to think the decision made by Oldham Athletic today is the proof that professional football in this country lacks any moral integrity whatsoever?

  1. Morally, what they are doing is disgusting. They are completely disrespecting women sexually assaulted and raped by men in giving this man a job where he will be a role- model, hero-worshipped and idolised by thousands of people; young men and boys in particular. The message here is the crime of rape is easily dismissed by a short spell in prison and then you can go back and do whatever you like. In many jobs where a person has committed a sexual assault or rape, they are not ever allowed to work in a position again where they have contact with young or vulnerable people. Why is Ched Evans different?
  2. His fiance must feel humiliated. He has not denied his behaviour at all- his denial is that it constituted rape. He has disrespected and humiliated her by tomming around with other women, doing deals with his friends to pick up vulnerable women, share them for sex and video each other doing that. Instead of having some self respect and dumping him, she has humiliated herself further by 'standing by her man' as he disrespects his victim even more by refusing to apologise . Now her own father is humiliating her even further by bankrolling the moron so a football club will take the risk of employing him. Eh? WTF?
  3. It is beyond my comprehension that her father has no respect for his daughter and is rewarding the man who has treated her so badly, and also encouraging her in a relationsip with a man who sexually assaults or rapes women. It says a great deal about the kind of family she has grown up in - women are clearly treated like second class citizens and the possessions of men. I think she is stupid but feel very sorry for her.
  4. Will he be accepted at other football grounds as a player? I expect so- none of them would have the guts to say he is unacceptable to them and take the consequences of standing up for what is right.
  5. Will he be cheered at Oldham? I expect so- few fans will be prepared to make a stand against the club. The culture of football in England is such that moral standards are low in the professional game.

It will all end in tears- I have no doubt.

I do hope Oldham will come to understand how appalling their actions are.

I think today is the day I am fully convinced that professional football has no moral integrity whatsoever.

Thanks 1chance

Hope this means no boycott and that your DH's job is safe x

It was kinda worrying that 3 premier league managers were supporting the deal, and Harry Redknapp - 'he's done his time' err he's only done half!

muminhants · 08/01/2015 16:05

I think the problem here is that (a) he hasn't served his whole sentence (why not as he's not showed remorse or admitted guilt which I thought you had to do to get out early) and (b) he's not showed remorse (until a few minutes ago when I see on Twitter that he's finally apologised to the lady concerned).

IF he had shown remorse and IF he had served the full 5 years, would people have felt differently? Lets not forget that Leslie Grantham was an actor on Eastenders for years, having served time for murder.

As for encouraging our sons to play football, it's not a good thing to encourage and the level of hypocrisy is amazing. At the top echelons we have grown men hitting each other, swearing at referees and generally acting very unpleasantly while earning a lot of money. At the bottom we have 9 year old boys being thrown out of clubs for being rude to a coach or 17 year olds for not paying a fine for a minor infraction at a match (both happened in my son's club) So if you're a amateur child/teenager you have to behave better than a well-paid professional adult. As for the way FIFA goes on, and the treatment of the womens' game...

The vast majority of us are not knuckle scraping misogynists or rape apologists.

You just don't mind associating with them?

Icimoi · 08/01/2015 16:18

^Do you really we are all so morally bankrupt and lacking in critical faculties that we would idolise Ched Evans. I am a passionate football fan, I am also a feminist. The vast majority of us are not knuckle scraping misogynists or rape apologists.*

Good for you. But the fact is that young people do tend to idolise football players, and indeed their clubs make lots of money out of that. And they may do so because they buy the version of events on Evans' website without necessarily being morally bankrupt. After all, we know that Sheffield fans have been changing that Evans fucks who he likes.

AWholeLottaNosy · 08/01/2015 16:20

So he's finally apologised has he? I wonder if he's been advised to do that? Seems strange timing considering he's been protesting his 'innocence' all this time...

AWholeLottaNosy · 08/01/2015 16:24

Here it is, an 'apology' but still maintaining his innocence..?Hmm

Care to explain?

StarsOfTrackAndField · 08/01/2015 16:48

Ici well it is up to their parents to offer moral guidance and explain exactly why Evans isn't someone to admire, should he ever get anywhere a football club again. T

Andrewofgg · 08/01/2015 16:53

Apology my arse. I didn't do it but I'm sorry. Stick it, Ched.

Andrewofgg · 08/01/2015 16:54

muminhants You get out half way through on licence if you have behaved inside - even if you still deny the crime.

TheOfficialPan · 08/01/2015 17:01

on a SD sentence like his you get out at half way no matter how you have behaved inside.

Andrewofgg · 08/01/2015 17:06

You can lose remission for misbehaviour although not many do. You have to be persistent. I don't know whether RCE behaved in prison; probably.

YonicSleighdriver · 08/01/2015 18:50

I suspect RCE was a pretty "good" prisoner.

Andrewofgg · 08/01/2015 19:02

He certainly lost no remission. Out on the exact first possible day.

ApocalypseThen · 08/01/2015 19:06

Care to explain?

Sure. Soccer is a sport run, played and supported by knuckle dragging mysogynists. You may not be in that delightful cadre, but hanging around with their types doesn't suggest that much outrage for what they stand for.

Blistory · 08/01/2015 19:08

The rapist is now, according to the BBC, blaming mob rule and saying people would have lost their jobs due to funding withdrawal by sponsors and that wouldn't be fair.

Fair, you stupid bloody rapist, would be you not raping anyone.

Blistory · 08/01/2015 19:10

From BBC

Ched Evans has blamed "mob rule" for the collapse of his proposed deal to sign for Oldham Athletic.
Oldham had condemned death threats made during the negotiations to sign the convicted rapist, but said "significant financial pressure" was the reason the club pulled out of any agreement.
Evans said "the more radical elements of our society" had the "desired influence on some sponsors".
He said Oldham's new stand might not have been built had he joined.
In a statement on his personal website, the 26-year-old said: "The most significant issue for me was that owing to the threat of funding opportunities being withdrawn, which may jeopardise the building of Oldham's new stand, it would mean that workers would lose their jobs and others would be put at risk - that would simply not be fair."

WeirdCatLady · 08/01/2015 19:12

Amazing how making threats and apparently trying to bully people into submission is okay as long as it's done by the pro-RCE group.
I don't remember hearing a statement by him condemning those who threatened to rape Jess Ennis etc.

(Obv. no threat of violence is ever a good thing, all totally abhorrent)

RandomNPC · 08/01/2015 19:17

Is that what he said, Blistory?
Just when I thought he couldn't become more of a slimy twat.

YonicSleighdriver · 08/01/2015 19:18

Just coming on to say that, WCL - he'd've done himself some favours if he'd said "no threats in my name please" back then.

YonicSleighdriver · 08/01/2015 19:18

Way to shoot his apology in the foot!

WeirdCatLady · 08/01/2015 19:20

Dh was listening to talk sport earlier and they were discussing the rapist and I was pleased to hear Darren Gough saying that this apology was way too late and should have been issued when he was first released. they aren't fooled by it any more than we are.

Blistory · 08/01/2015 19:20

If he really said that the most significant issue for him was the withdrawal of funding, I may just dig out my pitchfork.

The most significant issue was that you raped a woman, denied it, allowed her to be hounded and thought you had every right to kick a ball around for a lot of money. Another significant issue, you dick, is that you remain a danger to women.

Andrewofgg · 08/01/2015 19:24

WeirdCatLady This apology for an apology would not have been worth much if it had been read by his solicitor on the steps of the court the day he was sentenced. By now it is worth less than jack-shit.
