aibu to waste my time being annoyed by this?

aargh! went to dps dfs tonite and jokingly expressed we were going to get a puppy to be told no you can't you work all day.

Now i understand the basis of what he has said but...dps db has a puppy and works full time however they are in a 'professional' job so i guess it doesnt matter so much if you are a professional as if you are a professional you are definitely capable of owning a puppy? i have never heard anything but praise about them owning a puppy.

this is fairly lighthearted, we aren't actually getting a puppy or planning on one it it just something we wish for one day in the future it is more a vent at dfils stupid views on 'professional' status. or maybe my insecurities regarding that.

for what its worth if we were to ever get a puppy we would walk it morning and night and ensure people were available (family / friends or paid people) to pop in on / walk puppy throughout working day. my dp works 5mins walk from home too so could pop home most days on breaks. which is what dbil does.

i have poured myself a large glass of wine to get over the biting of my lip!

Maybe the DF disagrees with the DB owing a puppy when it's alone all day. Maybe the DF knows that the DB employs a dog walker.

Either way, he's right. Puppies shouldn't be alone all day, even if there is someone popping in briefly. They prefer proper company.

I don't really understand your issue, you just sound like you don't like any of these people.

I think you are projecting. If all DP's DF said was that you can't get a puppy because you work all day, I'm not sure how you read from that he is getting at your "non-professional" status. Actually if anything I'd take it the other way, that you are far too busy to be popping home to see to the dog, whereas DBIL isn't really doing anything very much.

oh no i do like them its not that i suppose i find their views very old fashioned and it stems from a lot of historical things that have been said in the past.

dbil has a puppy works full time as does his partner. they do have dog walkers and family popping in. if we had a puppy we would do the same. i felt the way it was said was that they can do that because they're a 'doctor' for example.

for what its worth i also have a good job i just dont have a degree. therefore should i want a dog walker etc i am more than capable of getting / affording one.

ive took it the wrong way havent i?

I think you know more about them than we do, and there's obviously a bit of history there.

You feel it was one rule for you and one for the db, which is why you are pissed off, I totally get that.

Just don't tell him stuff like that in future I guess unless you want to be judged.

You're absolutely taking it the wrong way. You have quite a complex!!

I would also tell you not to get a dog if you work full time - nothing to do with your education level

ahh i can see why it would look like i have a complex, maybe i do. when i think about it i suppose all the conversations ive been privvy to in their company about 'thick' people (people who didnt or couldnt go to university) hve left a bit of a scar.

as roland said tho i feel one rule for them another for us and the only difference i can see is they are a 'doctor'. glad got other peoples opinions as i did mean it lighthearted but can now see theres a bit more behind it.

they probably had more sense than to tell him they were getting one when i think about it Grin

thank you mumsnet, writing this down has helped and made me realise AIBU. totally taken it way more to heart than i should have. thank you ladies.
