to expect keep fit clothes to come in BIG sizes?

I am looking at you Sweaty Betty - your XL translates according to your website as a size 16 which is the average UK women's size. As you have a sale on I ordered 3 different styles, they arrived this morning and looked like they had shrunk in the wash when I tried stuff on.
Surely people who want to get fit should be able to get clothes that are comfortable and fit for purpose (that came out as a pun sorry.
Suppose I shall have to try dreaded M&S ....

neverputasockinatoaster I have a Blitz gi, quite heavyweight which I imagine would fit you. I think it is 170 so the legs are fairly short on me, a couple of inches above my ankles (am 5.5). Only problem is I bought it about 15 years ago! But it may give you hope...

BitOutOfPractice · 09/01/2015 16:26

I think thatlots of us were trying to say Chandler that not only is sports cl0thing simply not available in larget sizes. But that the sizes also come up very small. If you read the thread of other women's experiences, they are saying "I'm a 12 but I have to wear a 16 in Nike" or whatever. Add onto that the fact that women's exercise gear seems to be cut and desgned to be skin tight rather than comfortable, and it's a real problem to many women who aren't an 8 / 10 but who want to exercise. To whatever standard they want and are capable of. Clearly you think that anyone not running above "decent" standard is beneath your contempt

I'm sure you have many valid points to make but sadly you've just come across as a supercillious arse and got on people's tits. Not just mine

TheChandler · 09/01/2015 16:26

In that case, I would echo Sainsbury. Currently wearing a pair of running tights from there. Maybe not top end quality but pretty nice all the same. Or Aldi.

MaryWestmacott · 09/01/2015 16:41

OP - try sainsburys. If you are planning on changing your body shape, there's little point spending a lot of money on fitness clothes in your current size, because if you stick at it, you'll have dropped a dress size before you wear them out, you don't need stuff that's long lasting. Don't waste your money now. cheap stuff for now, more expensive when yo'uve reach your target weight and the fitness clothes will be used for maintenance exercise.

5madthings · 09/01/2015 16:55

I just get stuff from sports direct or wherever is cheap. Karrimor seems good, and comes in bigger sizes. I have their running leggings, 3/4 length in a size 12. They fit Ok and I am 12 in jeans..slimming to a 10. My.boobs are 32g or h so I wear an ultimate run bra that straps them down firmly, then a karrimor vest with more boob support, it is clingy and shows off lumpy bits so I wear a,looser fitting cotton vest from h&m or primark over the top.

Gap and primark and h&m all do cheapish sports clothing.

Btw I would be chuffed to bits if I could do 5km in 20 mins! Currently do it in 30 mins, 10km in an hourish and training for a half marathon, just running for fun and because it helps my sanity. I am not fast and prob never will be though I do do some hill and pace trainin to try and increase my speed.

SquirrelledAway · 09/01/2015 16:57

If you compare the Sweaty Betty size chart to the M&S size guide, the SB size 16 is equivalent to an M&S size 14 for waist and hips.

I've always found that I've had to go up a size from standard high street dress shops for sports clothing - whether it's Ron Hill runners or Nike golf trousers. I suspect the problem is that we've got used to high street vanity sizing and sports clothing hasn't followed that trend.

MeowImaCatfish · 09/01/2015 17:02

Chandler, has anyone ever told you you're a pig headed ignorant bully? Face it, the only reason you're posting is to tell all us fat obese hogs how unconditionally correct and pretty and perfect you are. It's not on. Listen to other people for once? Yes we're fat. Yes you aren't. We're just trying to find a NICE brand of sportswear where we can get fit and feel beautiful at the same time, rather than feeling like a Lycra coated balloon full of jelly. Jesus Christ! OP (and everyone else) havent posted so we can get hate from you about our already shabby body shape yno... I think OP (again and the rest of us) wanted reccomendations for nice PRETTY sportswear... Instead of bland, drab potato sacks. rant over....

KatoPotato · 09/01/2015 17:09

Guys, guys guy... can we all be friends and bond over the shared agreement that these are hilarious??

Anyone lend me £65?

bonkersLFDT20 · 09/01/2015 17:09

I am the odd one out then. Am a 10 according to tape measure, wear 8-10 size clothing, usually a 10 and buy 10 or size small sports clothes. Adidas works for me. Just got some Ronhill tights in a 10 and they're perfect, if a little short (I'm 5'7" or 5'8" or so).

SB 10 is what I'd go for.

MeowImaCatfish · 09/01/2015 17:12

GENIE PANTS!!! I remember me and a friend filled ours with stuffed toys and pretended to be the Michelin genie (we were about 11 7 lol)

SinglePringle · 09/01/2015 17:16

I'm the same Bonkers. I wear a 10 to 12 in 'normal' clothing and the same in fitness wear. I've never really understood / experienced the 'vanity' clothing thing - I'm the same size in High Street / Online stores (but buy clothes from Zara, Whistles, ASOS, Mango etc and don't shop in M&S, Face Face, White Stuff type shops so can't comment on them).

SquirrelledAway · 09/01/2015 17:26

But there definitely are variations in sizing between different stores - this is a useful website for checking out clothes sizes in different stores (I guess White Stuff and Fat Face aren't included as their sizes are all over the place).

SinglePringle · 09/01/2015 18:51

I'm sure. I've just never experienced it.

yelena7 · 09/01/2015 19:30

Depending on what you do, sport's clothes should be baggy or slim-fit to fit its purpose, as mentioned before...nothing new to add really, I might be a size 10, but I am definitely not a "stick insect" and am conscious of my belly fat and huge thighs, and while I'd love to hide them, it's a mission impossible during workout. When you run in a baggy t shirt, your tummy fat is still vissible, and if you wear a lose fit trousers, you're sure to find them either rolling between your tights or down to your knees. I had my share of sore skin, down to my thighs rubbing against each other while running and sweating, and trust me when I say- you'd rather sacrifice your image for those couple of hours, than walk around like a guy straight from western movies for another few days.

Smooshface · 09/01/2015 20:25

TheChandler is just mean :( I have 2 friends who do park run, one size 14 down from 18 from running 3 times a week and dieting, one already small sized. Both do that in over 20 minutes and are happy with their times thanks. And there are plenty of people that start off their running journey needing 14+ clothes, not unreasonable to want to get clothes to fit at start of exercise journey as well as the end!

I have some lovely leggings from matalan, had 'em years, they go up quite big too.

bonkersLFDT20 · 09/01/2015 22:21

OP, I have quite a few friends who like Thoosa They have a sale on.
Nice colours and a flattering fit. I found them a little short, but I am pretty tall.

StarlightMcKenzee · 09/01/2015 22:32

I went into Cotswolds to get a rainproof jacket for Walking in the rain and when I asked for a size 18 they told me that they don't stock them as they cater for 'fit' people! Hmm

EBearhug · 09/01/2015 22:38

Go Outdoors does big size walking gear - I even got waterproof trousers which fit (I'm a 22.)

Also, Decathlon might be worth looking at - they do swimming costumes big enough for me, so I imagine they would have running and gym kit in larger sizes. I tend to wear Sainsbury's leggings with a Lidl T-shirt when I do yoga.

SquirrelledAway · 10/01/2015 09:27

Cotswold Outdoor do quite a few larger jackets online - try Jack Wolfskin in XL (size 18-20).

skylark2 · 10/01/2015 09:59

When I started trying to get fit a couple of years ago I wore all baggy stuff because I was embarrassed. Hot and uncomfortable and gets in the way.

It took me about six months to work my courage up to buy proper tight fitting clothes, and they're so much more comfortable. And, really, nobody cares what you look like when you're exercising. Even the super-svelte are gasping, sweating and red in the face.

I do find I need size 14 rather than 12 in sports gear, but then I'm at the larger end of 12 in the first place. (No, I'm not a skinny person thinking I'm fat because I'm not a stick insect - I'm only 5'2 and well into "overweight" for my height.)

SteveBrucesNose · 10/01/2015 10:10

Ok any suggestions for bigger ladies golf wear? I had some 3/4 trousers from aquascutum but they've discontinued their golf range, Adidas occasionally have some in, and most of the call away golf skirts are pink. Tshirts are fine, there's usually some nice ones that fit, even with my norks, but bottoms? Very rare!

I'm a 16/18:20 depending on time of month cut of the clothes.

SquirrelledAway · 10/01/2015 10:23

Try Nike? They do up to size 18. Not cheap though.

CruCru · 10/01/2015 14:14

I am a Boden 20 and wear Nike. Expensive but I can get away with 2 running outfits in summer and winter, they dry quickly enough after washing.

Smooshface · 10/01/2015 14:16

Oh and the median 5k time for women is... 34 minutes. That's right - thirty four. So nice shaming by thechandler there on everyone not achieving 14 minute shave off an average 5k time for mere mortals
