to buy waitrose Essential products but to be put off by Value, it's all in the name?

or because I trust Waitrose.
Bought some Waitrose essential washing liquid and in fact some frozen meat, which I wouldnt do with Tesco. Perhaps it is Tesco's fault with the name.
I was substituted Asda Value Chicken, and with trepidation used it it was fine but it would not be my first choice.

Thy aren't equal though, I have tried both tesco value sausages and waitrose essential and waitrose ones were like tescos normal
Sausages

Waitrose essential products look nicer than your typical value products. I can't judge on quality as I've never tried them but they LOOK smarter

Modwolvesrock · 03/01/2015 09:28

I'm the same, regularly buy essential waitrose loo roll, bleach etc.
Wouldn't buy tesco value, though.

I think it's because I consider waitrose stuff as better quality, even though it's the cheaper range Blush

Hulababy · 03/01/2015 09:32

They're not exactly the same though either.

Eg

Waitrose essential sausages are 65% pork compared to 50% in Tesco value sausages.

However I do think the name essentials is far more appealing than value.

OriginalGreenGiant · 03/01/2015 09:32

Before I discovered LIDL (and cut my shopping bill by a third) I used to buy lots of tesco value stuff. Some things were really surprising...tesco value dishwasher tabs are £1.30 and do exactly the same as Finish which are 4 times the price. The washing up liquid (about 30p) the same. Lots of food bits such as tinned tomatoes, tinned tuna - all the same.

I wouldn't buy value meat, yoghurt or bread though. The meat is full of added water and dextrose, bleughh.

WhereIsMySantaHat · 03/01/2015 09:33

Same here too. I think waitrose essential is similar to tesco/ asda own brand rather than their value band, iygwim?

R4roger · 03/01/2015 09:35

Perhaps you are right, Waitrose Essential is like other shop's own brand.

I don't use Waitrose much, (am a Lidl girl) but I use their carpark when I get my haircut and you get free parking if you spend £5! So, I have in the past bought their essential frozen green beans which were tough and stringy and their essential raisins which were full of stalks. The Lidl ones would have been cheaper than even "essential" Waitrose ones and are far superior quality IMO.

WooWooOwl · 03/01/2015 10:45

YANBU.

I happily buy Waitrose essential things (not meat) but I wouldn't buy Tesco value. It's not because of the name, although essentials does sound better than value, but because it is genuinely nicer.

ScrambledeggLDCcakeBOAK · 03/01/2015 11:20

take away the name completely and look at it differently.

The shop or packaging are not important IMO but the contents are so to know which contents/quality are worth it you need to compare them.

like someone up the thread for example sausage meat content is different between shops.

Toilet roll look at both packets you will find that one prob has more on the roll and other differences relevant to your choice.

There are things I would not buy due to the quality or quantity but the name does not enter the equation for me.

I will say though I have found quite a bit of tescos value stuff not for me (some great though) and haven't shopped in Waitrose so can't comment on that.

Gozogozo · 03/01/2015 20:18

As always, you either have to have enough time/£ to comparison shop or know what your own minimum requirements are from a product. FWIW I have found waitrose essential toilet rolls to be better than andrex, but it's only my opinion. For foods, I look for the minimum no. of ingredients and real ones as opposed to chemicals. I have been very pleasantly surprised by some products from Lidl, but if I only had time for one shop, it would be waitrose and essential all the way unless it proved to be awful. It does come down to trusting them as a default, for me.
