To have quite liked Katie Hopkins

So I've obviously NC here as I don't want this to be held against me for the rest of my MN life and I'm a coward Grin

I watched her fat tv show expecting to be disgusted and hate her but... Essentially she was right. Eat less, move more! I also think she came across as someone who was beginning to have a bit more empathy for overweight people, a bit more understanding of the issues surrounding weight gain and I thought she was funny!

When she comes out with things like calling overweight people fat bastards I can see that it's clearly to get that Shock reaction. KH enjoys the reactions she gets and to be honest I can see why it amuses her. It is amusing to see people getting all wound up and angry (like the woman who went off to call the police in the show...that was some funny shit!) when they could also choose to be like KH and let it go over their heads.
KH has people being pretty vile to her on a daily basis (not denying that most of it is self inflicted) but I don't see her sobbing and running off to the police blithering on about 'hate crimes' and 'prejudice'.
It's not just her views that are attacked it's everything, her nose, her kids, her wrinkly face ect. So how are the so called victims or their defenders of KH being any different?

It seems to have become socially unacceptable to claim to like KH. The mob mentality is so violent that to voice a differnt opinion to everyone else would be to commit social suicide and open yourself up to the kind of behaviours that everyone hates KH for!

For the record, I'm a bit over weight so I would be one of those people that KH would be laughing at as I jog down the road...I couldn't care less.

sparkling that's exactly how I think of her. A character.

The fat show was the first time I've seen her being 'normal' and I quite liked her.

MadisonMontgomery · 05/01/2015 12:10

I liked her - never really paid any attention to her before, but she came across as funny & likeable on the programme. The woman who rang the police about her was bonkers tho!

SirChenjin · 05/01/2015 12:14

It's a shame that you don't care what she says/does - because by people not caring enough to say "stop" she's being given a platform to continue.

I disagree that she's a character. She does not use humour to shock in the same way Keith Lemon/Frankie Boyle/etc do - her persona is who she is, which is an attention seeking media whore who will say and do anything to get a few column inches. Unfortunately, there are people who lap this sort of thing up and snigger behind their hands at her 'honesty', but she's simply a woman with an offensive tongue. Nothing more.

Tinkerball · 05/01/2015 12:18

Her tweet was deeply offensive to Pauline Cafferkey who is currently fighting for her life and deeply upsetting for anyone who knows her to hear her described as an "Ebola bomb". Easy to say ignore it but the media feed into her. This is a real person we are talking about who might die because she wanted to help others!! As for the anti Scottish comments I'm not surprised but it's hurtful - to class an entire nation as "sweaty"??

IThinkUStink · 05/01/2015 12:18

Equally if people just stop reacting to her then there won't be any platform for her to perform on.

Madison I agree.

OP posts:
Tinkerball · 05/01/2015 12:19

And SirC had it spot on.

IThinkUStink · 05/01/2015 12:22

I wasn't talking about the Scottish tweets. I was referring to how she came across on her show.

I agree that the tweets were deeply offensive and I think the sole purpose of them was to get these reactions. Job done

OP posts:
SirChenjin · 05/01/2015 12:23

I react to her on MN threads - I don't watch her programmes as you do OP.

Who do you think has given her more of a platform? (Clue - it's not me)

SirChenjin · 05/01/2015 12:25

I think the sole purpose of them was to get these reactions

Now why would anyone of sound mind want to get 'these reactions' to the news that a nurse is critically ill in hospital? Hmm

Sparklingbrook · 05/01/2015 12:26

I was referring to the show as well, but you can't just do that apparently. Confused However I just ignore anything she says as a soundbite and I am not on Twitter so she's easily avoided.

spiderlight · 05/01/2015 12:26
Father Jack has it spot on.
IThinkUStink · 05/01/2015 12:28

But SirChenjin it's not me who has her knickers in such a twist over her.

And the reason she wants those reactions is because, as people have said, she's a media whore. I don't disagree with that whatsoever. It doesn't mean that she didn't come across as likeable and funny on her show.

SirChenjin · 05/01/2015 12:30

Well said Father Jack Grin

Fantastically well written, slightly blasphemous humour versus Katie Hopkins. The difference is stark.

Wailywailywaily · 05/01/2015 12:30

Its because people react to her nasty little comments that she is so famous. She does not offend me but I certainly dont like her. I just pay her no heed eventually she will have had her five mins.

PiperIsTerrysChoclateOrange · 05/01/2015 12:32

I don't like her and tbh that show hasn't change my mind.

She went up to 12 stone, and tbh I think with the right frame mind anybody who is that weight can loose it.

When you are talking about people who are 20+ stone and has had a life time of dieting and failing and mentally can not stop eating it becomes very difficult.

80schild · 05/01/2015 12:32

She is an extremely rude person - however, people are so intolerant nowadays of anything even slightly deviating from "normal" opinions that this is how she has managed to get where she has.

If more intelligent people were brave enough to to offer opinions and the liberally intolerant didn't fire them down with comments over appropriateness etc, there would be no place for her at all. Looking at her, I find thoughts and opinions are all quite shallow and she is evidence that you don't need to be particularly bright to be successful.

Bring back free speech is what I say.

Feminine · 05/01/2015 12:33

I find her quite repetitive. I think her accent fools some people in to thinking she has intelligence...

SirChenjin · 05/01/2015 12:34

I think it's quite appropriate to 'get her knickers in such a twist' over the bile that KH comes out with actually.

It's interesting that you can put all the massively offensive stuff she has come out with to one side, claiming that she's likeable and funny on the show. She's neither of those things actually - and by watching her show you (and the rest of the viewers) have given her and the production companies the OK to continue with everything else she spouts, because 'there is a market for her'

Feminine · 05/01/2015 12:35

And really, it is very easy to be nasty. I know l would have no difficulty coming across like her, if l wanted attention.
They wouldn't be my true opinions/thoughts... But it is a piece of cake to insult if you have just a small amount of wit about you.

26Point2Miles · 05/01/2015 12:37

There was another thread about this, I found it interesting that a poster picked up on her epilepsy possibly having caused some brain damage ( KH) as her personality matches those who have had the type of brain damage epilepsy can cause

She did come across as a bit likeable on this show. With some empathy too. Lots of people suddenly tweeted 'always hated KH now I love her' bit extreme I thought.

Sparklingbrook · 05/01/2015 12:37

i just can't bring myself to get all het up over her. It seems to alternates between whatever Russell Brand, her and Jeremy Clarkson have said that everyone is up in arms about. I haven't got the energy.

I agree. I feel for her kids having such a panto villain for a mother. It's bound to have some effect on their lives in terms of judgement from other parents etc.

I can only imagine the staff room chat of the school her kids attend.

WannaBe · 05/01/2015 12:54

the only reason she gets this much airtime is because people respond to it. People give her a platform because they want to see what she will come out with next.

I have no time for the professionally outraged on twitter. don't like what someone has to say on twitter? don't follow them then. Every time someone retweets someone's hateful comments with a caviat that people should be offended and rt to ensure that others are offended as well you are helping to spread someone's hate speech.

If people just said nothing about kh she would have disappeared a long time ago.
