to think the decision made by Oldham Athletic today is the proof that professional football in this country lacks any moral integrity whatsoever?

www.independent.co.uk/sport/football/transfers/ched-evans-to-oldham-athletic-family-will-pay-up-to-pave-the-way-for-deal-with-league-one-club-9961432.html

  1. Morally, what they are doing is disgusting. They are completely disrespecting women sexually assaulted and raped by men in giving this man a job where he will be a role- model, hero-worshipped and idolised by thousands of people; young men and boys in particular. The message here is the crime of rape is easily dismissed by a short spell in prison and then you can go back and do whatever you like. In many jobs where a person has committed a sexual assault or rape, they are not ever allowed to work in a position again where they have contact with young or vulnerable people. Why is Ched Evans different?
  2. His fiance must feel humiliated. He has not denied his behaviour at all- his denial is that it constituted rape. He has disrespected and humiliated her by tomming around with other women, doing deals with his friends to pick up vulnerable women, share them for sex and video each other doing that. Instead of having some self respect and dumping him, she has humiliated herself further by 'standing by her man' as he disrespects his victim even more by refusing to apologise . Now her own father is humiliating her even further by bankrolling the moron so a football club will take the risk of employing him. Eh? WTF?
  3. It is beyond my comprehension that her father has no respect for his daughter and is rewarding the man who has treated her so badly, and also encouraging her in a relationsip with a man who sexually assaults or rapes women. It says a great deal about the kind of family she has grown up in - women are clearly treated like second class citizens and the possessions of men. I think she is stupid but feel very sorry for her.
  4. Will he be accepted at other football grounds as a player? I expect so- none of them would have the guts to say he is unacceptable to them and take the consequences of standing up for what is right.
  5. Will he be cheered at Oldham? I expect so- few fans will be prepared to make a stand against the club. The culture of football in England is such that moral standards are low in the professional game.

It will all end in tears- I have no doubt.

I do hope Oldham will come to understand how appalling their actions are.

I think today is the day I am fully convinced that professional football has no moral integrity whatsoever.

Gosh! This is the first time I have ever posted a link to FB!
Shameless copy from the other thread.

Oldham have knowingly put a sex offender on their squad. They are happy to be represented by a sex offender and convicted rapist, a criminal who is still serving his sentence. WTF!

As well as a no-no list of firms who continue to sponsor, is there a yes-yes list of those who have said they will terminate deals rather than be associated with a rapist and the extraordinary eponymous website?

I prefer to give my business (such as it is) to firms whose ethics I agree with.

He really is an astoundingly unintelligent man, completely devoid of morals, lacking in self awareness and completely clueless about the emotional damage about to be done to him.

Why on earth are his supporters not protecting him ? Instead they seem to be encouraging him to take a stance that is going to rain hell down on him and make him public enemy no 1.

The reality is that he would have been forgiven his crime and could have earned back his place in society but all he's done is demonstrate that if he believes he is entitled to something, he will simply take it. And sadly, there are enough people with the same views that they will facilitate that.

So what responsibility will Oldham Athletic take when Ched Evans suffers emotional or physical damage ? Or will that simply be the fault of the mob again ?

iseenodust · 07/01/2015 21:08

Darn it, I'm always in Sports Direct for DS. Mr Ashley had better make a commercially sound decision & statement not an arrogant prat one.

AWholeLottaNosy · 07/01/2015 21:11

Stop shopping at Sports Direct! Hot them where it hurts...

AnyFucker · 07/01/2015 21:13

I certainly will not ever buy from Sports Direct while they continue to support this decision. On the other hand, I'm thinking of a special family trip to Nando's, which has announced that it is withdrawing sponsorship.

AnyFucker · 07/01/2015 21:28

MrsD...write to Mr Massey and ask him to offset your loss for you

I am sure he will agree to make sure no one is out of pocket so his future son in law can kick a football around a pitch.

LouiseBrooks · 07/01/2015 21:36

YANBU but it has been obvious for quite a long time that many people associated with football have no moral integrity whatsoever.

Mrs Devere i think that pundits name is Eric Hall. i remember him being on tv in the 80s he hasnt changed.

Disgusted with the way he talked over Charlie Webster on Channel 4 news last night.

timtam23 · 07/01/2015 22:36

Eric Hall is a caricature of every football agent that ever was. He came out with all the cliches last night on Ch 4 News "the lad should be allowed to ply his trade" "he's served his time" "why should he apologise when he says he didn't do it" etc etc

On a brighter note - delighted to hear that Nandos have joined the list of non-sponsors

I bought most of my own sports kit from SD Blush, and DS1's football boots/socks are from SD, but will be avoiding it from now on.

aufweidersehenpet · 07/01/2015 23:30

Can we start a boycott of SportsDirect?

helenenemo · 07/01/2015 23:54

I agree with the sentiment but it's beyond ridiculous to blame all professional football.

lurkernowposter · 08/01/2015 00:00

www.theguardian.com/football/blog/2015/jan/06/ched-evans-law-marina-hyde

There are 92 teams in the professional leagues, it's estmated that between them they employ over 4000 players, to suggest that the whole of football is morally bankrupt because one of them is a convicted rapist is ludicrous.

ilovesooty · 08/01/2015 00:07

Several clubs have said they wouldn't sign Evans.

I'd like to know who the three premiership managers are who Corney says support the signing.

meditrina · 08/01/2015 00:11

PFA purports to speak for all of them.

FA sets the registration conditions.

Both have important roles in setting the standards for the 'whole of football' and if the public is finding their actions in dealing with a rapist still on licence wanting, then either a) these bodies are representing the 'whole of football' in a way that shows it's regrettable standards accurately, making the idea of moral bankruptcy fair comment, or b) they are not representative and a huge clear out is needed asap.

TheOfficialPan · 08/01/2015 00:14

no, the whole sport isn't morally degenerate - at the higher level, of which we read and hear about it's more questionable but swathes of men and women conduct themselves v well indeed, compared to other 'entertainment' industries.

TrueBlueYorkshire · 08/01/2015 00:41

Amazed how spiteful a lot of people on here are. How many people have actually read the history of the case, we are not talking Jack the ripper here...:

HelenaDove · 08/01/2015 00:47

What about how spiteful Cheds fans and followers have been to the girl he raped Yorkshire? Or doesnt that count!

PuffinsAreFictitious · 08/01/2015 00:48

I have read the entirey of the case, thanks. He is a morally bankrupt, unrepentant rapist git whose family and friends continue to stalk, harass and threaten his victim.
