To be worried about the Ched Evans threads on here

Sorry but this does seem like a witchunt to me. Many of the posters (who have signed the petition) obviously have little knowledge of the case. At one point a poster said Sports Direct would withdraw sponsorship if Evans was NOT signed and immediately others were vowing to boycott. Laughable and shows the level of thought before clicking. Online justice and the court of public opinion, not for me. As for expecting football, an industry corrupt from the very top (Sepp Blatter) and inherently sexist, to show any moral stance, get real.

OP posts:
Pagwatch · 08/01/2015 14:22

Gosh that must be frustrating Corky - that your whole thread is being misrepresented because of what one or two contributors are saying as a result of a misunderstanding

Grin [deathby irony]

Icimoi · 08/01/2015 14:28

corkysgran, my reference to you feeling sorry for yourself related to your statement "Will be back after work to see what other accusations people are making against me." - which does sound like a bit of a persecution complex.

Why do you still refuse to acknowledge that only around 3 or 4 people acted on that misunderstanding of the hypothetical situation that you keep harping on about; and that several more were and are proposing to boycott Sports Direct on the basis of an entirely accurate understanding that they had said they would continue to sponsor Oldham even if they signed Evans? It just mystifies me that you put so much emphasis on such a tiny little element of one thread and refuse to acknowledge that the vast majority of people condemning the proposal did so on the basis of full and accurate knowledge of the relevant facts.

vindscreenviper · 08/01/2015 14:30

I'm reading that the club owner and chairman has now quit over this (though how you just quit from owning a football club is a puzzle - give it to a charity shop perhaps?).
Convicted rapist Ched Evans really is toxic, I feel sorry for the Oldham fans who didn't ask for, and were very vocal about having, this shit-storm foisted on them by local bellends businessmen with more money than sense or decency.

OnlyLovers · 08/01/2015 14:34

It was the owner who wanted him signed, was it not?

So is that a flounce of epic proportions then? Grin

morethanpotatoprints · 08/01/2015 14:34

OP, a few hysterical randoms on Mnet will hardly make any difference.
Another club will sign him at some time and more hysteria will ensue.
This is only the second comment i have made but will be hiding all the other threads.
Todays news tomorrows chip paper. Grin As we say up here.

MistressDeeCee · 08/01/2015 14:43

Women are quite rightly annoyed and outraged. Seems a perfectly natural reaction to me. Im one who finds Chad Evans and the whole will he wont he be signed completely distasteful and if thats a witch hunt mentality I couldn't care less. There are far worse attitudes to have in this world - such as the violation of rape not being a big deal at all especially if the man is famous

YonicSleighdriver · 08/01/2015 15:14

More than, I don't believe that MNers made up more than maybe 1000 of the 80000 petition signatures. Are the 79000 non Mn signatories also hysterical (nice) randoms?

morethanpotatoprints · 08/01/2015 15:17

I have no idea Yonic
They aren't the ones on here are they? Confused

BeCool · 08/01/2015 15:18

from the OP's OP - "the court of public opinion, not for me."

So no need to "defend" yourself then surely OP?

Deux · 08/01/2015 15:27

I'm so glad that this scumbag has found himself in this situation.

I'd have no problem with him suffering his whole life for what he has done, in the same way the victim will. Where's her second chance, how can she just pick up her life where she left off?

I think poor ickle Ched could become a good role model - if you don't want your life in tatters then don't shag a semi conscious woman without her consent and tell yourself it's OK.

I'm staggered given that there are experts out there in reputation management/PR that CE's daddy in law hasn't managed to source them for his daughters rapist fiancé. Has anyone wondered just how much he's been pulling the strings? I wondered if CE ever thought, I'm just going to lay low for a bit but FIL is the one pushing him out there. No sympathy btw.

Maybe it's Karl Massey who's the one with the cognitive dissonance.

ArcheryAnnie · 08/01/2015 15:46

I've also seen the excellent point made that CE saying that the people hounding the victim aren't his supporters rings less than true when the website that his prospective father in law pays for eggs on the hounding (and is being investigated by the Attorney-General for doing so).

blueemerald · 08/01/2015 16:24

Looks like the deal is off....

SuburbanRhonda · 08/01/2015 18:27

BBC 6 o'clock news repeated the claims that employees of OA and their families received death threats and made no mention of the fact that Manchester Police say they have received no complaints.

Hmm
grimbletart · 08/01/2015 18:48

From BBC news website 10 minutes ago

"Greater Manchester Police's chief constable Sir Peter Fahy said his force would investigate threats to Oldham's staff and their families.

But GMP later clarified that no threats were currently being investigated as they had yet to receive any complaints. "

Babashka · 08/01/2015 19:20

I would ask the question why was Luke McCormick allowed back into football after killing two children. Why is Evans being pillioried when he's served his sentence?

LineRunner · 08/01/2015 19:25

I don't know why Luke McCormick was allowed back into football. I assume you mean professional football? Ask professional football that.

Ched Evans is a bit over half way through his sentence.

FreudiansSlipper · 08/01/2015 19:26

he has not served his sentence he has served half of his sentence

and I doubt many on here would agree with Luke McCormick still playing professional football

so what is the point you are making?

there was certainly a campaign to stop him playing

Toadinthehole · 08/01/2015 19:29

Compare Evans to Jonathan Aitken, who was mentioned on this thread earlier. Aitken was convicted for perjury. He retired from public life and has since undertaken very valuable work in relation to prison reform. He has fully admitted his moral turpitude and tried to redress the balance.

Evans, by contrast, simply doesn't seem to think he did anything terribly bad. He seems to think that it's OK to take advantage of vulnerable people. He does this on the basis of an absolute technicality.

This is what is getting up people's noses. Perhaps if he'd shown some true repentance he'd be back in a job by now.

An awful lot of people still don't "get" that what he did was wrong, and think they are in the majority in that view. Which is why it is so important to keep the pressure on

Babashka · 08/01/2015 19:30

OK pro or not he's playing football. Evans has been released, so why should he not go back to work?

FreudiansSlipper · 08/01/2015 19:33

ffs

he was convicted of rape, there are not many worse crimes

it is a violent crime one he has shown no remorse for (yes i know he is appealing)

footballers are in the public eye you have a responsibility when you are to those who look up to you

do you want your children to look up to a man like him

Babashka · 08/01/2015 19:35

Toad I agree he has shown no remorse, he was very wrong to do what he did, I'm trying to uderstand what people want him to do now.

LineRunner · 08/01/2015 19:36

He's not even appealing. He keeps asking for permission to appeal and getting refused.

LineRunner · 08/01/2015 19:37

His father in law to be offered him a job. Maybe he could work at that?

FreudiansSlipper · 08/01/2015 19:38

get a job where he is not in the public eye

not one where he is an influence to young children and young men

nauticant · 08/01/2015 19:39

There was all that racism present in football in the past. That means that making a fuss about it these days can't be justified.

As we all know, bad things tolerated in the past ties our hands completely against tackling them in the present. It is the very bedrock on which our civilisation is based.
