comb again just to be sure.

Any conditioner will work the cheapest stuff the better as you need so much of it.

He might need to comb his pubes too as his hair is so long sometimes they can get washed out in the shower and land there. Although as far as I'm aware they can't live there. Sorry I know this last bit is icky!

Ps, we have the electric comb - it's good for detecting them as it makes a noise if it hits one, but it doesn't kill them! many of the little buggers are only stunned, I combed them out with ours once - & then watched a couple of them get back up & walk away - Rosemary killed them though - tea tree didn't
