To not want to use a washing up bowl?

Dh and I have been together for a good few years now and he knew that I absolutely hate washing up bowls when we met.

His parents used to have one and I used to do the washing up when we visited and it was horrible. Warm, greasy water with little bits floating in it swirling around the fingers he used to say "just change the water", but I'd end up changing it constantly and it was just wasteful.

I like to wash up under running water which goes straight down the plug hole. You get to rinse the dishes and there's no horrible little bits.

I don't like the bottoms of bowls either as they seem to get greasy and it ends up as yet another thing to have to clean.

He is mentioning getting a bowl again. I do most of the washing up. We have no room for a dishwasher.

I like my washing up bowl and have a system for cleaning things. Not really dirty first,cups second,plates third,soak the pots and then done.

I am totally with you on this op. Washing up bowls drive me crazy I don't see the point of them. I always throw whatever is in them and place on the side and wash up under the tap. I've tried getting my parents to get rid of theirs, but I'm having no joy!

Wash up however you like. Hide the bowl if he buys one. Let him use it if he does the washing up.

Personally I have no issue with washing up bowls. I think leaving the tap to run is a waste of water but if you were doing my washing up I wouldn't mind at all!

YANBU. Bowls are minging. Plus they mean you can't wash anything big because it won't fit in the bowl, and it gets the way when you aren't washing up. Stupid, pointless things, especially when most sinks have an extra one next to them anyway now.

YANBU, I fvcking hate washing up bowls, they give me the creeps. I spend my whole time removing the bowl in order to actually clean things.

I think it may depend on how generally mucky the water is (I grew up in an area with such hard water chalk and occasionally tiny shrimp came out of the taps...) as to whether you think they are totally wrong or not. But they always seem kind of greasy and smelly and awful and just why why why.

hiddenhome, you're just like me. I've always hated the things; greasy bottom (the bowl, not me) has to be cleaned after use every time, turned on edge to dry off. I've always used the bare sink. But now we've had a dishwasher for about 8 months, we only use the sink for a quick rinse. I don't like those 'sink tidies' either. My sink is bare and easy to keep clean. YANBU!

Sounds as if he is volunteering to take over the lion's share of the washing up from now on!

I don't use any more water by running the tap than if I was using a bowl because I'd fill the bowl, wash a couple of items, feel sick, have to empty bowl out and refill

In fact, I'd end up by using more water if anything.

How do you get past all the little crumbs and 'bits' and grease touching your skin? Yuck!

Do you need to wear washing up gloves?

Do you look at the dishes afterwards and think "you're not really clean are you?"

What do you do with the fairy or other brand liquid?

I use the sink, run hot water in with fairy and wash glasses and cups while it is running and rinse under the running tap. Then plates/bowls. Cutlery. Pans. Anything can be rinsed under hot water into the little middle sink thing. But washing up under water running down the plug is very very wasteful and a bit odd

Re. Bits. Scrape the plates first!

I just fill the sink for not too dirty items and soak the rest and run the tap to wash pans/roasting trays. I hate bowls they're too small and irritate me

I put a wee squirt of liquid onto the brush then quickly clean the dishes, getting as many suds onto as many dishes as I can before they rinse away. There's quite an art to it

Washing up bowls are the work of the devil!

MIL " helps" by swilling the dishes in a bowl and stacking them neatly on the drainer, it makes me want to barf!

Washing up under a running tap is less wasteful because I'm not chucking a whole bowlful of water down the sink every few seconds. It does work out less if you were to measure it. I don't run the tap at full belt, just enough to make the combo boiler start up.

So, let him get one. He can use it when he does the dishes the freak and you can leave it in the cupboard when you do them. Easy peasy.

What is the tiny middle sink for?

Hate them. Now we have a sink and a half it is bliss.

Rinse, wash/soak, rinse. All done and no more water used than filling a bowl, refilling and then washing the bowl, the bottom always gets utterly foul [boak]

Unless you have a butler sink most sinks are too small, a washing up bowl is even smaller.

They are plastic and scratch and become slimy and germy yuk Its just an extra thing to wash up.

How will I manage if he gets one?

Can I store it outside in the shed with the bags of cat litter?

I dont use a washing up bowl, just fill the sink and wash. Dont understand why we need a bowl inside a sink.

I make sure there is nothing on a plate that can cause bits to float. I hate bits too.

I only fill the sink a tiny bit and then it gets full by the time Ive done the plates and cuttlery after the rinsing.

The underneath is indeed utterly foul.

Can you imagine if it was swabbed and cultured? They'd discover all kinds of new bacteria and moulds I would like to bet.
