To think "put some fucking clothes on!"

or at least wrap a towel round yourself FFS.

I go to the gym five days a week, usually in the morning. Every single day without fail there will be people having a shower after their workout. I don't have a problem with this as the showers are in cubicles rather than out in the open.

My problem is is that after they've finished showering you can be sure they will then strut naked out of the shower over to the lockers without bothering to wrap a towel around themselves. They will then stand naked for a bit sorting their clothes and shit out before getting dressed. It's always the same people too.

AIBU to think they should at least wrap a towel round themselves? And get dressed as quickly as possible?

Nobody wants to see them naked!

I did mention it to reception but they just gave me a look like this Hmm.

I agree to a degree.

There are a few people in my gym that are very much ''look at me'' levels of nudity. I admit I'm very modest (Catholic upbringing and fat body!) and will keep my towel round me unless absoulely necessary, I acknowledge these are MY issues but some people do appear to love parading themselves.

One woman in particular I swear would go out naked if there wasn't the threat of arrest. She would have long conversations with other members in the duff. She would spend ages in front of the mirror doing her hair and make up with at best a pair of knickers on. Now drying your hair before putting your clothes on I can understand to stop your clothes getting wet (though I would have my towel on me) but I'm talking straighteners or even rollers on and a full face of make up. Surely that's not practical? Your hair and make up would surely get messed up by pulling clothes over your head, surely? One evening I came in, she was at the mirror preening herself. I went off, got changed, had a swim, a shower, put body lotion etc on, got dressed, quick going over with hairdryer (no make up as I was only going home to Corrie). This all took me about an hour. As I was leaving, she was STILL in front of the mirror in the nude preening herself.

spidey66 · 11/01/2015 10:05

Too many surelys. Apologies.

Sparklingbrook · 11/01/2015 10:06

Blimey spidey, I would be thinking she never actually set foot in the gym and just frequents the changing room for preening purposes.

Bartlebee · 11/01/2015 10:07

I bet the reception staff had a little giggle about your complaint.

I certainly am happy to be naked in the changing rooms as it's fairly unavoidable at times. I'll walk over to the showers naked as I don't want to wrap my clean, dry towel on my sweaty body.

There's a woman that sits naked at the mirror & straightens her hair. Now that seems unecessary.

spidey66 · 11/01/2015 10:15

Probably not, brook!

permacult · 11/01/2015 10:20

What kind of a gym is it? This has never happened at any of the ones I have frequented?

Ememem84 · 11/01/2015 11:00

uPDATE!!

Just returned from the gym. Had shower then wandered round changing rooms nekkid for a bit (not excessive prancing just for like 10 minutes). Was quite liberating.

silverjohnleggedit · 11/01/2015 11:07

In my youth I attended university in Sweden, after a night out the swedish students all jumped in the sauna, it won't surprise you to learn that the Brits kept their towels on, while all the other Europeans stripped off without concern.

permacult · 11/01/2015 11:09

Is this a new trend I should be looking out for then? I better start working out harder.

Showy · 11/01/2015 11:11

I couldn't walk around a communal changing room naked and I suppose if I'm completely honest, I'd find other people walking around naked a bit uncomfortable.

However, I know this is all about my feelings and upbringing and I would neither comment nor stare. There are lots of things that make me uncomfortable which are acceptable. It's up to me to deal with my feelings around it.

IsadoraQuagmire · 11/01/2015 11:12

I could understand if the OP was just complaining about people getting the locker area of the changing room wet because they hadn't dried themselves, that's bad manners.
But complaining about people being naked in a changing room is extremely odd. I go to the gym 6 days a week and, after my shower, I don't get dressed again until my body lotion has absorbed properly.
I can't believe you actually complained at reception! Shock

Showy · 11/01/2015 11:15

Oh and in terms of ascribing 'motive' to other people's choices, I wouldn't do that either. The language is very interesting on here. Preening and strutting etc. Presumably, naked gym goers are just comfortable with nudity. Even if they are strutting and preening, well who really cares?

It's like breastfeeding. I breastfed anywhere and everywhere and am a great supporter of it but accept that some people are made uncomfortable by it. Their issue. As long as they keep that to themselves fine. Thing is when they do talk/post about it, it's all flopping out a veiny tit and ostentatious breastfeeding isn't it?

BallsforEarrings · 11/01/2015 11:19

I like to use a cublicle if there is one, It's a little bit of quiet time tbh! I'm not so bothered if others are naked but I do prefer not to be myself - not sure why really I've never actually considered it!

specialsubject · 11/01/2015 11:20

time to dust this one off - Sam the American Eagle on the subject..

YABU, OP. It's a changing room where people remove one set of clothes, wash and put on another.

expatinscotland · 11/01/2015 11:21

This thread is hilarious!

You are a prude.

And unreasonable.

PacificDogwood · 11/01/2015 11:22

I agree it is really rather easy to Not Look if whatever is going on offends.

I understand that cultures in which little privacy is possible (think ancient Japan or African round huts) the skill of 'not seeing' (or in fact not hearing) is honed beautifully.

I would not like having somebody's back side right at my face level while they bend over Grin, but I'd see that more as their issue (not paid attention to who was behind them or how close they were) and would look aside or move.
I would certainly not report this to reception! Grin

SirChenjin · 11/01/2015 11:25

There are definitely preeners, no doubt about it. There was one at the gym I used to go to - gorgeous figure, very attractive. She used to strip off in the sauna when the rest of us kept towels on, walk about naked for far longer than was necessary - most people walk from the shower to the lockers, get stuff out, get dressed, dry hair, make up on, leave. She would spend ages walking from A to B to C, back to A again, over to the dryers, back to C - on and on it went. Occasionally she would put on a tiny g string. Felt like asking her if she would prefer us just to hold up score cards to acknowledge her toned gorgeousness level.

Nakedness in changing rooms is fine - no problem with it. Look at me and my gym honed body nakedness is boring though - put it away.

expatinscotland · 11/01/2015 11:26

I agree about body lotion sinking in, takes forever! I haven't been in a gym in years, but having been once married to a German man, lost whatever squeamishness around nudity I ever had (which admittedly wasn't much) pretty early on.

Gileswithachainsaw · 11/01/2015 11:26

Someone bending over and shoving their arse in your face and no concept of personal space is a problem regardless of being naked or clothed Grin

SirChenjin · 11/01/2015 11:27

You do get body lotion that doesn't take ages to sink in though - and dry oil, and in shower moisturisers

PacificDogwood · 11/01/2015 11:28

Oh, yes, there are preener, but I do find them rather amusing Grin

Giles, v true!

SirChenjin · 11/01/2015 11:30

They are amusing - I'm just not sure they see themselves as amusing Grin

expatinscotland · 11/01/2015 11:33

Dry oil doesn't do jack for some skin. I am going through the change of life and my skin is so dry! In shower moisturisers make the shower slick. And besides why should someone use products that don't work or that they don't prefer because some people are prudes in a changing room?

PacificDogwood · 11/01/2015 11:35

SirChinjin, no, they see themselves as goooorgeous and they are allowing us mere mortals a glimpse at their beauty! Grin

expat, get thee some Aveeno - really lovely.

SirChenjin · 11/01/2015 11:35

Fair enough - I just CBA to stand about for ages waiting for body lotion to sink in when there are alternatives, but each to their own.
